Great Place

August 12, 2015

Great place to stay. Close to the train, lots of great restaurants, all within close walking distance. It also had available street parking for our car. The owner meet us when we arrived and answered all of our questions. He also gave us a few recommendations of things to do and places to eat that worked well for us. The was even a Catholic Church right around the corner.

Wonderful place to stay in Chicago. The owners are very friendly. The property is in a great neighborhood close to grocery stores and a fabulous bakery. The apartment has every detail thought of - the kitchen is fully stocked with many appliances, and the furnishings are beautiful. Plenty of space for eating and relaxing, and very clean. We really enjoyed our stay here and hope to come back!

The property was everything that we were looking for: enough rooms and space at a convenient location for a family reunion.
There was only one minor problem, which was with the WiFi, provided by Camcast. Since we have some knowledge about Camcast, we were confident that the problem did not lie with Mr Tavas, and it turned out that it did not. Mr Tavas worked diligently in the middle of the Christmas holidays to get the problem sorted out. As a result, we were not inconvenienced in the least, and we could not be more pleased.
Everything was as described --- in words, as well as in pictures. I would recommend this property without hesitation to anybody; and, when I visit my daughter the next time, I hope that it will be available for us!
Thank you, Mr Tavas, and we wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year!

We visited Chcago from St. Louis. There were seven of us...four adults, three children (6, 6, and 3), and two grandparents. We were able to find the place easily using Maps and street parking was available. There are lots of amenities in walking distance. The location made our stay "easy" even with kids!
My dad is a elbow knee amputee so I'll include some details on accessibility. Virgil was so kind to install a hand-held shower head and a grab bar in the tub shower for him! There are four steps into the unit that were a little difficult for him but manageable. Bedrooms were a good size, providing him plenty of room to don/doff his prosthesis.
The place was charming and had everything we needed for making meals. There are two TVs...really great for the kid vs adult preferences! There are a/c units which we needed a bit in June. We were very comfortable.
Virgil was very helpful, including answering texts during our stay about restaurants, etc. Communication was prompt from the reservation process through our stay.
We highly recommend staying here. Lincoln park is a great residential area and a nice L ride into the city. The kids liked learning about "city living." Please book this rental!

This property was just what we were looking for to accommodate five adult men for a "Brother's Week" in Chicago. Plenty of room, kitchen had everything we needed, public transportation nearby and the neighborhood was safe and relatively quiet. The only issues (and they were rather insignificant) was the internet would kick us off occasionally and the back yard could use a little TLC. Overall we would recommend this property for groups or families looking to spend some time in Chicago at an affordable price and in clean and comfortable conditions.

We were looking for a place for 5 (2 adults and 3 children). We had a wonderful time in Virgil´s Appartement. Everything was clean and we found everything we needed. Virgil himself is simply the best! He helped us so much and made sure that we had a pleasent stay. If we come back to Chicago we would choose Virgil´s Appartement again.

Our 7-member church staff stayed here for a 3-day retreat. Pictures and descriptions match reality. We were pleasantly surprised with the many dining options and el stop within easy walking distance, and the quiet residential neighborhood with ample street parking. We enjoyed the immediate area, and the hassle-free access to downtown. The hosts were very pleasant, helpful and and flexible without being intrusive in any way. It was a great lodging option that met our needs and budget very well.
If you're looking for new construction, or ultra-modern accommodations, this is not your best option. The building and decor are... unique. Quirky, even. (We spent a few minutes sorting out the electrical system, finally noting that 3 of the room A/C units throughout the building were wired to the same circuit... so we used only 2 of them at a time to keep from tripping the breaker. Still, even on a hot week, temps inside remained comfortably cool) We realized these were not flaws so much as typical features of an older brownstone/row house in this mature neighborhood. In the kitchen, all the necessities (utensils, dishes, spices...coffee!) and appliances were covered, as long as you don't need stainless and granite... The "character" of the house quickly grew on us and became a positive for our stay.
Despite the great location, we had planned to spend a lot of time together in the house. While rooms were not large, there were lots of them, with plenty of furniture and bedding. We got a bit creative with air mattresses, but our mostly-unrelated group felt like we had plenty of space without getting in each other's way between our planned "sessions." We also enjoyed the bonus of the small front porch seating area, and back yard patio space with charcoal grill (our host provided all the needed supplies!) as places to gather or separate as needed. An extended family group would likely find the same balance of togetherness and escape here.
Thank you, Virgil, for a great stay!

