About the area

Akumal is an old and beautiful fishing village located about an hour drive south of Cancun airport. It is well known for its beaches, bays and cenotes (fresh water outlets or swimming holes). The Meso American reef system comes to the shore here and many turtle breeds lay their eggs on its white sand beaches. Snorkeling and diving is very popular. The house is located on the south side of South Akumal bay which has a white sand beach fringed by coconut trees and a wide reef. There is a small strip of beach in front of the house next to the water, but the main beach at South Akumal is 100 yards to the north along a sandy track by the water. It is a beautiful, quiet, secluded and usually deserted. The large beautiful reef is ideal for snorkeling and kayaking. The much busier Akumal beach can be overcrowded and its reef overused. The water is very close to our house. Just outside our property is a sandy strip then flat rocks which are easy to walk across. You step off these onto a shallow sandy bottom. This entrance point to the bay is the closest and best access to the unspoiled reef at South Akumal. It is about 50 yards from this point via a sandy shallow lagoon (2 feet) and protected part of the bay which is also a good area for learners / children. Note that people need to wear booties / foot protection in the Riviera Maya sea due to the proximity of the reefs. So negotiating flat rocks is easy. We also launch our kayaks from here. We have some snorkeling gear including booties. To the north, Akumal beach center is a fairly long (20 minutes) but pleasant walk via the seaside past Jade Beach (434 minute drive). About 500 yards to our south is Aventuras Akumal another wonderful beach which is followed by another 2 half moon secluded beaches within walking distance. The Akumal village is about 3 minutes by car (Playa Del Carmen 20 minutes, Tulum 15 minutes).

“Lovely home”

Reviewed 30 Jan 2017

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Casa Kukulcan with a group of 9 friends. The house is conveniently located just off highway 307, a little over an hour drive south from Cancun international airport in Akumal. When we arrived, we were greeted in the driveway by Carlos I, who provided our group with a full tour of the house and all of the amenities provided. The inside of the house was beautiful; with high ceilings and large doors and windows providing plenty of air flow and natural cooling off the Caribbean. The bedrooms on the main and second level of the house were clean and spacious, the second floor balcony provided beautiful views of the sea, though the master bedroom was the real crown jewel of the house. The bedrooms downstairs were smaller, and are not directly accessible from the main house, so if you are travelling with a group, make sure you get there early! The kitchen was stocked with cups, plates, silverware, appliances, filtered water, etc., all of the basics we needed for our stay, with plenty of space in the cupboards for food/beverages. The house even had a dishwasher and washer/dryer that we used a few times during our stay. As nice as the house was, we spent most of our time relaxing in the pool area during our stay. We visited in January, and the wind off the Caribbean was strong for the first two or three days of our trip, but calmed down towards the end of our trip. There were plenty of chairs to lay out in the sun, and a bar and dining table we used each day. The outdoor pool was cool and refreshing, though we were a little disappointed that the hot tub wasn't working when we were there. The pool was quite cold, not something we could hang out in, as we hoped. The staff at Casa Kukulcan were amazing and extremely accommodating. Carlos helped put us in touch with local guides who took us see the dos ojos cenote on our second day. He also helped us arrange an authentic dinner at the house prepared by a local cook and her family, which I highly recommend! Enrique, who provided security on the property, was friendly and made us feel safe during our stay. And Carlos II kept the property maintained, helped us access the kayaks, snorkel gear, coal for the BBQ, etc, and even cut open fresh coconuts for us. Note: you are about 10min drive from Akumal and 18min drive to Tulum. I would highly recommend Casa Kukuclan if you are planning a trip to the Mayan Riviera.

Owner's reply: Hi Sally, Thanks very much for a very detailed and very nice review. I am very happy that you and your guests had a very good time. I am not sure what happened with the pool Jacuzzi and I am following up. Please let me know if we can be of service to you in the future.  Best Mike

A Great Spot in Akumal - May, 2, 2016

My party of 9 adults enjoyed a week at this casa and the place exceeded our expectations. The home was easy to get to and the town of Akumal was less than a 5 minute drive when provisions were needed. The staff was accommodating. The casa is well appointed and stocked to provide everything a family or large party could need for an enjoyable vacation. We cooked several nights and the large kitchen accommodated many cooks in the kitchen. We BBQed a few times out by the pool overlooking the ocean which is always a treat and we also used the chef service that was arranged by the local staff and were pleased with the food, communication, and convenience. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all comfortable and clean. The view from the decks are amazing and one can kill a day or three without ever leaving the property. The walk to Akumal for snorkeling, lunch, or drinks is about 30 minutes and a nice beach walk. We felt very safe during our stay as the night security guard introduced himself on the first day. I would highly recommend this property to a large group or a few families looking for a casa in the Akumal area. I have stayed in many a vacation home and this one ranks up towards the top. The kitchen was the best stocked I have had the pleasure of cooking in while abroad. A great time was had by our party.

