The cottage consists of a comfortable lounge, with sofa and additional sofa-bed, a small dining area, a galley kitchen, modern shower-room, and upstairs there is one large double bedroom, and leading off, a children's bedroom.
The lounge is equipped with a modern flat-screen TV with cable channels, a DVD player, CD player and is wifi enabled. There is a selection of DVDs, CDs and books for your use.
The kitchen has a 4-ring gas hob, a fridge freezer, kettle, coffee maker and all the pots, pans, and cooking utensils you need for your stay.
The shower-room has a loo, basin and shower.
The double bedroom has a large double bed and the children's bedroom has a bunk-bed for 2 chidren. There are a further 2 foam beds available if necessary for younger children.
My own house is just around the corner, so if you need anything during your stay, just ask and I will try to provide it.
Outside there is a table and chairs overlooking the ''Doolhof'' - or '''maze area'' which is the oldest part of this historic town. This is a traffic-free area, so it is safe for kids to play. During the daytime, tourists wander through the old streets and alley-ways, but in the evening they melt away, leaving just the locals going about their business.
Sometimes you will see a woman in local costume, on her way through the Doolhof towards the dyke, just like in the old days. We have many old photos of this street, with locals in years gone by wearing the old costume.
Volendam is half an hour by bus or car from Amsterdam, and is a great location for visiting the ''waterland'' area of north Holland including the many beautiful towns in the area, such as neighbouring Edam with its cheese market.
Volendam itself is famous for the traditional Dutch costume, which is the national costume of Holland, and also for its music scene, which began in the 50's, developed in the 60's and still forms a large part of Dutch popular music (bands and artists such as The Cats, BZN, The 3Js, Jan Smit and Nick & Simon are all from Volendam).
The dyke on Volendam, also just steps away from the cottage, has many bars, cafes, restaurants and shops for all tastes and budgets. On Saturday there is a market in the Europaplein, and very often during the summer is there a market or ''braderie'' either in town or at the nearby marina-park.
At the marina-park you can also find a swimming pool and small beaches.
