Founded in 1873, the town boasts an estimated population of 275 (2000 census: 179), with an estimated 1,000 residents in nearby subdivisions. Just 2 miles south of Pete's cabin, you can mix with the locals at one of its restaurants/bars, or the health food store/coffee shop, explore intriguing shops, and mail off the treasures you bought at the post office, and inquire about life above it all at one of the real estate offices. There are five 14ers that rise above the town: Mt. Sherman (14,007), Mt.Bross (14,172 feet), Mt. Lincoln (14,286 feet), Mt. Democrat (14,148 feet), and Mt. Cameron (14,238 feet). There are many 12 and 13ers as well! Many old mining claims crisscross the high mountains, with several that are still operational. In the height of their heyday, the mines produced over $1,500,000 in minerals annually. Some of their colorful names include the Orphan Boy Mine, Dolly Varden Mine, Sweet Home Mine, Little Daisy Mine, and London Mine. There are many great things to see and do in and around Alma. The Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area lies just below treeline on Mt. Bross and is a favorite location for photographers, artists, and those that just love hiking and taking in the views. Bristlecone Pines are native to the Rocky Mountains and are thousands of years old. For a driving adventure, take a drive up Buckskin Gulch all the way to Kite Lake, past remnants of the mining days, such as the Paris Mill, and visible high on the bluffs overlooking Buckskin Creek, the Hungry Five Mine with buildings still clinging to the sheer rock. For a relaxing change of pace try fly-fishing on the Middle Fork of the South Platte River or angling on the shore at Montgomery Reservoir. So much to do and see!

“Perfect location, wonderful home!”

Reviewed 22 Jan 2017

Our stay at Pete's Cabin last summer was wonderful. We absolutely love the location, so quiet with the BEST view from the front deck! The cabin is extremely well-cared for and well-stocked with more than we could ever need. It was VERY clean and quite comfortable; we felt at home right away. Our family of 5 had more than enough room! Having the downstairs entry was terrific for unloading backpacks and fishing supplies after a fun day out. The drive to Breck is only about 20 minutes and a lovely, picturesque route. Even if you choose to stay near the cabin, there is plenty of hiking and fishing VERY close by. In fact, ours kids enjoyed playing in the woods behind the house and along the river in front. A visit to the coffeehouse in nearly Alma is a treat as well. If/when we return the the Breckenridge area, we would gladly return to Pete's Cabin!

“Winter Paradise”

Reviewed 5 Jan 2015

Our family (7) met at Pete's Cabin for an after Christmas week of skiing and hanging out. We were impressed by the lovely cabin, the amazing views and the location. As our week progressed we began to plan things to do when we came back in the summer or fall! We were prepared by the owner, in advance, for the wintry struggles of a steep driveway and mountain roads-that was SO helpful! We loved Pete's Cabin and will be going back!

“Lovely Cabin”

We were beyond satisfied with our stay at Pete's Cabin. Everything we could possibly think of was provided for us to use. We made most of our meals in the full kitchen and really felt at home throughout our stay. The cabin was very clean and just the right amount of privacy for us. We enjoyed the outside scenery, the daily fires in the fireplace, and the beautiful decor. We had a wonderfully White Christmas and enjoyed playing in the snow. We had plenty of room for our family of 8. It would be a bonus if we could return again in the future. Thanks so much for opening your home to us. It was fabulous!

“Pete's Cabin was a great location!”

We stayed in Pete's Cabin and it was a great location for us. We love fishing and hiking, and the cabin was located near a great trout stream and one of the best fishing reservoirs in the area. We caught many fish and appreciated the closeness to the fishing areas. We also went on several hikes and that were within 20 minutes of the cabin. The cabin had everything we needed and worked out perfectly for the 5 of us.

“Fantastic!”

“Enjoy the mountains without the crowds”

Reviewed 16 Jun 2014

Pete's Place is now a part of our family. We plan on making trips yearly at the very least. We escaped from cell phones, and internet....and found ourselves refreshed. High country mountain hikes, and nights by the fire. Fishing out the front door.....in the lake, and sunrises on Mt. Bross and Mt. Lincoln each morning. Wildlife surrounding us (red fox, mule deer, humming birds.....to Rocky Mountain Sheep and Mountain Goats each morning across the valley). There is no more perfect cabin out there. Cozy, and inviting....yet any glance out the windows takes your breath away. The two separate bedrooms create privacy, while the loft is larger than any loft I have ever seen. There are two QUEEN size beds in the loft, yet there is space on either side of them, and more space for the library. I bet no more than 6 cars drove past on any given day. You have to look very hard to see the neighbors though the trees, and you feel like you have the entire valley all to yourself.

“Awesome Trip!”

From the mouth of an 18 yr old! A man's weekend with 3 dads and boys who just celebrated turning 18 and Senior Year of High School who had a WONDERFUL time at Pete's Cabin. Perfectly located with access to Breckenridge and Beaver Creek. Everything they could have asked for and more! Beautiful views, perfect living arrangements and everything provided at the cabin plus more! When the teenage son says it was awesome, I know it was a great trip at a great location. Everything was perfect even down to the guy plowing the driveway the morning of a snowfall so they could get to the hill as early as possible! Thanks so much for opening your cabin to our family! Highly Recommended!
