"Cat" for catastrophe

This house has good bones, but that is where it ends. The "outside shower" was truly outside, no enclosure and broken bricks for a floor. Screened in porch only works if there aren't huge holes in it. Furniture was dirty and old. The house was dirty and in disrepair. The AC did work in most rooms, the only redeeming feature. Yard overgrown and not taken care of. Was afraid to use the grill, the cover was scary enough. The owner didn't answer my 5 messages for 2.5 days. She did agree to put me in another house for the remainder of the week, which I accepted. Do not rent this house unless you are 18 and looking for a party-crashing house. The town is lovely but many homes in disrepair. No action here, there are a couple of great restaurants in town. The beach is quiet but the water very, very shallow. Sunsets are the thing to watch.

GREAT TOWN, GREAT PRICE

July 21, 2010

We had the best 4th of July vacation in Cape Charles... beaching, boating, fishing, fireworks, sea glass and sand dollar hunting, and fun. THANKS to Rob for fixing the AC and many other things during his visit midweek!! We survived the one night without AC, but would not have survived any longer. The price is great, but the Cathouse could use a few fixes. Just suggestions for an even better time... cut the bushes, add a table for eating to accommodate the number the house sleeps (ps. we did not have more people than allowed), fix the hole in the living area ceiling and the refrigerator shelf, add real steps to back deck, add a clothesline, need waterhose access outside especially to rinse the front porch and back deck, add handles to kitchen drawers, update the laundry room floor and equipment, need a new toilet seat downstairs, update floor to outside shower, vacuum up the dog hair from previous renter's pets, add more than one queen bed, and be kind to nice family renters. Again, we had a fabulous vacation and thanks again to Rob for coming from Richmond to make some quick fixes.

The house is 5 blocks from the beach, and 1 block from main street so you have the best of both. The house is full of old charm as most houses in Cape Charles. For the price and size you can't beat it. As always the town is beautiful, charming and friendly.

we had a wonderful vacation, but the house pictures on the web site are of two differnt houses. the one we actually rented had only three bedrooms, no outdoor shower, and only slept 6 at the most. The house was several blocks from the Cape Charles beach, but it was comfortable for the five of us. It would not be appropriate for anyone who had problems with stairs, as it is an old house and the stairs are steep. The owner did not respond to messages we left regarding a minor problem. the townspeople are great, very hospitable. there are good restaurants and a quiet calm, clean beach area.

This landlord does not pay attention to detail and messed up our reservation. The house had not been cleaned and wasn't ready for us when we arrived in the late afternoon on our scheduled day. Nor could we reach the landlord by phone. Our family ended up having to stay in a motel the first night and after that we scrambled to make other vacation plans. Make sure you check out Cape Charles before staying there. "Quaint" is not an accurate description of this town. "Ghost town" is more like it. I would give this place a less than one star review.

We were very pleased with the location and the overall appearance of the cottage, but very displeased with the overall lack of communication from the property owner and the misleading information on this page regarding amenities at the home. There is, for example, no hair dryer, iron, DVD player, access to a pool, and there were literally no instructions in the home regarding emergency contacts, etc. The door to the home was in very poor condition. On the one hand, it's lovely to be in a location where you can exist with relatively little to no worry. On the other hand, visiting a new place simply necessitates that the owner do the bare minimum to communicate with visitors in advance, and to ensure that contingencies are considered in advance. We would have chosen another location had we known none of those amenities actually existed. Also, the advertised rental rate on the site was incorrect; she charged more.

Testimonial from Sherri and Family: It is now 2011 and I have been coming to Cape Charles with my family since 2003. My introduction to Cape Charles was 527 Randolph Ave., "The Cat House". No, there are no cats, but an owner named Catherine Nottingham. A lovely woman who goes above and beyond to accommodate our needs. We love the 1894 Victorian Home with its' unique charm and whimsical yard. My daughter is now 15 years old and when asked where would you like to go....The Cat House. This community is warm, has old charm, and a family destination for 8 years. Watching the sunset is beautiful.. Enjoy as we do!!
