We did not stay at this property as there had been a fire which had left damage. The owner's sister let us stay at her property literally across the same road. Or we were offered a full refund. All dealings with the family were professional and courteous, we were picked up from the train and driven around and shown the area. Juice and tea and coffee had been bought for us. The house was fine and in a nice residential and quiet neighbourhood which we wanted. Logan Suare was a great place to stay. At the end of the visit we were driven around a different area and dropped right by the train to the airport.

Owner's reply:

Hello Sandra,

Thanks for the nice write-up and being understanding with the change of venue. There's hardly any impact to this second floor unit apart from smoke infiltration and a couple of broken windows (Fire Dept.-inflicted) as the fire was confined to a room in the basement and did not spread. The incident was opportune in a way as I'm now able to update the unit to make it better than ever and ready by the end of December. Thanks again for choosing to keep your reservation.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property. The unit provided everything we needed and more. Virgilio was also thoughtful with providing a grocery cart so we could walk to the local store and put our purchases in the cart, thus avoiding our having to pay for bags. The unit was home away from home for us. The location was excellent and we look forward to booking the unit next year.

We needed a place close to the "L", in a safe neighborhood, with a grocery store nearby for our family of four. This place had it all. We felt very safe, had beds for all of us, were 5 blocks from the"L" and a block away from a grocery store. Virgil answered all our questions before coming, took us on a tour of the neighborhood and took us to our first destination that first morning. The only slight inconvenience would be that the unit is upstairs. The unit was clean and we enjoyed our stay.

Excellent location. Great restaurants & bars within easy walking distance. Beautiful public park across the street. Brown Line a couple blocks away provides access all over the city. Our first time in Chicago and we were very impressed by the neighborhood--safe (walkable at night), great local restaurants, coffee shops, and bars.
The property is a second floor walk-up. Two bedrooms, one bath. Clean, comfortable and looks just like the photos on the Home Away site. Note, this is an older property. Charming comes to mind, but it isn't fancy or fussy. Beds and furnishings comfortable, kitchen well stocked. Nice TV. The unit has WIFI and other amenities. Two window air conditioners, one in each bedroom, and ceiling fans provide cooling. We, being 'humidity wimps' were a little uncomfortable during our warm summer stay, but we managed just fine...
The property manager/owner Virgil is awesome, the best part of the deal. He was easily reachable by voice or text and provided us expert guidance about anything we wanted to do anywhere in the city. He has a knowledge of Chicago that astounded us. Thanks so much for all the guidance; it made our trip!

The apartment was clean and nicely decorated. We had all we needed to enjoy a long weekend in Chicago. There is good street parking right at the house. We took a morning walk and enjoyed the comfort of the tree lined neighborhoods. there is a nice city park a block away, Lutz Bakery is right around the corner and a couple blocks over are eateries. The local neighborhood was very comfortable to walk and felt like you belonged. We had a great time staying at this property and would return.
Virgillio was accommodating, we also new he was a phone call away at anytime for recommendations , eateries or events. We went into town to see all the sites using the the L train at Western Station I think 2 blocks up the street. It was very convenient , easy and inexpensive way to see sites.

The Lincoln Square neighborhood is charming and full of character. The tree-lined streets are nice and our family of five walked daily to the El train within a short distance. Aldi's is one Block away and an easy stroll to grab groceries if needed. The house was nice and clean as expected. Virgil was prompt with communication and easy to work with from beginning to end. We wouldn't hesitate to rent from him again. Thanks!

This is a small apartment on the top floor of a brownstone. My family of 4 was comfortable, although fighting for the single bathroom was challenging some days. It was stocked well. The neighborhood is safe. We rented a car but chose to use the subway for 3 days of downtown activities. The Western station is a few blocks away and the 3-day visitor's pass made traveling easier than trying to find parking downtown. The owner is extremely nice & available by phone or text. You will not go wrong by renting this apartment.