The apartment was exactly as portrayed. It was very roomy, and we appreciated having both the main living room and the little lounge room with a TV in the back. The four bedrooms were just what we needed for our family coming for a wedding celebration.
It was a great location, near fun restaurants and Lincoln Square. The El Brown Line Western stop is just a few blocks away, and the buses are also close.
Virgil was right there to let us in when we arrived. He showed us around and offered advice on things going on in town and nearby restaurants and bakeries.

Our family met in Chicago to visit our son & daughter-in-law. They live in Lincoln Square, so it was great being so close for meals together & hanging out. The property is old, but quite charming. Our biggest problem was the front steps to the porch. They are in need of replacing & a handrail! Virgil is very nice & provided us with great local information. We really enjoyed staying at his place! We especially enjoyed seeing Million Dollar Quartet at the Apollo Theatre! (Our son just happens to be in it!!!)

My colleagues and I had a wonderful time here. It was a perfect home away from home on a business trip: comfortable, clean, spacious and well-appointed, in a great neighborhood, close to some excellent restaurants (Fork, Mash and MIku Sushi were some favorites). I especially enjoyed the private suite in the back of the house, with a bedroom, bathroom and another living area. The owner was very reachable and easy to deal with. We would definitely stay here again.

Our family of five was very comfortable and had more than enough space in this property to relax, play (young children), hangout, and eat in between our many Chicago sight-seeing adventures. Each of our kids had their own room to sleep, which was great. Our teenager even had his own bathroom and lounge area to himself -- bonus! Every amenity we needed was here. There were plenty of linens, towels, a fully-stocked kitchen, you name it.
We drove the mini-van from out-of-state and found plenty of street parking in front of the unit. We enjoyed great restaurants (The Bad Apple, Garcia's, Nano Sushi), a diner (Jeri's) and even cute shops in Lincoln Square. My husband said he had the best taco of his life just down the street (on Montrose) next to the gas station (really!). I felt safe walking our dog around the neighborhood, even late in the evening. The park down the street was a bonus for the dog. The kids would have enjoyed the playground there too if we had stayed a little longer.
Virgil, the property owner, was very responsive to our many questions before/during the booking process, and was also very helpful with restaurant suggestions, etc. upon our arrival. He checked in to make sure all was going well with our stay. After checking out, he refunded our damage deposit within hours.
We would definitely recommend this property to friends and family!
One helpful tip: Although it's a relatively quiet street, if you are a light sleeper like me, or not used to sharing a building with other units above and/or below you, you might want to bring earplugs so you don't hear people coming and going or the occasional siren... just in case. :-)

I live in the suburb area of Chicago and had family from UK and from Kansas City staying at this house, no complaints at all. The first step in the home, we felt very welcomed and comfortable right away. We had a total of 8 people and there was plenty of room for everyone. It is close enough to the train to walk, which was very convenient for us to get to the city. There were restaurants and bars close enough to walk to the house, nice patio in the front and sitting area in the back. The kitchen was also stocked with coffee and sugar, which was a big bonus for the coffee drinkers. I would highly recommend this place for someone that wants to visit Chicago. I also left a pair of diamond earrings behind and was very relieved when the owner of the house was able to find them and mail them back! Thanks!!

What a find! Virgil and his family were the most gracious of hosts providing our group of 7 a perfect place to stay for an out-of-town wedding. Skip the hotel and book this property! Four separate bedrooms and two full bathrooms made this space ideal for our group. Spacious kitchen/dining/living areas! The location couldn't have been more ideal. Right off the Western stop of the Brown line and a short walk from Lincoln Square, we had EVERYTHING in walking distance. Groceries, Restaurants, Bars, etc! Of course we timed this visit just perfectly to coincide with the neighborhood's Ribfest! (Basically a street fair with delicious ribs and barbecue from neighboring restaurants, live music, children, dogs, families) I would highly recommend staying at Virgil's property. It has the charm of an authentic Chicago home, free WiFi, and a more than ample supply of linens and towels. It was so nice to have a "home base" that was in the midst of everything, rather than a stuffy hotel room downtown. Thanks Virgil and family!
My Response
And a BIG THANK YOU to you personally, Katie, for booking the property without hesitation (our very first visitors!)..... and to your friends as well for showing appreciation not just for the place but the fun things that go on in our neighborhood. You guys were great and left the place clean to boot. We look forward to your next visit!