A relaxing week by the sea - March 19, 2016

Our family of 8, from ages 17-75, stayed at the casa for one amazing week. As a matter of fact, we are still here (leaving tomorrow). We have vacationed in the area for 20 years. We have done the all inclusive options but decided we wanted a comfortable, laid back option for our growing family, so we could all stay together. This property is at the top of our list. Mike was quick to respond to our emails prior to the trip and very easy to work with. The staff at the property is hard working and friendly...we can't say enough about how comfortable they made our family. The property manager was easy to reach and stopped by from time to time to make sure we were happy. The home is gorgeous and close to activities and restaurants, so when we wanted activity, it was easy to find! Mostly, we enjoyed the pool, walking the beach all the way to Akumal, kayaking and snorkeling right by the casa, the sound of the surf, and the most comfortable bed I've ever had in Mexico. We can't wait to return! Thanks Mike, for sharing your home with us.

Beautiful, private house, great location - March 10, 2016

What a fabulous place! We so enjoyed our stay for 8 days with 9 people. Your staff was wonderful and took great care of us. The house is perfect for a group of our size. There is plenty of space to socialize together, relax in isolation or talk in small groups. The rooftop was our groups favorite meeting spot for a cocktail just before sunset. The large tables (both in and outside) easily accommodated everyone for meals and games. The house is in a great location – we alternately walked or took a quick drive into Akumal village for a meal or activity. It's was a short walk to a beach and wonderful snorkeling. Tulum’s grocery stores were convenient.
The information we received from the owner, prior to arrival was very thorough.
Wonderful house and a great location for a vacation. I’d recommend it to anyone. We'll be back!

Ideal Vacation Spot! - February 24, 2016

I stayed at Casa Kukulcan for 7 days with 12 adults and we had a fantastic experience. The house is stunning and the location is fabulous. There was more than enough room for all of us and we truly took advantage of what the house had to offer. Snorkeling in front of the house was a treat as was lounging in the pool. Each of the master bedrooms have great bathroom amenities. The showers were a perfect place to relax after a beach day. We cooked most of our meals and the grill/kitchen made it a pleasure to do so. What makes Casa Kukulcan truly special is the staff. They were incredibly helpful, kind and made us all feel right at home. If we had any questions, they always had the answers. The maid was sweet and thorough, leaving the house immaculately clean. I would definitely stay at Casa Kukulcan again. Make sure to take advantage of watching the sunrise and sunsets on the roof deck!

Exceptional!!! - January 5th, 2016

This place definitely gets 5 stars from us. The design of the house was incredible and it is very clear that it was done so with intentions. The setting is amazing and the staff that took care of the premises were exceptional. We would return here without question.

Great House, Great Location, Great Vacation - December 26, 2015

I absolutely give the house and staff five stars. The owner, Mike, was easy to work with and answered all my questions. He also provided an amazing amount of documents via email about the house, the location, activities, where to shop and so much more. The house is located in a small group of houses but it is secluded and quiet. It is a beautiful house with four large bedrooms and each bedroom has a full bath and separate AC units. Very comfortable sleeping. A really fun plus is the roof access with a full 360-degree view of the entire area. Stunning views of the waves hitting the reef and rolling into the protected bay and the low jungle to the west and sunsets. A great place to relax at anytime of the day. With no light pollution, stargazing was a real treat. The kitchen was well equipped with more than enough bowls, dishes, glasses, pots, pans, etc. for cooking any meal. Carlos, the local house manager, was available by phone and email before we arrived and worked with us to arrange details for dinner, activities and even New Years Eve. In addition, he was very patient with us as we made changes with our arrangements and waiting for us as we arrived late. The Maintenance person and grounds keeper, who was also named Carlos, was onsite every morning and made sure we had access to everything including the snorkel gear and kayaks. We had a great time kayaking in the water right off the beach from the house and though the beach at the house is not swimmable due to the rocks (beautiful and natural tide pools) access to the swimmable beach was a short two-minute walk to the north. During our stay we had housekeeping most days (on our schedule) provided by the charming Maria. She was very thorough and accommodating to some of our late sleeping habits. I also want to note that every evening, Lucio arrived and throughout the night patrolled the grounds and the beach to provide security to the property. Throughout our vacation, we never felt uncomfortable or at risk anytime or anywhere in the area. Lucio even helped us unload our luggage when we arrived. One of the real treats was to arrange for the chef recommended by Carlos to come in and prepare dinner. The food was excellent and when compared to a dinner out with eight people, cheaper and more convenient I highly recommend Casa Kukulcan.