We spent a full week in this place, 3 adults and 2 kids. It was a perfect place to be and we enjoyed a lot our vacations there. The place is very quiet, a few blocks away from the train, and then it needs only 30 mn to go downtown. Thus, not a big deal to join the main spots: art institute, aquarium, willis tower, etc...
The area is very convenient, with stores, a nice park and a bunch of restaurants with varied styles.
The appartment itself was large enough for the 5 of us (2 bedrooms +1/2) . It was perfectly clean and fully furnished. Virgilio is very helpful.
I strongly recommend this place.

I have used Home Away from Home on several of my trips and I have yet to be disappointed. This Apt was in the upstairs, rear of this brick building. As I entered through the side gate, it felt like I was walking into another era (in a good way). The Apt is average in size but very functional. Plenty of space for a group of 6 - 4 of them being at least 6' tall. The kitchen is fully equipped and there were PLENTY of linens and towels. The furnishings and decorations were very well put together in such a way that it felt very homey ;). The owner, Virgil, was simply amazing. He offered to show us the city - and did! The cable was out when we arrived (squirrels had eaten part of the cables outside) and he promptly had a tech guy out there to fix it. He answered every question we had and had many suggestions of things to do and places to eat. I would definitely rent this property again.

I came to Chicago for a full month for family bonding and vacation. I decided to reserve this unit because of its location and amenities. The unit's description is accurate no single picture was staged. Fully equipped, maintained and clean. The location is superb, close to the Brown "L" line, Welles Park and Lincoln Square. A short walk for fun, shops and great dinning. A big plus of this apartment is its owner Virgil Tabas. He is a real gentleman, very handy for any need. In an unrelated case, my car was hit at night and it's rear bumper mad pretty much damaged. Virgil recommended an auto body shop which did a very good, fast and great priced repair. I will return to Chicago a few times a year for family. I now know where is my home away from home in Chicago.

Above all to mention is the hospitality of Virglil and Mercedes, which is outstanding. The apt. is nice, spacious and well aquipped. The next metro station is not too far away as well as shops are at walking distance. We spent a good time there and recommend the accomodation for those who want to live with locals, away from tourist crowds.
My Response
Claudia/Hans - Our sincere thanks to you both for being understanding with having to move from our downtown condo and accepting this Lincoln Square unit as a substitute vacation stay. Glad that you enjoyed the area's neighborhood feel and unique attractions while only a short train ride away from Chicago's famed downtown sites.

We enjoyed our weekend stay in this apartment, which was a great value. I would visit again. This is an older brownstone walk-up with original doors and some original windows, but for me this added to the charm. The apartment was clean and had plenty of linens. The couch and the beds were comfortable. I very much enjoyed the decor in the living room and kitchen. Everything was as pictured. There is a large flat-screen TV in the living room. Ceiling fans were in every room, air conditioners in both bedroom windows. This was my first visit to the walkable Lincoln Square neighborhood. We very much enjoyed our strolls to the restaurants and stores and past the large park. The nearest Brown Line station is about 4 blocks away, quite convenient. As the listing states, there is a tavern across the alley -- however there were no issues with noise. Virgil was a great host - he made sure that we were welcomed and checked that we had everything we needed.

I rented this apartment with my brother for his batchelor party weekend. We were just looking for a comfortable place to stay to allow us some downtime from all the festivities. Everything was clean and organized and the location was perfect for us. I parked on the street right across from the apartment- no zone parking in this area! I lived in Chicago for 10 years, and it felt very much like a trip back in time for me- Picture a very typical Chicago-style 2 flat with front and rear units- we were in the 2nd floor rear. The only complaint I can think of was that I had some trouble sleeping in on the Saturday due to some young children in the building next door. But, hey, it was 10am- nothing inappropriate. Virgil and his nephew Phil were very easy to get ahold of through text and email- and were pleasent guys to boot... Rent without hesitation.

We liked the apartment and the area very much. The old apothecary, the Old Scool of Folk Music, the mexican restaurant and other quaints shops in and around Lincoln Square made for a lively experience close by. While downtown was within reasonable reach by the l train. Mercedes and Ronaldo were great hosts, eager to please us and easy to reach.
