At Home on the Road!
Good Value in Historic Charleston
July 3, 2015
We stayed in Apt B (upstairs) for 7 weeks: Nov-Dec 2014 - Charleston was our first destination after selling our condo in Chicago to adopt a full-time 'work during travel' lifestyle (well-traveled professional couple in 40s and 50s.) The location is great - just a few blocks from upper King and on a lovely street (loved Pane e Vino!). Kathleen was very helpful and responsive before and during our stay, especially with securing us temporary parking. The unit is dated and wasn't thoroughly cleaned before move-in (Kathleen offered to address right away.) The clawtub shower wasn't ideal - awkward accessing and shower curtain clings. The bed and sectional sofa were very comfortable, the unit was quiet and private, and laundry was very convenient at the bottom of the stairs. The rental rate is very reasonable in a city with NYC prices! The shared back porch was in need of some TLC. All in all it was a fine way to kick off our travel/work adventures in the very fine Holy City!
great stay in Charleston
September 2, 2014
I was at Kathleen's home with my 14 yrs. old son for 4 nights this past month of August. It was simply fantastic! First of all Kathleen: she was not a host, she was our best friend since the first minute. Great information before booking, and all the time through till the end of our stay. A personal touch which made our holiday unforgettable. My son got sick and she was the best person we could have beside us. We exchanged chats. ideas, laughs and smiles since the beginning. Then the house: an old beautiful Victoraina house, very close to King street but absolutely quiet and noise-less. Everything was at walking distance, and when we were at home we were in the most peaceful spot on earth.... Third, Charleston, but you sure don't need me to tell you it's just beautiful.
I am hoping to get some kind of group together to visit his agri-tourist farm. wine being made there and the beauty of his place looks amazing. What a magical time it was with this wonderful Father and son. A month worth remembering for years to come. thanks for the very generous review. Hoping to see you in Italy!

Great location, even better host!

We just returned from a two night stay in Kathleen's king suite and we loved the room's charm. I joked that my mother looked like a queen on the bed, as the walls and high ceiling made it fit for a royal. To further that point, the beds were extremely comfortable, even the pull out bed. We stayed during a very hot week, but could not complain because Kathleen provided multiple fans to cool us off at night. The front porch of the house is a great place to relax and have a drink, too. The house is centrally located on Warren St., and we found her street to be the quietest of all. Not to say the rest of the areas are overloaded with trash and noise, but Warren St. had an overwhelming feeling of cleanliness and safety. All of the houses are beautiful. In the mornings, Kathleen provided homemade biscuits and fruit and made us feel right at home from the beginning. If you want to learn more about the historical aspects of Charleston, she has many books and guides to refer to, for one of which her husband even wrote the introduction. The house also has a spacious backyard with a wonderful patio to sit and have breakfast or to just enjoy the scenery. Kathleen opened this, as well as her kitchen, up to her guests every day. She was just fantastic. We will not hesitate to try and stay here again when we return to Charleston. Thank you Kathleen!
Elated that you were so happy and comfortable. Hope to continue hosting but for now the city of Charleston has placed new restrictions on home owners downtown in renting short term. I suppose I could call our place soon The Underground Inn. ha. Thanks again for this stellar review. Enjoyed meeting you both- Hope you can return and stay with us again.

Found this rental on craigslist and knew it was just what we were looking for. We were in town wanting to see the sites and explore all the history and staying here made this easier than expected. We never had to move the car because of the great location and the ease to use the free trolley available downtown. Kathleen was a great hostess and made sure our every need was attended to. She made us biscuits and sat them on our doorstep several mornings and answered every question we had as to where to eat and what to do. Her home was full of history and she was more than happy to share her knowledge of the area with us. Just walk several blocks in any direction and you can enjoy the sights of historic Charleston. Any hotel that was as convenient as this place would have cost triple what Kathleen charges and would not have a person as nice as her looking out for you. Anyone looking for a place to call home for a few days should look no farther than staying with Kathleen, you will not regret it.

