Description from owner

Songbird Cottage

Don't be charmed by the illusion of a higher price always meaning a better place to stay than Songbird. I take a personal interest in the day-to-day care of the place and am available by phone/text/email to ensure that everything is as it should be for the guests, and I deal with local contractors who are aware of my standards and with whom I have a longstanding relationship. Both units have all the comforts of home due to the fact my wife and I stay here frequently. Our goal has been repeat guests coming back again and again.. we really want you to have a pleasant stay so you want to come back.

1.The Gulf beach access is 3 blocks and no busy street to cross.

2. Located in the middle of the block on a quiet street with very little traffic.

3. House landline phone provided for free local calls and free long distance to North America and Territories. Canadians like this idea a lot.

4. Free fast wifi and Washer and Dryer at no charge. Also ironing board and iron. Hair dryer, all linens and towels. Bring your own toothbrush.

5. Provided bikes are a ladies step through style because they are easier to pedal and easier on and off. Almost all have baskets. There are 8 bikes and they are looked after by Claude's mobile bike repair.

6. New refrigerator 2016 with automatic ice maker in the freezer.

7. The BBQ is a charcoal type and I do not supply coals.

8. There is central air installed in 2012 and in January 2016 new ducts and new attic insulation.

9. A beach wagon to haul your stuff is provided. Umbrella, beach chairs, and beach toys too.

10. I supply a welcome basket with paper goods, dish sponges and garbage bags.

11. Queen mattress was replaced in December 2012 and is rotated faithfully. Never heard a complaint about this one. The twin mattresses are standard type. No complaints from guests. Hideabed sofa. Maximum 5 people.

12. The closest restaurant, Beach Bistro, is 4 blocks and fine dining.

13. 7 blocks to Island Shopping Center [think 1960] with restaurants, clothing stores, hardware store, art gallery and more.

14. Holmes Beach public library is 5 blocks away. Sweet library!

15. In the place there is a 3 ring binder of things to do and places to go.

16. No stairs here as it is an easy living ground level place.

17. TV is a new Feb 2017 43" HD flat thin screen hooked up to cable with 100's of channels, extra channels: Discovery, Disney, Life, some NFL to name a few.

18. 2 bedrooms and 1 Bathtub with shower with 2 grab bars.

19. No pets and no smoking. A number of people verify no pets as they have allergies and yes no pets.

20. The cleaner has been cleaning for over 2 years and does nice work. Lives off island just a bit.

21.The patio is not covered and has a table with chairs with new cushions and is covered when not in use..

22. Outdoor shower when home from the beach.

23. The kitchen is fully stocked with cooking utensils and almost always salt, pepper, sugar, flour, and many other spices.

24. A free trolley has a stop 1 block away to go north and a stop to go south is at the beach access. 6am-10pm

25. Parking space for two cars.

26. Backyard is a nice size.

Is it perfect? No way! But it is clean, tidy, well groomed and it just works. This year the winter guest is coming back for the 7th year in a row in 2017. Germans for 3 weeks for the 7th year. My goal has been to never advertise again because all guests are repeats. Making progress but not there yet. So, please, ask me questions as you decide on a place to vacation. Thanks for your time!

Other guests have said to tell you that there is space between the houses and big trees too. The neighbor just to the west has a tropical front yard that is lovely. Our front yard by comparison is plain but neat and groomed. The backyard has a Kent mango tree that bears in July and is babied by our island friend, Gene, (he planted it and loves the mangoes it bears).

About the area

If you are looking for old Florida then come here for fun in the sun with no high rises and a laid back feel. Imagine Florida 30 years ago and that is how Anna Maria Island is today. Powder soft beaches, exquisite sunsets, superb fishing and it is a bird sanctuary too. Plenty to do; swimming, kayaking, dolphin cruises, sport fishing, golf, shopping or relaxing with a good book. WHERE WE ARE: Gulf Coast near Bradenton - Fly into Tampa and drive [over 40 minutes and under an hour] over to Anna Maria Island on the Gulf of Mexico or fly into Sarasota and it is 20 minutes to Anna Maria Island. This 7 mile island is north of Sarasota and south of Tampa. The Beach is 3 blocks. Walk 7 blocks south to a shopping center (think 1960 one level). Or ride a bike everywhere. We sometimes do not rent a car when we visit. We ride the tandem bike to get groceries, go to the beach, go to restaurants. Walk to a very nice restaurant Beach Bistro at 4 blocks. Restaurants within 7 blocks are The Feast, Eat Here, Hurricane Hanks, Minnies for breakfast, Coffee Haus.

