“Nice place to relax with your dogs!”
We spent three nights at the Harp-Hawkins Cottage in late May 2016. The cottage was very comfortable, and allowed pets, so we brought our two older dogs. We found the cottage very comfortable despite some chilly weather (the two propane stoves helped). It is spacious enough for several people, with a large, carpeted downstairs living area in addition to another living area, kitchen, two small bedrooms and enclosed porch upstairs. There are also two full bathrooms, with the downstairs one being much larger. A family would have no problem finding ample space to spread out. There are TVs with cable both upstairs and downstairs, and quiet places to read as well. The porch has a view through trees to the water on the north side of Mt Desert Island, looking across to Trenton and the airport. We were there early enough in the season that leaves did not obscure the view. A set of steep wooden stairs goes down to a small rocky beach, for those so inclined. Nearby down the road is a larger public beach (pebbles, not sand) with a large parking area, for when the water is warm enough for a swim. The cottage is several miles from Bar Harbor, which is not too inconvenient. There are closer places to eat or buy food and other supplies, including a general store and an IGA (but check the hours online; they close at 3:00 pm). We did not experience much traffic driving into Bar Harbor, but then again, we were there in late May. Some of the shops, restaurants and hotels had not even opened for the season yet. I imagine that later in the summer the few miles into Bar Harbor could take you half an hour or more. The house is dog-friendly, but you have to talk with the owner first. There is a security deposit to cover any possible damage or extra cleaning needed due to pets. Our older dog also had some trouble with the hardwood floors upstairs, so you might want to think about bringing throw rugs, or spending more time downstairs, which is fully carpeted (as are the stairs). Outside there is a small lawn, as well as a long but steep gravel driveway back up to Bay View Rd, which is quiet enough to walk along even with dogs. It is less than half a mile to the aforementioned public beach. All in all we enjoyed our stay, and would recommend this cottage to others, especially if your dogs want to come along. Just make sure you clear it with the owner first, and be prepared to do some vacuuming before you leave (there are two vacuum cleaners) if you have a shedder, like we
Loved the cottage location and privacy! Beautiful views of the Bay and so convenient to Acadia National Park and the town of Bar Harbor. We will definitely be back and looking forward to it!
“AMAZING!! You will love this place!”
My husband I go to Bar Harbor every year the last week in September. This year we went for two weeks and stayed at this property because the place we have stayed at the last few years was not available. I will tell you I was NOT disappointed. This place is fantastic. The view is incredible and the house is spotless. It had everything we needed. We have a large dog and he was very happy sitting out on the deck on when we were at the house and he had plenty of room in the house as well. There is a huge loft upstairs, two bedrooms on the main floor and plenty of room downstairs. One of the perks for us this time is that you are right in Bar Harbor and very close to town. The fireplace was perfect. Though it was only two of us, this house is plenty big. I love the peace and quiet. It is beautiful at night, looking the stars and the moon light reflecting off the water. My husband and I would come home after a night out and sit in the Adirondack Chairs and have a coffee or adult beverage and just enjoyed the views! We will be back next year for sure. Thank you so much for your hospitality! I highly recommend if you need a place to stay while visiting Bar Harbor., choose one of the Harp - Harkins Properties. You will not be disappointed. HUGE PLUS - Little A's delivers to the houses, which was nice the first night we arrived. We arrived a bit too late and we were way too tired to go shopping! When we called they knew exactly where we were located. Once again, thank you Brenda, we will be back!
If you want to be secluded but not isolated, then this is your place! Super quiet. Beautiful scenery right out the window.
Owner Supplied Testimonials
Six of us stayed here for a week and there was plenty of room for us. The oldies had the double and king beds on the ground floor, the two boys had the huge loft and another had the basement to herself along with her own bathroom. Previous guests (and we) left things behind so check what's in the cupboard before you head to Hannafords in Bar Harbor for supplies. Things like tea bags, sauces, ice cream, oven chips etc. The deck was well used for coffee in the morning and cocktails at night as well as when we barbecued and we loved watching the sunset. Great to have the washer and dryer too and am sure the stove would have been great if needed but not in July. There are fans throughout and it was warm so well used. All in all, a great place to stay. Clean and well equipped. About ten minutes from town where we loved Rupununis bar, Poor Boys restaurant and whale watching.
We rented the home for an extended family getaway. A few miles from the town of bar harbor, Brenda's chalet was perfect for 4 adults and 2 kids. The house itself was maintained very well and immaculate..all linen appeared freshly washed and changed and there were lots of towels and sheets available. Most of the kitchen and bathroom supplies were provided and there was a grill in good working condition. The view from both the upper and lower level was beautiful...and the highlight of our vacation was the beautiful sunset that we enjoyed daily.
In short, all of us loved our vacation at the cottage..this has to be the cleanest accommodations we have stayed in on vacation, yet it was warm and very cozy. We would definitely stay there again!
My family had a great time in Maine! The Harp's waterfront home was quite the treat! The log home was very comfortable and the view from the big wrap around deck was fantastic! The house was set back off the road with all the peace and quiet nature has to offer. It was only a short drive to downtown Bar Harbor where the shops and restaurants are sure to please all.
We have stayed in the Log Home and the Chalet for the past four years. We have already reserved the Log Home again for 2010. We love the Log Home because of it's location, view and the seclusion. We are very secluded there and yet only about seven miles from downtown Bar Harbor. Each year as a part of our visit we take a private two hour carriage ride all through the carriage trails on Mt. Desert Island. It is a spectacular private, jsut for two ride that takes you back to what it must have been like a hundred years ago. We love the food, the town and the people that always make our visit special.
Bottom line is we love Maine and Brenda, your Log Home is something we anticipate all year. Thanks for the communication that we have enjoyed and hope to return for many years to come.
We have rented one of Brenda's cabins for each of the last 5 years. This is our Family Vacation Week and we never know quite how many of the family will be able to attend. My wife and I have been very happy with the Log Chalet as well as the cabin on the Harp/Hawkins property. The property is only a few miles from the entrance to acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Our favorite acadia hikes are Cadillac Mountain and acadia Mountain. Don't miss the Bar Harbor Whale Watch - we always have a great photo op there. The Log Chalet is our favorite rental because of the views of Frenchman's Bay and the deck with the hummingbird feeders. I don't see us gambling on another property any time soon.
