Area Information
You can bike, drive or even walk, into Historic Todd...only five miles to enjoy fresh baked muffins and coffee at the Todd Mercantile, or venture into the General Store on Friday night for free live mountain music. If you are looking for activities, Rivergirl Fishing Company is there in the old train station, and Kelly will be glad to take you fly fishing, or drop you in for a leisurely paddle or tube down the oldest river in North America. Biking on the Railroad Grade Road is also a popular pastime along the river in Todd (see the Rivergirl for rentals). The Elk Knob State Wilderness Park (elev. 5600 ft.) is a short drive away and a hike to the top provides an incredible panoramic vista as well as a keen view of the Long Hope Valley which is considered one of the biological crown jewels of the Southern Appalachians, overshadowing even the Great Smoky Mountains for its diversity of plant life. Weather permitting the lodge provides a great view of the sunrise across the rim of this high mountain valley each daybreak. Ashe and Watauga County are home to many parks, including Mount Jefferson, Grandfather Mountain, the New River State Park, Moses Cone and the NC game-lands at Three Top Mountain, the Peak Mountain and a thousand plus game-land acres a ten minute hike up the creek from the lodge. The winter months provide opportunities for cross country skiing as well as down hill at one of our numerous local slopes. Of course for many the lodge is the destination : a place to revitalize, a place to deepen relationships, a place for play, learning and inspiration.

We really enjoyed our stay. There was plenty of room for us all to eat, sleep and visit. There is only 2 bathrooms but we managed. We had beautiful weather and really had a good time. The road in to the house was very rugged and that was the only drawback to the house. It was everything that was advertised and more. If it was available, we would stay there again.

Great amenities and view- owner has thought of everything. You really never need to leave this masterpiece but lots of thing to do nearby as well. If you are a nature lover this is perfect. Home is beautiful, spotless and well stock. Setting is fabulous. Only down side is the 1/2 mile road with terrible pot holes. Charming in every way, owners gracious and caring towards guest needs. Just lovely....we will be back...

This was the best "family time" vacation we have ever taken. There was so much for us to do together. We hiked the grounds, played frisbee and badmitten in the large open area, played ping pong and spent a great deal of time together in the large kitchen/den area. We celebrated Thanksgiving, a 27th anniversary and our daughters 23rd bday there....all during our 5 day stay. We went to Boone and West Jefferson to do some shopping and enjoyed the Blue Grass time at the Todd General Store on Friday night. The Long Hope is very welcoming and comfortable. We will go back. To top it off, we had snow on Thanksgiving day. God could not have blessed us with a better time! Ron was great to rent from. He checked on us after we got there to be sure things were ok. Thank you for sharing your "home away from home" with us.

Relaxing time!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Long Hope! The weather was gorgeous, so we spent a lot of our time exploring the grounds around the house. October was such a beautiful time to go, as the leaves were beginning to change. Actually, it was hard to get us to leave and venture out of the house because we had fun cooking together in the spacious kitchen, playing the piano, having a glass of wine in the outdoor hot tub, and just enjoying the overall feeling of peace. Ron was most helpful and made sure everything was taken care of beforehand. A couple of sidenotes: the road up to the house can be steep and has a few pot holes. We managed to get there safely in a Prius though!! Also, know the rules of pond usage in case your party wants to fish there. It's easier to go to Boone for supplies (15 min) than West Jefferson. If you get a chance, visit Todd General Store on Friday night for country cooking and good bluegrass. Beautiful pictures to take as well!! Enjoy and rent with confidence! :)

wonderful house for our staff retreat

June 17, 2009

The staff of Wilkes Developmental Day School spent three days at the lodge for our annual staff development and this was our best experience so far. The house is beautiful and clean and we had everything we needed. No need to leave the property-there was so much to do and to enjoy. It really helped us as a group to connect and to get to know each other better- we left relaxed with many great memories and we are now ready to go back and do what we love most, working with young children who have developmental disabilities. We highly recommend this house to anyone.

We loved the Longhope Retreat. It was a great place for a big family to gather. The kitchen and family room were ideal for a big crowd. The upstairs was great for the kids and teenagers to congregate. The house had lots of beautiful artwork. The house itself was an artpiece.