Fabulous location/great hostess
March 26, 2014
Not enough can be said about this location -- It's only about 3 blocks from the visitor's center, which also means it's close to everything. We chose to walk everywhere rather than hop on one of the 3 trolleys that will take visitors all over the historic district of Charleston. The apartment is roomy, with a living room/ kitchen area separate from the bedroom. Important when one of us gets up much later than the other one! The bed is so comfortable and gave us a chance to recover each night before we hit the sights again the next day. Our only issue was that my husband's allergies were set off by the dust. There is also construction going on next door, which is totally out of our hostess' hands. Kathleen is a delightful hostess and gave us great hints for making the most of our experience. Highly recommend this as a wonderful place to stay while exploring historic Charleston.
Wonderful home and Wonderful Hostess
November 19, 2013
I've stayed in private homes all over the world, and I must say that, without a doubt, Kathleen is one of the kindest, most helpful hosts I have encountered. She went above and beyond to make me feel at home. I plan on staying with her again whenever I am in Charleston and I've spread the word to my friends and family as well. The home itself is also beautiful and spacious, as is the neighborhood where it is located. It is an easy five minute walk to the top of King Street. I stayed in the main house and I slept the best I have in months. I, without hesitation, recommend contacting Kathleen for a true gem of an experience nestled in a quiet neighborhood of fabulous Charleston.
What a wonderful review! It was delightful to have you stay with us and of course we hope you will grace our home with many repeat visits. Congratulations on your up and coming wedding. What a terrific city to have this lovely event to happen. Thanks for choosing our place to stay while bravely venturing out on your own to make the plans. I am sure it will be perfect!

Felt like home in Charleston
September 9, 2013
Kathleen (the home owner) was so easy to work with and so much fun to chat with. The guest apartment was very comfortable and was kept very cool (so was a great relief from the heat outside) and it felt like home with a great sectional, beautiful wood floors, and a great little kitchen! The bedroom stayed cool, too, and the bed was big and comfortable. Kathleen was also very helpful and allowed us to park in the driveway during our stay to avoid parking tickets. The apartment had all we needed and more for our short stay in Charleston. Also, the location was perfect - just a couple blocks off the main street in town (King Street) so it was nice and quiet but within a 5 minute walk, we were back in the action - close to bars, restaurants, etc.
We'll be back
August 10, 2013
We spent three nights with Kathleen and the place was perfect. Nice and quiet around the back of the main house. Easy walk to king street restaurants and shops. Kathleen had everything we needed for our stay and we took advantage of the grill for dinner on the back porch one night. We will definitely be back on our next visit to Charleston.
pleasant stay in Charleston neighborhood.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PLACE TO STAY
July 4, 2013
I found this apartment via email search in that I was looking for something centrally located in Charleston & also economical. Based on other reviews, I chose this property for my daughter & myself. We stayed in the upstairs apart. suite and couldn't have been happier. Kathleen is a WONDERFUL host in that she's readily available if you need her, happy to recommend the best restaurants, and provide just about anything to make your stay enjoyable and comfortable. Towels are provided (including beach towels)and soap, shampoo/conditioners & body lotions. The apartment was nicely furnished with a small, basic kitchen if you cared to do basic cooking. The rooms are nicely decorated and the bed and furnishings are very comfortable. It was an easy walk to restaurants and Kudu coffee shop and minutes from Marian Square in which my daughter and I either walked to places or took the nearby trolly located at the visitors center. You don't need a car to get around unless you plan on going to the beaches. If you do rent a car, you can either park in the street or in the driveway. Kathleen even made us some delicious fruit crepes on our day of departure! I would not recommend this apartment if one has difficulty with stairs or stepping into a stand-alone tub/shower. Otherwise I would highly recommend staying here! It was perfect for us!!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this terrific review! I was truly inspired by how you set a vacation time aside for just you and your daughter. The trip was so carefully planned that you both didn't miss much of what Charleston offers. You should be very proud of your daughter as she should be of you. Weather was not the best but nothing but smiles daily from you both. Thanks for choosing our place and letting us get to know the two of you.

Great Location ... Potentially Charming
June 27, 2013
The location was fabulous... walking distance to restaurants & visitor's center. Parking limited due to shared space with other tenants (1st come, 1st serve). Internet was limited to specific areas in the unit. We are seasoned travelers, & found this property to be less attractive than the description & photos portrayed. However, it was reasonably priced.
Cozy Apartment in Historic Charleston
June 3, 2013
My boyfriend and I stayed for 3 night's at Kathleen's place. The apartment has a separate entrance (it's nice that's it's private) and is at the back of the house. We were very busy the entire trip but enjoyed the accommodations very much. Wish we had more time to spend on the lovely back porch! Overall, you can't beat this value and it was great to have a kitchen and some extra space as opposed to just a small hotel room! Thanks for hosting us Kathleen!
April 22, 2013
Kathleen is a gracious host and the apartment was very nice, comfortable and had everything we needed including coffee and a few soft drinks. The location is ideal.
Convenient location, comfortable accomodations
March 12, 2013
well appointed apartment, that included a parking pass at a nearby garage, a must in Charleston. Kitchen sink and garbage disposal need repair. Pots and pans as well as baking dishes need updating. Owner responded and solved a TV problem quickly. A lovely place to stay when visiting a wonderful city.

