Area Info
Monmouthshire is a Welsh border county with England with more castles than anywhere else in Europe and the Wye Valley is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and celebrating 40 years of this status on 2011. The area has something for everyone whether you prefer outdoor activities, history or shopping. 3 miles from the cottage is the bustling town of Chepstow with pubs, cafes, restaurants and a regular farmers market. Chepstow has a fantastic Racecourse which holds the Welsh Grand National and has regular race meetings. The Royal Forest of Dean with it's numerous mountain bike and walking trails together with Offa's Dyke and the Wye valley walk, two long distance footpaths, are only a short distance away. Other activities nearby, are fishing, fly and course, gliding, sailing, Diving (National Diving Centre at Chepstow) canoeing on the River Wye and of course Golf, the Celtic Manor home to Ryder Cup 2011 plus at least 11 other courses for all abilities and the area has more than enough for children offering entertainment at a very reasonable budget.
As mentioned castles are abundant, too many to name but all within a few miles are the majestic castles of Chepstow, Caldicot and Raglan, plus Tintern Abbey beloved by Wordsworth and the large Roman camp at Caerleon.
Locally there are 4 country pubs all serving food and within walking distance of a mile.
Monmouthshire is also known as the food capital of Wales. The Abergavenny Food Festival held in September is second to none and we are blessed with 2 Michelin star restaurants and a number of celebrity chef restaurants.
And if that is not enough the cities of Cardiff and Bristol Bath and Gloucester are all reached in less than and hour offering all the cultural and shopping experience you would expect. In other words come and enjoy this lovely part of the world you will be most welcome.
