1About San Pedro
Things to Do
The natural beauty of this area is hard to top so some of the most popular ways to enjoy yourself here are by getting out into nature. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve provides three square miles of scuba and snorkeling paradise. There you'll find four distinct areas – the reef, the seagrass beds, mangroves, and shark alley. You can also take a catamaran where you can enjoy the colorful fish without getting wet. The Bacalar Chico National Marine and Wildlife Reserve is another popular destination for nature and history lovers. Here, you’ll see green sea turtles, pumas, jaguars, and many other endangered fauna and flora that make their homes among the unspoiled reef and jungle. Situated at the northern end of Ambergris Caye, the preserve is only a short boat ride away.In 1996, the Great Blue Hole became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fascinating blue channel provides divers with an opportunity to spot marine life and discover underwater stalactites. It's beautiful, and glorious, and like something out of a science fiction movie.
Transit
There's an airstrip in San Pedro that makes access to town fairly easy. The main form of transportation in town is golf carts and you can rent them. However, it is quite costly to do so. Expect to pay around $80 a day to have one at your San Pedro vacation rental. There are also bicycles, scooters, and a few taxis you can catch from the airport. There are no car rentals available. Water taxis and ferries are common ways to get to the resorts on the north side of the island. Most everything in town is within walking distance. The sandy town streets are not paved and there aren't sidewalks so if you plan on walking, leave your heels at home.
Climate
San Pedro's weather is consistent throughout the year with high temps in the 80s and lows in the 70s. Rainy season is in September and October and some places shut down during this time.Nightlife
Life in San Pedro is casual and comfortable. The nightlife consists of boat trips looking for gators, not glamorous discos. If you find reptiles fascinating, don't miss the American Crocodile Education Sanctuary, which offers evening boat outings to find the sometimes elusive gators. If you're lucky, you'll get to hold one. Visitors looking for adult libations won't find a glitzy lounge but San Pedro's open-air beach bars are still a lot of fun.A San Pedro vacation rental feels like light years away from your normal existence. With opportunities to meet colorful sea life on once-in-a-lifetime diving expeditions, it doesn't take much of an imagination to understand why Madonna may have based her song on San Pedro when she sung about the tropical island breeze and the nature "wild and free." After experiencing it, you'll understand the call of Belize.