Couldn't be nicer
January 29, 2013
A wonderful two-week stay in glorious weather. Kathleen and Robert couldn't have been nicer. Bella & Simon (dogs) too..nice because it was my first visit back in C'ton without my late pooch; they helped. Not sure about the cats! In between apt. hunting I explored some neighbourhoods not berfore seen, with the guide Robert wrote the intro for! ("Complete Charleston" by M H Moore). Upper King is hopping, the free trolley scooting down to Broad St. works a charm, the Piggly Wiggly a wee walk away but convenient, camellias and cassia in bloom. It all confirmed my desire to move to the Holy City and lo and behold found a wonderful place for April 1st. Here I come, Queen of American cities!

If you'd like to imagine what it was like back in historical times, rent this property. Four poster rice bed, armoire, lovely accouterments right down to the claw foot tub in the bathroom. Very private as well.

We would stay here again in a heartbeat. The location was very convenient and the apartment was so cute. The best part was our hostess, Kathleen. She was wonderful! Highly recommend!!!

The apartment was nice, clean and comfortable. Convienient to King Street and Visitors Center
October 8, 2012
Nice to have washer dryer. the mini-frig, stove top and microwave all worked fine. No place to be! Very small room - smaller than most hotel rooms I have stayed in, and with the amount of stuff in it,we almost needed to walk sideways! Patio area looks private on the photo, but it was actually just at the top of the access steps for all other units on second floor. Great, however, to be able to walk all over from there. It is - about 20 blocks from the market, and 25 or so blocks from the Battery. So not exactly close - we were a little hesitant to be outdoors after dark walking that far in a strange city.
Wonderful location - comfortable apt.

Enjoyed our stay. Loved the location and the apartment had everything we needed. Very comfortable, private and lovely owners.

Kathleen was such a gracious host....loved everything about her....and her Victorian house. The location was perfect and close to everything. The apartment was great for the two of us, and the bed was really comfortable! There were a few treats and a bottle of wine ready for us upon arrival. Very sweet! Anyway, loved the free trolleys, the outstanding restaurants, the visitors center, the College of Charleston, the Battery, all the history and basically all that Charleston has to offer. But, back to the accommodations, we definitely would recommend staying at Kathleen's to anyone who wanted to pay a visit.
Great place, Great people

This is a great place to stay! You can see all of Charleston right out the front door. No need to drive anywhere. Had a great time and enjoyed our visits with Kathleen and her family.

Perfect location for seeing Charleston on foot. Very roomy apartment with everything you need. Hosts couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful. Definitely be back!!!
Thanks for keeping the place in tip top shape! It is true about walking--the cars stay parked. Apt.B (not pictured or described in detail on the websight as Apt A is the one shown) has all of the stairs Victorian homes give-and you were a trooper as well as your daughter and friend. Brava! Hope to see you again.

What a wonderful place to stay in Charleston! Convenient, quiet, comfortable, and affordable. The hosts are kind and knowledgeable about the area. I could not more highly recommend this property.
Perfect place to enjoy Charleston!
February 22, 2012
We were in town for SEWE and wanted a place with a kitchen that was in a quiet area. The apartment was clean and quite large with plenty of room for us to spread out and relax after long days. The kitchen has everything you need to cook with and plenty of space to do so. My only compliant was that the coffee pot was to small! We are big coffee drinkers and the pot was a 2 cup pot. Kathleen was great and very helpful. We had a small problem with a leak in the sink and it was fixed right away. We would stay here again the next time we go to Charleston.

I can't say enough great things about this apartment and Kathleen's hospitality! This was our first trip to Charleston, and the apartment was cozy, clean, private, and comfortable. Best of all, it was close to everywhere we wanted to be! Within walking distance of all the great shops and restaurants, it was the perfect getaway for an extended weekend. The apartment was stocked with everything we needed- from small things like tea and coffee (and fresh bagels!), to plush and comfortable robes in the armoire in the bedroom along with the comfiest bed, and we couldn't have been more pleased. If you are looking for a great place to stay, don't hesitate and contact Kathleen! She went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and welcome. We will definitely be staying here next time we visit beautiful Charleston.

