Town: The coastal town of Cahersiveen rests along the River Fertha, at the foot of Beentee Mountain. This County Kerry town is known for being the birthplace of Daniel O'Connell, and was renowned in the 19th century for the salting of Atlantic fish. Today the town retains strong ocean links with an excellent harbour and marina offering sailing, trout and salmon fishing and deep-sea angling. Cahersiveen provides a mix of traditional pubs and modern venues, along with a host of cafés, restaurants and interesting craft and antique shops. Cahersiveen is the principle town of the Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve, making it a wonderful base for astronomers. Explore nearby hidden coves, walk the Kerry Way, visit two stone forts, discover the fascinating archaeological remains at nearby Waterville, or take a short drive or ferry crossing to the lovely Valentia Island. The impressive sea crag of Skellig Michael, set in the Atlantic Ocean, is worth a visit and was also used as the setting for scenes in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens film.