This property worked out perfectly for us. My 10-yr-old son, my 83-yr-old mother and myself were all comfortable, both in the house and in the neighborhood overall. We walked to the El only a few blocks away to head downtown one day, drove to the suburbs and easily found street parking each evening when we returned (our minivan could not fit into the garage, though--it is really only suitable for a small car). We even played in the park around the corner (with the soccer ball we found in the apartment). We ate next door the first night and the food was good. The grocery store next door is only okay, but the one a mile away was fine. Didn't get a chance to try the bakery, but I heard it was excellent. We appreciated the artistic touches in the decorating and used the piano a few times. The kitchen was well-equipped and clean (although we did need to wash a few of the pots and pans before use); there were more than enough towels and pillows; Virgil really missed nothing important. Phil was helpful and a pleasant "receptionist" upon our arrival and quickly addressed our needs. And Virgil was a great host as well. I would definitely stay in this property again and recommend it for others, especially families or anyone who needs to or wants to spend time both in the city and drive outside the city as well.
My Response
Thanks for your feedback, Emily. Definitely appreciate your comments here and in our previous conversation, coming from vacation rental connoisseurs like yourself and your mom. On the pots and pans, our regular cleaning person was "unfortunately" on vacation but now back and will ensure that situation does not repeat. Glad to hear that you had an enjoyable experience at the property overall and your son had a lot of fun in the park. You may have a future pro athlete there! Looking forward to your next visit.

My friends and I stayed here for 3 nights July 10 to July 13. This place is very charming, spacious, and relatively quiet. We had plenty of room for the 3 of us. The backyard and front porch are great places to just hang out and relax. The house resides on a beautiful tree lined street with very little traffic. The people in the area are very friendly, and there are lots of neat little restaurants and bars within comfortable walking distance. We even walked to Wrigley Field, which I think is just less than 2 miles away. It is easy to flag down a taxi or just walk a few blocks to the train station for getting around the city. I would definitely stay here again!
My Response
Jeff, thanks to you and your friends for staying with us. So glad to hear that you enjoyed the place and the neighborhood. That trek to Wrigley Field is a nice walk, and something that many neighbors do to watch our Cubbies play - such lovable losers! The Wrigley Filed you saw may not be the same lone iconic old-style baseball park in the country on your next visit, with all the plans to modernize it.

Comfortable, vintage feel. Modern beds and decorative bedding. 4BR, 2 Baths plus pull-out sofa. Excellent Lincoln Square location. Close to EL. Virgil is an excellent host and was able to trouble-shoot when we had concerns. The only negative was not having the WiFi code in plain sight. This Home Away from Home more than met our needs.

Thanks Virgil and Phil for a great stay. The owners were extremely accommodating and flexible. Our arrival time changed at the last minute and a later arrival time was no issues at all. We were greeted at the house and given a complete tour of the property....I've rented a number of homes and this was the first home tour. It was a nice touch. We were provided with a number of suggestions of things to do and places to eat. Another first was we were provided with the cell phone number of the owner and another family member if we needed anything or had questions. The house was a nice 4 bedroom home. Plenty of room and extremely clean. Well equipped with the basic essentials...pots, pans, coffee maker and even some spices and oil to help with the cooking. Location was great. Plenty of things within walking distance. Took in a Cubs game and was approx 2 mile walk. Nice walk and a great way to see the city. Took a cab back for $15. Overall a great stay and will definitely rent this home again. Thanks again.
My Response
Brett, thanks for the kind words and feedback on what works for visitors such as yourselves so we can continually improve on our service. The least we can do is be as accessible as can be to address any issue that comes up so visitors can concentrate on just having a fun stay in Chicago.

We were in Chicago for a week for a family wedding. This house was a great place for 8 adults and 2 small children to gather from all over the country to share time together and laughs. There was more than enough room for all of us and we were even able to have the bride and groom come and have dinner with us the night we got in. The accomodations are awesome, with access even to the backyard and a firepit which we used a few times on chilly nights while we sat around talking about old times and just enjoying our time together. Location is excellent. Aldi Grocery store accross the street, family Dollar on the other side, and walking distance to many restaurants and night life. Virgil and Phil could not have been more helpful. They were available for anything we needed. I highly reccommend this house... Stay here.... you will not be disappointed!!!!

Had some of my family stay here while in town for my wedding. The apartment was clean and well appointed. There was plenty of room for two families with a couple of children.

Our family was in Chicago to attend our daughter's swearing-in ceremony. We had 7 adults stay comfortably in Virgil's property. Virgil was very accommodating and met us for an early check-in, and although we are very familiar with the Lincoln Square neighborhood, he wanted to be sure we were aware of all the local restaurants and places of interest. The property was clean and quiet, and there were plenty of kitchen pots and pans, dishes and utensils for us to use for meals eaten in. We did utilize the outdoor space and grilled out one evening. So glad we found this property and plan to use it again on one of our family visits!

Apartment is exactly as described and pictured. Plenty of space for our group of six, and lots to do in the neighborhood! Apartment is equipped with every appliance and utensil you could possibly need, and kitchen is quite large. Owner is very helpful, communicative and flexible. Would definitely return to this Lincoln Square find.
