Area Information
Close to Valencia and the beaches of Gandia, this lovely house offers a terrific location to explore the local region and enjoy a more traditional side of Spain. We give a you an introduction to the history of the village and local area.

The village of El Palomar, with around 600 inhabitants was founded in the decade of the s, after the depopulation by James I of the Arabic farmsteads of Gayáran, al-Fadádín, Junda and Quwwád al-Askar, and thus it was consolidated here, next to a big dovecote, the Christian farmstead of El Palomar (that took its name from the Romanic toponym al-Plumbár).

Although the economic activity of the current people in Palomar is basically industrial, the village depended in past centuries on farming (olive trees, wheat, vegetables and livestock), and the resources from the mountains (wood, firewood, ice trade and charcoal).

You are invited to walk around the village, making a journey into the past and visiting the local museum collections located in the medieval building of the ancient Town Hall. Wander the streets and squares to view Mediterranean architecture, admire the religious heritage and the devotion of the people in Palomar to the parish building of St Peter Apostle (17th century). Explore and discover the natural area surrounding the Fountain of Sis, the ravine of Junda or the local hermitage. Or simply enjoy the quality of local life in the rural area and the bars and restaurants of the village like La Font de Sis and Bar Mediterranean.

To explore and discover the rural heritage we recommend you visit the castle of Carricola (El Palomar). It is an architectonic jewel of the local heritage and emblem of the local country. It was built by the Moors that lived in the Muslim farmsteads of the surrounding area between the 12th and the 13th century. It is a typical building of the society of the al-Andalus and it consists of a solid tower with rectangular base protected by a walled area. It as recently been restored.

The route of the local path ( 118) is easy to follow and shows interesting remains of rural architecture and ancient economic activities. This area is within the natural reserve of Benicadell with examples of lime-kilns and ice-houses with wonderful view of the Vale of Albaida.
