About the area

The Lakes Region of New Hampshire is the mid-state region surrounding Lake Winnipesaukee, Winnisquam Lake, Squam Lake, and Newfound Lake. The area comprises all of Belknap County, the southern portion of Carroll County, the eastern portion of Grafton County, and the northern portions of Strafford County and Merrimack County. The largest municipality is the city of Laconia. The area is a popular tourist destination in the summer time, with the activity peaking during the annual Motorcycle Week and races at Loudon's New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Other tourist destinations include Funspot in Weirs Beach, the children's museum of Center Harbor, Gunstock ski resort and Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion at Meadowbrook, both in Gilford, Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, and the town of Wolfeboro, which claims to be the nation's oldest resort town. Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in the state, and is home to numerous vacation homes. Several motion pictures have either been filmed or set in the region, including the 1981 classic, On Golden Pond (filmed on Squam Lake in the town of Holderness).

Perfect Family Vacation
I loved the location and the house, it was perfect for my family of ten. I was able to watch the sunrise every morning from several rooms in the house as well as the deck. The boat dock and private beach were a plus. The water was shallow enough for the small children and crystal clear. The kitchen was fully equipped and had everything we needed. We also loved the unexpected small firepit, the kids loving making smore's. Local restaurants and convenience stores are within a couple of miles. I would stay here again and definitely recommend the property to anyone.

Extraordinary House, Beautiful Weather
Can't guarantee the weather but the house was beautiful and more than adequate for 6 adults, two teens and two younger boys. Boat, kayaks and paddlebord all got well used. 11 year old also caught more than his share of fish right from the shore. Nothing is perfect but this was close. Ziplining, hiking, biking and Weirs Beach volleyball were also on the lengthy agenda. A liitle less of a slope to the water sould have bee n nice for this 72 year old.......BUT I did it. LOL This is a great property. I would recommend it to anyone.

Beautiful home with beautiful views.
The home at Alton Bay is beautiful. It flows well and has many areas to sit and relax. It is a very long walk down and back to the lake and even my teen grandkids were out of breath when they climbed the many stairs. The three main bedrooms were very comfortable as well as the bathrooms. The Kitchen is well equipped. People we met in the area were very friendly. Had just a few minor issues with household products that were for our use. I would recommend this property just bring your own pillows!

Enjoyed your place
We really enjoyed your stay at your beautiful home. The pictures did not do it justice! It was spacious and the lake views from nearly every room were terrific! The only disappointment for us was the lack of curtains on the upstairs bedroom windows. I understand the desire to take advantage of the views but on vacation we like the option to sleep in and were awakened early each day. If you don't want to wake up early bring a sleep mask! The access to the water was steep but easy to get to and swimming in the calm cove was perfect for kids. The kitchen was well appointed and had everything we needed. The handyman was responsive and friendly when we needed anything. A few friends came by to visit and were very impressed with the house and location. We would certainly rent this place again!

Great on Lake Winnipesaukee
The description actually does not do justice to the house. Located on the hillside overlooking a quiet inlet, separated from traffic by a wooded area, the house was great. It is well maintained, offers light, airy rooms, pleasant furniture, and lots of locations for a large family group to settle down in together or in smaller sets. Great to have a large screened in porch.

Communication with the owner and the (readily available) caretaker were easy and comfortable. The house was fully equipped with everything we needed - everything worked and instructions were available. It was clean as were the bedlinen, etc. Friendly neighbors.
Our family (ages 6 through 84 !) were all satisfied. Fun beach to sit or play on with a gentle sandy slope to deeper water, easy docking and ready access to the larger areas of the lake were ideal. Water sports were comfortable in the sheltered water if desired. Marines within easy reach.

If you want to just relax: good choice ... if you want water sports: great choice ... if you want hiking or biking a fine point-of-departure. Shops and boardwalk type activities (Weirs Beach, with a drive in theater) as well as outlet shopping (Tangers Outlet) easy to reach. Easy to find from the interstate. low-middle and higher end restaurants (and a roomy kitchen in the house) for interested parties.

I have no reservations in recommending this property to you, and recommend it highly.

As a small aside, I would note that the beach in down the hill and out of sight from the house/deck for those with small (non water safe) children. A flight of stairs and path (wide enough for a car) brings you right down the incline.
Due to the incline between the house and the lake, it might be less suitable for those with (serious) pulmonary issues or those with difficulty walking.

Family Getaway
We enjoyed our stay in this spacious cottage in the woods. It had several places where people could go to have quiet time. As we were there for a wedding most of our time was spent elsewhere however we would have enjoyed the property itself more it we had the time. The view was terrific! We would love to go back with some of our adult friends in the fall .

Wonderful vacation home
The property and home are beautiful. We stayed for a week and enjoyed our stay. The layout of the house worked well for viewing the lake from many rooms in the home. It was also a pleasure to be
in the kitchen because the layout for cooking was ideal. The beds were extremely comfortable, the only downfall was there wasn't a tv in all the bedrooms. This ended up being a plus for us because everyone seemed to gather in the living room which provided a lot of family time together. Overall rating I would rate this four stars. Looking forward to being able to book another vacation at this home.