Great Thanksgiving hideaway - November 2015

We took a large group to Casa Kukulcan for Thanksgiving. The house was as advertised: big, beautiful and well appointed.
The owner and staff were a joy to deal with and reacted quickly to our requests and changing conditions.
Great location between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. The weather was perfect and everyone has a good time.
We'll be back.

Summer Stay - July 2015

Great home, just as pictured. Very secluded and quaint. The house staff was wonderful, very helpful, very kind and polite. The area was safe, and the provided security staff was very beneficial for questions during the day/night. The pool was always flawless, the weather was great and the air conditioning in the rooms was AMAZING. The Kitchen made family dinners great, and the provided charcoal grill allowed for grilling on the pool deck. It was all around a great family vacation. Can't speak highly enough about the house staff, Carlos, Carlos Jr, Maria, and Lucio were wonderful to have around during the week. Thanks Mike and Staff!

Great vacation - July 2015

We were a family of 14 celebrating a big birthday. Casa Kukulcan was everything we hoped it would be and more. We ran into a slight inconvenience which Carlos, Maria, and Carlos handled professionally and promptly. The property is magnificent. We all loved every minute of our stay at this magnificent villa. Mike McGetrick is a delight to deal with.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Spring break, with Our family and friends in paradise! - March 2015

Wow! That was the all we could say as Carlos the local manager of casa Kukulcan toured us through our beautiful home for the week! I promise a week was not enough! We decided to take our 3 college age kids and three of their friends to Mexico! We had heard Cancun is a little crazy so we went out on a limb and decided to try a rental home! We couldn't be happier! Mike did a fantastic job with pictures and video and advertising for his beautiful home! But, pictures can't do justice to the beauty of the house, its setting and amenities! At any given time of the day we would find two people in the rooftop hammocks, two in kayaking, two in lounge chairs sipping coconut water out of coconuts cut from the tree, delivered by the charming and gracious Gardner Eduardo. We appreciated daily housekeeping! They even did laundry, our college kids went back to school with some clean cloths (that never happens).
I do recommend a rental car or two, in our case. We went to Mayan ruins, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, snorkeling with turtles and rays. The casa is away from the major sites and chaos, which is part of its beauty! Being away! We played hard! But couldn't wait to get home to our casa to relax!
We cooked our own breakfast and lunch, ate a few dinners out but our favorite meals were when our cook/chef Moses came and fixed our dinners! And some fancy drinks! We topped off our amazing week by renewing our vows for our 25th anniversary, poolside, overlooking the ocean with our children! Does vacation get any better than that? We say can't wait to go back! It was EPIC! Gracias Mike and your fantastic staff!

Perfect for family reunion - March 2015

The owner and house manager for Casa Kukulcan were extremely helpful in planning our trip. They both corresponded with us via email months in advance of our trip to help us find a local chef service and select a menu that was perfect for our group. Mealtime in the outdoor dining area was a big highlight of our trip. The house has amazing ocean views from every room, and with 4 large suites every couple had access to their own private bathroom and comfortable sleeping arrangements. The pool was the perfect size for the elementary-aged children in our family plus there was an extension for adult lap swimming. It was a short drive to Akumal where sea turtles were easy to spot and to Tulum to see the ruins. All of the grounds were beautifully maintained. We would recommend this home to anyone looking for a great vacation spot for several families.