Getting around

It is possible to put a bike on the trolley. Have done it from time to time. Trolley stop to go north is a one block walk. To go south it is at the beach entrance 3 blocks. There are services to pick you up at the airport and take you back.

Interaction with guest

I will send you access information one week before you arrive. And if you want I can provide you things to do for one week. You will need to tell me your likes and dislikes just a little bit before I put it together. I will come with links to the places I mention so you can read up.

Owner's reply: Thank you, Cathy, for your kind words and glad you had a good time! I have been blessed by visitors from Scotland.

“Fantastic just like last year!”

Perfect place to stay! So much so we have already started making arrangements to come back next year making it our 3rd consecutive... The house is completely stocked with towels, toiletries, appliances, bikes, and beach accessories - feels like you're walking into your own home. Do yourself a favor and see for yourself!

“Heavenly haven on the island!”

Reviewed 13 Jul 2016

I have been coming to the songbird on Anna Maria Island for about 4 years now. And every stay is wonderful. A lovely cottage with all the amenities of home. The decor is nice and beachy and the beach itself is just a short walk or you can ride in style on one of the many bikes that are provided. The mango trees in the backyard are just another reminder that your on island time! There's always plenty of things for us to do on the island and if I want to stay in and relax, there is WiFi here for the kids to keep them busy on their devices. The songbird is the place to stay for a perfect island getaway! And that is why I keep coming back!

Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind words!

We stayed at Tropical Song for a month in September and we loved it. It is just home from home, everything is there for your use.The wifi is free which is great and we just loved the bikes. We saw more of the island on the bikes. The beach is just a short walk and what a beach! We are going back next year, well done Joel.

Owner's reply: The bikes are a lot of fun and a great way to get around! Thank you for your help with the tomato plants, Helen and Dave.

“Relaxing and Serene”

Reviewed 11 Dec 2012

We had a wonderful stay at Tropical Song. The house is comfortable and has everything you need. There are lots of little extras that are great--beach chairs, noodles, cooler, beach toys, etc. It was pretty hot when we were there, so we really appreciated the air conditioning! We also really liked the location. We visited most of the beaches on the island, but my favorite was probably the one just a short walk away. The whole island is calm and serene. I am looking forward to bringing my kids on the next trip to Tropical Song.

Owner's reply: Well, Crystal, glad you had a good time and I hope you come back. It is fun at the beach for kids! And thank you for your comments to me about a few changes. We are implementing your idea of a note on the table for new guests explaining the location of some things they might not notice straightaway. Also, we did buy a larger cutting board for Tropical Song per your suggestion. Thank you again.

“Anna Maria Island........Nice and relaxing!”

Reviewed 17 Aug 2012

I spent almost 3 weeks with my children enjoying the beaches of Anna Maria Island. We were just 2 blocks from the beach and enjoyed the easy access. The accomadations were perfect! 2 bedrooms, nice den, full kitchen,wi-fi,bbq grill, bicycles and a washer/dryer. I didn't want to leave. We will be back next year.....maybe for a full month! Is it July yet???

We had the opportunity to stay at Songbird/Tropical Song with our two children for a spring break get-away. The accommodations far exceeded our expectations, the property is well-maintained and very clean. Having looked at other rentals and actually staying on AMI another time, we are so looking forward to coming back and staying here. The rental price is a remarkable deal - we spent far more (almost double) recently on another rental and we were very disappointed. The only reason we didn't stay at Songbird/Tropical Song again was that it was completely booked during the time we could travel! Joel was very easy to work with and staying at Songbird/Tropical Song was a vacation that my family will never forget. Thank you so much for sharing your piece of paradise with us!! Can't wait to come back!

Owner's reply: We try hard to make it a good experience.

“Sunshine on an Island”

Reviewed 30 Jan 2012

We just spent 4 weeks in this cottage on a wonderful island. The weather could not have been better and we were cozy in this two bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. Washer and dryer were provided which saved a Iot of quarters. Beach chairs, towels, and umbrella made it easy to enjoy the perfect beach about 3 short blocks away. It was clean, convenient to P.O., restaurants, bank, and stores. The wireless service provided made it easy to use our IPad. Books, puzzles, CDs, DVDs, and games were available, The cable TV with good service from Brighthouse had many channels. The kitchen was well equipped. The owner is very committed to making your stay a good one and is easy to contact with any concern.