This was our first trip to charleston, great location only a few blocks to the visitors center , King Ave , Meeting Street, Marion park and LOVED those FREE Trollies! Kathleen was always there for us with helpful directions and DELICIOUS plates of home baked food. The cranberry scones and egg dishes were ohhhh so good!! The apartment was very comfortable, and stocked with coffee, teas and juices. We hated to leave but will be back soon to visit Charleston and Kathleen. Thanks Kathleen for your Southern hospitality We had so much fun sightseeing and returning to that comfy 4 poster bed!

Great place to stay when seeing Charleston
October 7, 2011
We had a wonderful time in Charleston, and thoroughly enjoyed staying in this apartment. Kathleen was a most gracious hostess. The apartment is stocked with all that you might need. Coming back to an air conditioned apartment was wonderful. Finding treats at our door each morning was an unexpected delight. What a perfect location for seeing historic Charleston ... a few blocks from the Visitors Center and the free trolley and many restaurants and bakeries. One of our favorites was Five Loaves, an easy walk. We hope to return!

My sister and I stayed here while in Charleston for a week. We couldn't have been happier with the location, and the host. Kathleen took such good care of us, spoiled us in fact! There was plenty of room in the apartment to hang out and relax after long days of sight seeing/shopping. So close to everything in Downtown that we never used our rental car while staying in the city. The central air conditioner was a big plus as well since it was so humid during our stay, couldn't have lived without it! The king bed was very comfortbale and cozy. The bathroom was stocked with many miscellaneous items that yuo tend to easily forget. Absolutely loved it! If I ever come back I will stay here again!

This is an excellent location in relation to downtown historic Charleston! You are only 3 blocks from the FREE trolley that will take you all over town! You can visit the Waterfront Park, the Aquarium, the ball park and historic downtown by using the FREE trolley. Be sure to get your FREE mini cone coupon for PAOLO'S gelato. Yummy! You really don't need a car. You are only 4 blocks from the visitors center and this should be your first stop, as you get lots of coupons, brochures and information to plan your days. There are numerous dining opportunities within a 5 block radius. All of them are excellent choices, with a variety of cuisine. The only problem is we couldn't try them all! Kathleen is very willing to give suggestions and directions as well. We so enjoyed our stay and strongly encourage everyone to try beautiful Charleston!

Kathleen is the perfect hostess and this is the perfect historic home stay in lovely Charleston! The apartment is like being at home, only better. All the comforts, while providing the desired historic home look & feel! Don't miss it on your next visit to this fabulous town 'where history lives.'

I stayed in the actual house in the room that Kathleen rents out also. It had a king bed and lots of room in the bedroom. There was a microwave and refrigerator and table to eat off the bedroom. The bathroom had a great tiled shower stall and plenty of room. Kathleen will help you with restaurants and places to visit in Charleston. The location couldn't be better since so close to Visitor's Center and you can get to the Free trolley to get around within a few blocks. Plenty of places to see and to eat at within walking distance also. Charleston is a very nice city and lots of things to see. March is a great time to visit the area and Kathleen will definitely help make your stay enjoyable.
March 6, 2011
I cannot oversell the accommodations or how hospitable the host Kathleen is! I have recommended this place to all of my friends and family. The home is beautiful and the location is perfect; only a couple of block from the visitor center and if you need any restaurant suggestions Kathleen knows the best places you'd never find otherwise. I've never felt more welcome and secure while traveling!

This was ideal for us as my husband and I took a last-minute getaway to Charleston to escape the snow for a couple of days. The apartment was great and had everything we needed. We've always stayed closer to the water but this gave us a chance to discover another part of Charleston. The trolley is a few blocks away and is currently free--very easy to get on and off at all the popular places. It's a very easy walk to Hominy Grill or restaurants/bars/shopping of Upper King. Kathleen is extremely helpful.

My wife and I stayed for 5 days before and 2 days after the Celebrity Mercury cruise from Charleston. Never been to the East coast and this was the most wonderful experience. The vacation/tourist information center is 2-1/2 blocks away and this alone will save $$$ on your vacation. Get 3 day trolly passes. On/Off all over town. The information center is old train station and you'll never see another like it. Kathleen and family the most helpful you'll ever want to meet. You'll add them to your Christmas list-guaranteed. Garden tours and home tours of Charleston begin in March - google it- plantation and harbor tours daily. We did them all- would not have mined missing the crusise. Charleston has that much to offer. Eating was always just around the corner, just ask Kathleen.