What an amazing property, location, and staff...best all around trip we've ever had!
July 2014

We highly recommend a stay in Akumal at Casa Kukulcan under the ownership of Mike McGetrick… one of the best vacations we’ve ever had! Mike’s design of Casa Kukulcan teases out Mayan architecture into a contemporary building including a pyramid front and an entry reflective of a Mayan purification tunnel. ‘Purified’ is how you feel as you walk in the entry that produces a gorgeous home of tile floors, dark wood accents, and a full two-story glass visual out the back at the lap pool and ocean beyond, framed in by palm trees. Our extended family of 12 ranged from 8 to 81 and the house easily accommodated needs for all. The large kitchen and professional surfaces allowed for food prep plus hanging out space and the two dining table options easily sat us all. Large air conditioned bedrooms with individual temperature controls, and comfortable beds and pillows, provided your choice of sleeping arrangements. My wife and I chose to sleep in the master suite with all doors and windows open to allow the warm breezes to pass over us. We fell asleep listening to the surf (bugs not a problem) and awoke to the songs of the melodious blackbird and kiskadee. The sunrise was also available from our master suite bed or from the chairs on the veranda …with a full cup of a Mexican mocha in hand, it was indeed perfection! Casa Kukulcan offers so much that if we did nothing else during our stay, we could fully enjoy the property, swim in the pool, or snorkel in the ocean beyond. We did that a number of days including our first full day so we could rest from travel and fully absorb our luxurious spot. We drove a few mornings into Akumal beach (just around the back of the Akumal Dive Shop at 8am) to snorkel with an assortment of sea turtles and stingrays as they grazed on the sea grass. We visited Mayan ruins as well, but a highlight of our stay was a private tour by the owner of the Santa Cruz Cenote. Carlos was very helpful and made the arrangements, but I would advise making them well in advance. The owner knows his cave and cenote well, speaks great English, and is clear about his desire to protect it while also sharing this remarkable little piece of earth with others. Thank you Mike and staff for providing the back-drop to a magical vacation! The Vickland and Wilson Families

Beautiful, romantic beachfront home - June 2014

My husband and I enjoyed a perfect honeymoon in a perfect vacation spot thanks to Mike (the owner). The house and grounds of Casa Kulkulcan are absolutely beautiful and definitely the picture of paradise. It is spacious, well-maintained, and staffed by excellent people. Our gardener Eduardo was friendly and very helpful. He was there to assist in retrieving any necessary equipment for our trip. He even went above and beyond to help us get a private snorkeling tour of Akumal beach, where we got to see sea turtles, sting rays, and other beautiful parts of the local sea life. The maid Elizabeth and property manager Carlos were also friendly and eager to assist us with anything we might need. Mike was excellent in helping us to prepare and enjoy our vacation as much as possible and Casa Kulkulcan was everything we imagined it would be and more. We highly recommend it to any prospective vacationers!

Gorgeous house in beautiful Akumal - January 2014

From the moment we decided to book this house, the owner was incredibly helpful and resourceful, providing us with an abundance of information not only relating to the house but to the area and activities we could enjoy throughout our stay. Through several emails and calls he ensured we felt comfortable with where we were staying and fully prepared for the week ahead. The house really is as beautiful (if not more so) as the pictures show and the location is ideal - far enough removed to not be inundated with people/tourists but close enough to still easily access the areas of activity. One of our favorite activities was practically outside our doorstep, which was swimming with the turtles and stingrays in Akumal Beach. Theresa and Jorge were beyond helpful and pleasant to be around! Theresa even helped us to find a chef to cook for us two nights which ended up being the best meals of our trip. I highly recommend staying here - the place is great and you will be in the best of hands.

Christmas at Akumal - December 2013 / January 2014

We were two families with older children ( youngest was 17 years), a party of nine people in total, staying here for a week long Christmas vacation in 2013.We had a fantastic time and the property deserves 5 stars. The house is in a beautiful location and very well furnished. We had a few minor inconveniences during our stay which we addressed with the owner / property manager but nothing which in any way detracted from our overall enjoyment of the property. The owner made the rental arrangements very efficiently and he did everything possible to be helpful. The staff at the property, Jorge and Teresita, who looked after the grounds / pool and did house cleaning during our stay were very helpful and friendly. The property manager, Angel was always available to assist with any issue and introduced us to the house very thoroughly. This house is as beautiful in reality as the pictures portray and the location is wonderfully convenient yet very quiet and secure. There is lots to do nearby and we enjoyed the tourist sites such as the ruins of Tulum, ATV trail rides, fishing trips, exploring underground cenotes, lots of beach activities and wonderful snorkeling. For dining we found great restaurants from small and cheap taco stands in Akumal to upscale restaurants in Tulum. I would strongly recommend you rent a car to enable you to fully enjoy this beautiful part of Mexico and its delightful 'winter' climate.
