About the area

The immediate area is Pioneer Point, as Raskob called his estate. It is more than two square miles, most of which is still farmland and woods. Raskob's main houses, one for himself and his guests and the other for his twelve children, are now owned by Russia and are used—or were—as a vacation facility for embassy staff. (As you may have heard, in response to Russia's email hacking, its Pioneer Point facility has been closed by order of the U.S. government.) One way to view the Pioneer Point area is to click on "Map" above the photos and then switch to the satellite option. On a regional scale, Maryland's Eastern Shore is one of the nation's great vacation areas. It is characterized by tidewater rivers that penetrate far inland from Chesapeake Bay. Each river has its own port used by watermen and recreational boaters. These old towns -- nearly all date from the eighteenth century -- have excellent restaurants and cafes and a wide variety of stores, galleries, and specialty shops. From our house, the nearest town is Centreville, located a few miles—12 minutes—to the east. It is the seat of Queen Anne's County and has restaurants and all the usual stores, including large supermarkets. Chestertown is a half-hour's drive to the north, and Easton is 40 minutes to the south. At nearby Queenstown there are two highly rated golf courses that you can find online. Also in Queenstown is the Prime Outlets mall, one of the best of its kind. The Kent Narrows, located just west of Queenstown, is the site of a half-dozen popular seafood restaurants and crab decks overlooking the water. Some families that rent from us enjoy day trips to Annapolis (40 minutes), St. Michaels (50 minutes), Baltimore (75 minutes), and Washington (80 minutes).

Getting around

You will need a car.

Getting here

Usually renters reach our vacation house by driving from their homes. Often they bring boats. If you are coming from a distant state, the nearest airport is Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport, where you can, of course, rent a car. More about the area is described below.

Interaction with guest

Except on rare occasions, we are on hand to meet renters when they arrive. The usual procedure is to explain various features and answer questions. We are also available via email.

“Great house!”

Reviewed 4 Oct 2016

We definitely enjoyed this house. So many interesting conversation pieces, and more books than you could possibly read on a vacation......all subjects. We especially enjoyed reading the book Alan had written himself....so much information about the area. Unfortunately we picked the wrong 4 day weekend to come. Rained every day except the day we left when we returned home by way of Annapolis. We had hoped to sit out on the dock with coffee or drinks, use the canoes, and sit around the fire pit. But the weather did not cooperate. In spite of the weather we did manage a day trip to Chesapeake City, and another to St. Michaels. Both being only 30-40 minutes from the house. We did throw 2 crab traps in but being so late in the season we only got one....lucky for him, not enough even for soup, so we let him go. We had not expected the house to be so far out in the country, but actually enjoyed being further away from hustle, bustle, and automobile sounds. When we did stay in there was plenty of room for all of us to play games or watch TV together, or go off into another room to curl up with a book. The kitchen was equipped with everything you could possibly need to prepare your meals. Alan was wonderful to work with and responded quickly to any questions we had. I would definitely recommend this rental.

“Fantastic Vacation”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2015

What a great vacation week we had! The house was exactly what we wanted. We brought our boat to crab on the Chester River, which we did 5 of 7 days. We all had lots of fun in the pool and some even went out with the canoe. There was plenty of room for the 10 of us to do whatever we wanted and not get in each other's way. The property is gorgeous with all the plants, flowers, etc. and is so peaceful and relaxing. We are talking about coming back again next year. Alan was a gracious host and supplied us with all the info. we needed. Thanks again Alan for allowing us to enjoy our vacation in your home! Looking forward to coming back again soon!

“Great Home!”

Reviewed 18 Nov 2014

My boys and I traveled to Maryland from Pittsburgh for a Lacrosse Tournament. Myself and another Mom decided to rent the home; as it was close to the tournament site in Centreville. In addition, we preferred not to be cooped up in a hotel with six boys over the weekend. Upon arrival we were greeted by our gracious host Mr. Fisher; who gave us a run down on the particulars of the home and the area. The house was very quaint, charming and clean. The kitchen was very well equipped and the dishes and silverware were of good quality. Needless to say the boys had a wonderful time enjoying the outdoors! They fished off the dock and at night sat around the fire pit. When we asked the boys what they thought the best part of the weekend was, they all agreed it was renting the great house! Thank you Mr. and Mrs Fisher!

