Area Information
Though downtown Bellingham has a fair number of restaurants and a few galleries, the Fairhaven Historic District is the most interesting neighborhood in town (and is also the site of the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, the southern terminus for ferries to Alaska). Fairhaven was once a separate town, and many of its brick buildings, built between 1880 and 1900, have now been restored and house interesting shops, art galleries, and several good restaurants. Around the neighborhood, you'll find more than two dozen historical markers, many of which commemorate the seamier side of life in Fairhaven in the 1890s. Fairhaven Haunts and History Tours, offers 1-hour walking tours of the neighborhood. These tours are a fun way to learn about the neighborhood's history.

Today, Village Books, 1200 11th St., serves as the cultural anchor for the neighborhood and has readings and book signings. Here in Fairhaven, you'll also find several cafes and bakeries and even an old double-decker British bus that serves fish and chips. Several walking paths begin in Fairhaven. My favorite, the South Bay Trail, heads north along the shore and is actually built over the water on the Taylor Dock for part of its length. You'll find the start of this path near the northwest corner of Fairhaven Common, which is the little park at the center of Fairhaven. In summer, outdoor movies are shown in this little park.
It is also just 20 minutes walking distance to Fairhaven park featuring trails, tennis courts and picnicking.
In addition, you will be located just 10 minutes by car to most of Bellingham's finest offeringsSqualicum Harbor, downtown Bellingham, Whatcom Falls Park, Lake Padden Recreation area, and Lake Whatcom. You are also just minutes from Chuckanut Drive,
which begins on the southern edge of the Fairhaven Historic District and heads south for almost a dozen miles to the Samish farmlands, is one of the most scenic stretches of road in northwestern Washington. The road clings to the shoreline of Chuckanut and Samish bays as it winds south through the Chuckanut Mountains, which rise straight out of the water. Though most of the way is through dense woods, there are several pull-offs where you can gaze out to the San Juan Islands or up and down the rugged coastline. There are also numerous trailheads that allow you to head down to the shore or up into the Chuckanut Mountains, which are home to an extensive network of hiking and mountain-biking trails. Chuckanut Drive is particularly popular at sunset, and several good restaurants are at the southern end.

At the northern end of the drive, be sure to stop in at the Chuckanut Bay Gallery and Sculpture Garden, 700 Chuckanut Dr., which is full of interesting artworks by Northwest artists and craftspeople. Continuing south, watch for the North Chuckanut Mountain Trailhead, which provides access to Teddy Bear Cove, where you'll find a pair of tiny beaches separated by a small, rocky promontory. It's about a 2-mile round-trip hike to the cove. Although part of the trail is quite steep, part of the route follows the Interurban Trail, a 6-mile-long hiking and mountain-biking trail that follows the route of an old trolley line and extends from Fairhaven Parkway and 20th Street in Fairhaven to Larrabee State Park. This latter park is the most popular stop along Chuckanut Drive and can be quite crowded in summer. The pretty little beach and access to miles of hiking trails make this park a required stop along the scenic drive.

So Centrally Located

August 10, 2015

We go to B'ham every year for a week or longer to visit family. This location was awesome because we are only a few blocks to walk around Fairhaven, get a coffee, meander and the like. We walked down to the boardwalk and to Boulevard Park several times, Hagen's is close by, as is Mount Bakery. The place gets lots of sunshine (also...no a/c so keep blinds down in the afternoon or the living room will be smoking hot. The bedrooms were efficient and certainly large enough. The home is well equipped with cooking supplies, a few staples, and a very pleasant patio. Downside: Train is close by and loud...all hours of the day.

Faihaven Bayview Suite

August 3, 2015

Well appointed and aesthetically pleasing for lounging at leisure or cooking for a crowd, this apartment has a lovely sitting room/diner/kitchen laid out in a social way to enable everyone to enjoy a get together. The outdoor seating is comfortable and sunny (with moveable blinds to suit). The bathroom/shower room is adequately roomy with an efficient washer & dryer. Both bedrooms are spacious and well appointed with drawer and wardrobe space - comfy beds too. The apartment is well placed for a very short wander down to numerous fabulous coffee shops, grocery store and waterfront walks. The apartment is bright and airy with a good use of natural light whilst keeping the bedrooms at the back a little cooler than the front living areas. Great trip, great location, lots to see, explore and eat!

Beautiful Bay view

October 7, 2014

Spent ten days here, do not want to leave. Walked to Fairhaven most days, close to the library, ever changing weather views over the bay, misty in the mornings sunny most afternoons outstanding sunsets from the living room and porch. Comfortable furnishings, squirrels and deer provide a floor show. Easy access to I-5. Heartily recommend.

Owner's reply:

Thank you, Diana! I am so glad the 3 of you, and Wellington, enjoyed your stay so much. Looking forward to seeing you again!

Great place, perfectly appointed for a comfortable stay, great views, wonderful deck for outdoor lounging, prepared several meals in the kitchen. Very short walk to downtown Fairhaven and parts of Bellingham. Highly recommended. Do be aware that this location comes very close to the train route, which comes through day and night, and blows its horn . . .so earplugs to sleep would be advised. (All properties with close proximity to Fairhaven or near the beach will have this situation. It would not cause me to avoid this property, which is very charming and was perfect for our family of four plus occasional guests.)

What a great spot...million $ view, close to charming Fairhaven and the university. The condo was spotless and had comfy attractive furniture inside & out. The gardens were beautiful & the neighbourhood very quiet & peaceful. We also appreciated the good supply of necessities - cleaners, paper products, spices, coffee, etc. Barbara was most helpful and our neighbour, Jo, a gem. We hope to return next year.

Owner's reply:

Thank you, Faye! It was a pleasure having you and Bernie. I hope we will see you next summer!
Warm Regards, Barbara

Owner Supplied Testimonials

We recently stayed at Fairhaven Bayview Suite. The accommodations were perfect! Clean, lovely view, very roomy, and had all we could need! Plus, walking to Fairhaven for coffee shops. restaurants, and more was a sheer delight!
What a beautiful place to live! And, it has been my experience, people there are very kind, and willing to help you with questions!
We will be back, and will call on you again for lodging.
Thank you so much for helping us out.
If I were to rate our stay i would give you at 10 out of 10! - Wanda - September 2014

The Fairhaven Bayview Suite was such a find. We stayed for one week in June 2014 for much needed rest and relaxation while visiting our son and daughter-in-law who live in downtown Bellingham. We loved being in Fairhaven and watching the waterviews, perfect sunsets and the deer who (unfortunately for the owners) visited the beautiful gardens often. We had a very short walk into Fairhaven and enjoyed getting out early for breakfast and a walk along the water. Perfect way to start the day. We never wanted to leave in the late afternoon to miss the beautiful sunlight and then right into the sunsets (at 927pm!). Fortunately there is a fully equipped kitchen which we made good use of. Barbara of OneSuiteStay was a pleasure to work with and we also enjoyed meeting the upstairs owner. It felt like we were in our own home. The wall of windows and large front deck were our favorite spots but the rest of the house was nice too including having a washer and dryer. We will be back as it was the perfect quiet place to spend our vacation. Sue and Allan Thompson, Bloomfield, Connecticut -- June 2014.
