Unspoiled by tourism, this section of the Tygart River is truly an undiscovered gem nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.

The historic community of Arden, West Virginia, is home to the Tygart River Guest House. It is off the beaten path and serves as a convenient hub with direct access to the river - yet only 6 miles from the nearest town where you can find restaurants, groceries, gas, pharmacy, hospital and more. And 4WD is not needed during the winter months as all the roads are plowed.

The Arden Grade Road was once a main route through the mountains on the B&O railway during the early 1900's and follows along the river providing spectacular views! It's also a great place for casual bike rides with access to mountain trails nearby. Wintertime is especially beautiful with traffic at a minimum offering a largely secluded area to walk and enjoy the river. It's kind of like a (mini national park.)

Take in the stars fireside, listen to the rolling sounds of whitewater, and connect with family and friends in a most welcoming and unlikely place.

The Tygart River Guest House offers a spacious "old timey" front porch, complete with rocking chair and plenty of easy lounging wicker furniture - great for lazy days on the river. High ceilings will greet you through the front entrance where original bead board walls whisper stories from the distant past and restored yellow pine floors pave the way to a more contemporary present. We have brought together period elements from the coal mining era joining them with contemporary colors and modern amenities.

The ground floor offers two bedrooms. The one directly to your left upon entering features a classic full size wrought iron bed dressed in quilts with two lamps and nightstands, armoire and river views. The room to your right boasts a sunny disposition arrayed in hues of red and green. Its companions are an ornate metal queen size bed, ceiling fan, closet and comfortable chairs. Continue down the hall into the open Dining Room which is centrally located and acts as a hub for the whole household to gather between the Living Room and Kitchen. For the musically inclined, there is upright piano dating back to the early 1900's and a large country table with pullout extensions to comfortably seat 10 people. Additional seating can be found at the breakfast bar.

The Kitchen is equipped with microwave, dishwasher, full size refrigerator, gas cook stove, antique country sink and drain board and ceiling fan/light. Glass sliding doors separate the kitchen from a spacious semi-private back deck with patio set, fire pit with camp chairs and a private backyard view.

You'll feel right at home in the Living Room with sloped ceiling and hardwood floors, leather couch, and love seat. An oak armoire entertainment center houses a TV and DVD Player. One of the most unique features of this home is the large antique oak pocket doors at your disposal to close off the Living Room if more privacy is needed. There is a convenient full bathroom just off the Living Room with a shower and re-purposed slate tile floors. On the opposite side of the house is a Laundry Room with washer and dryer, clean tile floors and laundry table. This room leads to another full bathroom with full size tiled shower.

Upstairs, there is a full bathroom with tile floors and windows on all sides giving it a bright airy feel with an antique claw foot bathtub for soothing relaxation. Exiting the bathroom, there is a bedroom on your left complete with a full size bed, roomy closets, TV and DVD player, full river-facing windows and carpeted floors. There is a gorgeous view of the river from the hallway as well, where you can perch for a look from above. Finally, we arrive at the bunk bed room to the right of the hallway. It also has a view of the river, full carpeting and two sturdy bunk beds to comfortably sleep four people. One bunk bed features a staircase to the upper bunk for easy access.

Swimming is a popular activity in the summer and there are many places to take a dip on hot summer days. Sightseeing is everywhere locally and in nearby parks. Moats Falls is located about 3 miles downstream and is absolutely breathtaking. A unique view to the 16' river wide vertical drop is easy to access on foot by crossing the natural stone bridge that leads to a house size boulder upstream of the falls. There are many sandy beaches and places to explore along the riverbanks, as well as trails to hike and mountain bike. As avid whitewater guides and kayakers who have lived in the area for more than 35 years, we can arrange for whitewater rafting trips, private kayak clinics, point you in the direction of nearby hiking and mountain biking trails and/or guide you to some prime fishing spots.

Guest Access

The entire house is yours to enjoy! Cell phone service is spotty however there is guest access to wifi. The network connection is unsecured and via satellite so speeds are a little slow. There is also Dish TV in two rooms of the house. The house features a small front yard and behind the house there is a dry creek bed with semi-private backyard, firepit, and spacious deck. Great for group gatherings! (It's more privacy than most beach houses.)

Other Things to Note

Parking is available in the driveway which can accommodate 3-4 cars depending on size. Area Information
The Neighborhood

We originally moved to West Virginia for the whitewater 25 years ago - and we're still here. There's something wonderfully magnetizing about the close-knit community of Arden and the Tygart River. Make no mistake, our front porch is neither a place of anonymity, nor of complete privacy but rather a place to welcome each other, to share the view and recall a time when casually waving to a stranger was an act of hospitality both given and received. Yet, you have the best of both worlds. The back deck is much more of a quiet sanctuary mostly hidden from direct view. So, if you're looking for complete seclusion, this is not the place for you. But if you're up for a local experience filled with beautiful scenery and backyard campfires or down by the river...this spot can't be beat!

Close by is Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, WV where many sporting events are held as well as other activities. And there are many historic sites like Adaland Mansion, the Philippi Covered Bridge & Carrolton Covered Bridge along with civil war era reenactments during certain times of the year. Oh and we can't forget the festivals...Blue & Gray Festival, Philippi, Augusta Heritage Festival in Elkins, Buckwheat Festival in Kingwood, Strawberry Festival in Buckhannon, Cheat River Festival in Albright, Italian Heritage Festival, and so many more. WV Culture offers a complete list.

Philippi is the nearest town just 6 miles away where you can find gas, groceries, restaurants, hospital, pharmacy, shopping and more. Bridgeport offers a wider selection of all the above with airport service, about 40 min away.

Tygart Lake State Park. This nearby park offers all types of lake recreation. Rent a pontoon for the day or jump on a jet ski.

Audra State Park. The Middle Fork River flows though tight channels and larger boulders. Amazing kayaking, fishing, hiking and swimming are all available at this park and the views are amazing!

Blackwater Falls State Park. This popular attraction is about an hour from the Guest House featuring a stunning waterfall dropping 65 feet! This area is also home to some of the best Mountain Biking in the state of West Virginia. Stop in the local bike shop, Blackwater Bikes to find out about the trails and plan to spend hours riding on trails ranging from beginner to expert. The Allegheny Trail offers a rail trail ride that's great for riders of all types and can be accessed in Parsons.

Timberline Four Seasons Resort & Canaan Valley. If you don't mind a little drive through some very beautiful mountains into higher elevations, there is a great time to be had snow. And don't forget to stop by the Purple Fiddle for a variety of bands each weekend in Thomas on your way back. Definitely worth the trip!

The house is about 40 minutes from Clarksburg, 1 hour from Morgantown, 2 ½ hours from Pittsburgh, 2 ½ hours from Charleston and about 4 hours from Washington D.C. It's doable!
