Area Information
The picturesque harbour town of Gordon's Bay lies in a secluded cove on the eastern shore of False Bay, about 50kms from Cape Town. It is set against the steep slopes of the Helderberg, complete with old-style charm, narrow streets and a bustling waterfront. Boat trips and deep sea fishing trips in False Bay can be booked at the old harbour.

The beaches are beautiful with white sand, rock pools, shallow paddling areas and calm seas. The sea is much warmer than you will find on the Atlantic coast. Bikini Beach has been awarded Blue Flag status, an international quality rating of the highest order.

For the true romantics, stroll along the harbour wall or enjoy a sunset cruise. The harbour also offers a number of excellent seafood restaurants. The sheltered waters of the picturesque cove welcomes sailors, surfers, fishermen, water-skiers and wind surfers from around the world. Follow Beach Road through Gordon's Bay, via Clarence Drive (R44) en route towards Kleinmond and Hermanus. The view from the Steenbras River Bridge is particularly dramatic and the gorge offers good hikes up to the rock pools. Beyond the mouth of the Steenbras River you will find Koggelbaai, one of the most scenic beaches renowned for surfing and film shoots.

CLIMATE: The climate is Mediterranean. Average maximum temperatures peak at 30 degrees from December to March, dropping to 18 degrees from May to September. Summers are warm and dry, with the occasional windy day. Spring and Autumn have mild and balmy days and a warm evenings. Winters tend to be mild. Short lived storms which are wet and cool, interspersed with sunny days.

South Africa's first Iron man Triathlon was held in Gordon's Bay in 2000 and 2001 and attracted triathletes from across the world. German cyclist Jan Ullrich regularly frequents Gordon's Bay to put in some practice mileage. -· The False Bay 50, is a 50km run to Kleinmond and back, while a harbour-to-harbour swim is held annually between Harbour Island and the Gordon's Bay Harbour. -· Gordon's Bay has also twice hosted the Lipton Cup sailing race and numerous regattas are regularly held. The town is home to world-famous sailing personality the late Bertie "Biltong" Reed, who also owned a restaurant at Harbour Island. -· There are also a few walks and trails available, including the Danie Miller trail above the village and the historic cannon and wagon wheel walk at Sir Lowry's Pass.