Owner's reply: We try hard to make your stay a good one. I am on a cell phone for a text or email or for a phone call if you have issues.

“Wonderful place to stay in Anna Maria”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2011

This was our first visit to Anna Maria and my wife and I could not have been more pleased with our stay at Tropical Song. As other reviewers have mentioned, it has so many amenities and is fully equipped that it feels more like a home than a rental, which made staying here so more comfortable and enjoyable. There are books, CDs, games, and beach stuff for you to use, ceiling fans throughout the home, a fully stocked kitchen, and an outdoor grill and lounge chairs. Free wifi and free long distance calls were a big plus. We also particularly liked the free bikes that are there to use - the streets in Anna Maria are quiet and level so it was easy and so much fun for us to bike all around the island. I have to also mention that Joel, the owner, is an absolute pleasure to deal with and truly wants to make sure you're enjoying your stay - two examples of this - our flight was almost cancelled due to bad weather in new york and Joel specially called us the day afterward to make sure we got down okay and were alright; on another day while we were in Anna Maria it rained for a few hours and Joel gave us a great list of indoor things to do just in case it didn't clear up (fortunately it did!). Tropical Song is a great value - and exceeded our expectations in all respects. I'm convinced you won't find as nice a place to stay for this price on Anna Maria. The next time we're back to Anna Maria we'll definitely be staying at Tropical Song. Thanks Joel!!

“Song Bird/Tropical Song”

Reviewed 22 May 2011

We stayed at "Song Bird" which is the other apartment to this 2 apartment house. It was absolutely lovely there. A very comfortable, spacious & clean place to stay. It is within walking distance to one of the most beautiful beaches on Anna Maria Island, where we enjoyed swimming in the warm, crystal clear Gulf Waters as well as walks on the white powdery sand. The house is located just off the main road so there is privacy as well as peace & quiet, along with the convenience of still being close to the many shops & points of interest of the island. Joel (the owner) was more then willing to help us with any questions or concerns we had. It was very convenient to be able to use the phone (free long distance) for checking in on things at home and we also enjoyed the wide selection of channels to choose from on the TV. The house also as a huge back yard to enjoy. With several tables & a variety of comfortable chairs for relaxing in the sun or reading a book in the shade of the big tree... it really was paradise & we are looking forward to staying there again.

Owner Supplied Testimonials

Tony & I wanted to thank you for making our stay in your rental very comfortable and enjoyable. We will write tonight a few remarks in the house book and they will be for your reading when you visit again. we have had a most restful and enjoyable 6 weeks.

We did try to leave it in the same condition as we found it and truly think that is the right way to treat folks like you who care very much about renters.

Although we have not made decisions about next year we will be seriously considering a return trip. They returned for 8 weeks starting December 2009 and here is a comment 2/24/10 Hi Joel;

Just a brief note to say thanks for making our stay in Florida so comfortable....despite the weather.

Genny & Tony

As soon as we opened the door it felt just like home again.

Hi Joel,

Thank you for sharing your wonderful place with us in Anna Maria :) The slow paced - laid back way of life there was just what I needed! In exploring the island & talking with shop owners, I can see what has drawn them there - a piece of paradise!!

I met Julie this morning, (do I have her name rt?) the one who watches over your place. She asked me if we got the bottle of wine. Did you arrange that to be in the frig for us? We saw it there & drank it. No note, so we thought the previous guests left it.
We made an extra house key, as Wayne was coming & going with his friend while Rachel & I were off exploring. We left that in the lockbox & told Julie. I asked her to water the tomato plants. Keep me posted on how they make it - as I told you - I'm known as a plant killer!!

As we go into our tundra here - I will think of the sand between my toes, warm water, sunshine & beautiful sunsets & dream of being there!!

Thanks again Joel :)

Thank you for a wonderful vacation. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but we had to go back to work as soon as we got back.

The house was very clean and comfortable. It was everything you said. We also enjoyed the patio out back. I won't say it was the best vacation I've ever had, but it was definitely one of the most restful. As much as we travel working, that's exactly what we needed.

The island was beautiful, and the beach was great. The community was quiet and friendly, especially Julie. She was great and very helpful. You have a jewel there.

I hope we left the house in satisfactory condition. Thanks again for a great stay and hope we get to come back again.