“Wonderful Weekend”

Reviewed 31 May 2014

We had a wonderful weekend at this house. The location is beautiful and we enjoyed the privacy and quiet. Our teenagers loved the pool and canoeing. We had fires in the fire pit two nights and in the fireplace in the house one night. The house is not fancy, but it the hosts make it welcoming and comfortable, and the house is spotlessly clean. This was the best-equipped kitchen in any vacation house we've ever rented. I hope we have an opportunity to rent it again in the future.

“Truly a 5-star Experience”

Reviewed 3 Jan 2014

The setting of this home is gorgeous, equalled only by the home itself, which is absolutely lovely and impressively equipped, the owners' communications with us, and the price. Beds were comfortable, linens were superior to any other place we have rented, the kitchen was large, well-stocked and had everything anyone could possible need. We wish we could have stayed longer, and would love to spend time here during the warm weather and take advantage of the large in-ground pool and the creek. You just cannot go wrong in choosing this vacation home.

“a wonderful family home”

Reviewed 7 Dec 2013

We had a memorable and delightful Thanksgiving at this incredibly special home. Our host, Alan, met us upon arrival and showed us around - so kind and very helpful. Though dreadful weather, the fireplace kept us warm, the sun porch was delightful, and we had a great time cooking together in the incredibly well-equipped kitchen. Was absolutely terrific !!

We had a terrific time at your place.

Water sports -- Sailed across the Chester to Fryingpan Cove. Kayaked Grove Creek out to the sandy swim beach at the entrance. We anchored the catboat (nice photogenic addition to your pics) there too as our base of operations while we swam, fished, paddled and picnicked. We did this on two days we enjoyed it so.

Powerboat rental -- Drove up to Rolphs Wharf where our reserved 18-foot Bowrider (with bimini) was waiting: $300 for 1/2 day, $375 for whole day plus gas you use. Mid-week the marina was all but deserted with most activity in the on-site pool (it was the hot day of the week). Good experience there, answered all my questions and went over boat operation and safety with me. We took a half day and used about 30 gallons! Travelled down Chester to the Corsica anchoring for a swim and lunch off the beach at "Russian Point". Then buzzed around down and up into Grove Creek a bit. Back out and across to Langford Creek and up the right branch as far as "Lovely Cove." Anchored again for a brief swim near Cacaway Island. Switching skippers, we ran back out of Langford and all the way to Rolphs to return the boat on time. A nice way to stay cool and see the beautiful waterways.

Brief sail with all out on the Chester with light wind. Boys jumped in behind boat and dragged behind on a short tow to cool off.

Launch & recover -- The ramp was very easy to use and the trips on the Corsica were a treat with the views. Not too long a trip even at 6 mph. Your dock was also a treat as my dock on Little Egg Harbor (NJ bay) is subject to wider tide range, almost constant wave action and the occasional big surge from storms.

The Region -- Centerville was an easy hop for groceries, pizza and the Creamery. The people were very friendly and helpful. It seems you enjoy the best lifestyle there. We dined at the Fish Whistle in Chestertown which has a nice view but the food was only so-so in my opinion. We took a day trip to Mount Vernon; a nicely done museum we wanted to share with the boys on a hot day with dinner after at Fisherman's Inn on Kent Island, always consistent.

We have rented several waterfront places over the years and have had great success doing so. Your place was much more of a home than all others: decor unusual and well coordinated not to mention interesting. Is that music framed on the mantel or what language? Art in itself! Great kitchen with every implement. Planned to make s'mores in the fire pit outside but didn't make it. Did use the Weber in the side yard, thanks! Everyone liked swimming in the pool. The house is charming and warm.

After the trip my oldest called me to say it was the best vacation ever. We had a great one! There really are very few places to rent and none like yours. Although it only took me a short while to locate you on the web, I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend a week with my family in such a peaceful place.

Our best to you,

The Taylors
