Description of the Chicago vacation apartment rental
This vacation property is in a large vintage brownstone on a quiet, tree-lined street in Buena Park, a historic area in the southeast corner of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. The place is a little over a mile walk to the beach, less than a mile from Wrigley Field and a 15-minute drive to downtown Chicago via Lake Shore Drive. Shopping is two blocks away and public transportation (both train and buses) are also nearby.

Area Information
Buena Park is a laid-back "hidden gem" near the lake with many long-time residents in some of the city's architectural masterpieces. Uptown has a reputation for being a gentrifying and emergent, but still gritty neighborhood, mainly due to it being the most diverse of Chicago's neighborhoods - racially, socially, politically and economically. Buena Park boasts of million dollar graystones just blocks from retail outlets where you could hear one of 87 languages spoken by resident shoppers. Uptown today is an amalgam of cultures from all over the world juxtaposed over its own unique American story. Once an area of great opulence and home to a nationally renowned entertainment district that's the envy of Manhattan at the turn of the century, Uptown suffered greatly following the stock crash of 1929. As the wealthy fled the area in subsequent years, many buildings transitioned to cheap housing and attracted waves of immigrants from all over the world - Africans, Latinos, Swedes and Vietnamese being prominent ones. Remnants of past Art Deco magnificence are still visible on the facade of its buildings. Green Mill, a famous jazz hangout for the Mob and big-name celebrities (Sinatra was a regular) still thrives, along with acclaimed venues like the Aragon Ballroom and the Uptown Theater.

At last, though, Uptown is reaping the rewards of its diversity. Years of co-existence among disparate cultures created a colorful and vibrant community that's tolerant but proud, highlighted by the amazing Southeast Asian pocket on Argyle Street. The beauty of Uptown is the amazing array of different vibes visitors can experience just walking from block-to-block - from its gentrified pockets to unique shops and restaurants of various international themes. Andersonville, on the northern tip of Uptown, has not experienced the highs or the lows of central Uptown, and strikes a completely different feel. Originally a destination for Swedish immigrants, whose influence can be seen in a few restaurants and bars, it became a hub for Chicago's GLBT community. The stylish boutiques and inviting restaurants have made it a great place for people of all backgrounds to live, and a laid-back destination for shopping or entertainment.

A little over a mile east is Montrose Park which abuts Lake Michigan. The park hosts soccer, volleyball and frisbee tournaments as well as other sporting events for both local and foreign players, particularly from Latin America and Europe. There are all types of outdoor activities to enjoy - jogging, biking, boating, tennis, golf, rollerblading, kiting and fishing in a safe and festive environment.

The lake takes about 15-20 minutes to walk from the property, and it's about the same to Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. There are great neighborhoods to shop and dine at within a mile to mile-and-a-half radius of the place, Lakeview, Andersonville and Lincoln Square being ones that are a treat for any visitor. As an added convenience, vacationers can leave their car in the private parking area provided behind the building and rent a Divvy bike from a station a block away, to access said attractions. The Red LIne train station 1/2 mile away gets you downtown in 15-20 minutes.

In terms of shopping for food and supplies, Jewel Supermarket and Target are each two blocks away from the property. Good restaurants of various types and ethnic flavors also abound at moderate prices.

There are two banks a block away - Chase and PNC - for those needing to do any financial transaction while vacationing.

Great Place, Excellent Host

July 11, 2016

We visited during 4th of July week and had an amazing time. The apartment accommodations were very comfortable even though there were 7 of us for most of the week (grandparents, parents, and 3 children). We enjoyed exploring the neighborhood and other areas of Chicago without needing to drive anywhere. Virgil was very friendly and provided us with some extra time that became necessary when our train arrival and departure times were changed by Amtrak. Our children (ages 10, 8, and 2) loved Montrose Beach, only a 20-minute walk away. It was also easy to walk to the Red Line station and explore other areas of Chicago, and we enjoyed spending time at Navy Pier, Ohio St. Beach, and the River Walk, among other places.

Three of us stayed in the flat for a week on our first visit to Chicago and we loved it. Such a spacious place, with a nice vintage feel to it! Lovely lounge, good sized bathroom and a good kitchen too. We'd definitely recommend the place.
My Response
Gerald, happy to hear that my place contributed to what sound like a great first-time experience in Chicago for yourself and your friends from England!

Each year 6-8 of us travel to a different city to watch some baseball and have a good time. Typically we book hotels, but after this year, we won't do that again. This apartment worked out great for us. About a mile from Wrigley, lots of room, nice area of town, and clean. Virgil was a great host and shared ideas for nearby restaurants and bars, and answered any questions we had. We would definitely choose this again.
My Response
Looking forward to your next visit, Tom! It'd be a madhouse around Wrigley if the Cubs continue on the tear they've been in the second half of the season.

We were thrilled to stay in a place just a few doors away from our son. The weather was perfect and we were able to sleep comfortably with the windows open. The neighborhood is incredibly quiet! There were 6 of us and we all slept well. Thanks for having coffee available Virgil and for always being a text away for questions. We enjoyed our stay.
My Response
Glynis, would love the opportunity to have everyone back the next time your son is due for another visit! You have a wonderful family.

Virgil was so easy to work with, and answered my emailed questions very quickly. We drove from a long distance , so we were not sure of our arrival time and he was very willing to work with us. He met us there and was so kind and enthusiastic. Showed us all around the beautiful apartment and had a print out of all the information we would need. Excellent place to stay, my family really enjoyed it there. Thank you Virgil, hope to see you again sometime!
My Response
Thanks for the kind words, Linda! I look forward to hosting you family again.

The apartment was perfect for our stay! It was very clean and well maintained. The 6 of us fit comfortably and we all slept soundly :) The kitchen is equipped with all the appliances, cookware, and staples like coffee, spices, cooking oil, etc (very much appreciated!). It is a roomy apartment with lots of storage and great natural daylight.
It is located about 2 - 3 blocks from the Red Line, which in turn is about a 20 - 30 minute train ride to downtown. The neighborhood is safe and walkable, with Super Target nearby for all those forgotten items!
Virgil was very helpful and had many suggestions regarding local sights, events, and shops.
My only regret is not having enough time to hang out on the private balcony - we were just too busy sightseeing (there is soooo much to see and do)!
My Response
It was such a pleasure hosting an architect and her family who wanted to not just experience the typical tourist "must-sees" but also appreciate the city's diverse building structures and cultures. You probably didn't notice, but I learned so much myself chatting with you.

We came to Chicago to celebrate my Sons 21st birthday with Family & Friends by going to watch The Cubs game. We parked at the house and walked right down Sheridan which turns into Sheffield right at The Bleacher seats entrance. Had a great time at the game and walked right back to the house afterward. On the way back we stopped at a really fun Cubs bar on the way and had a great time. We ordered pizza when we got back and it was delivered hot and delicious right to our front door. We had a great time, the house was very comfortable as described and perfect for our accommodations. Would definitely stay here again.
My Response
Ron, glad your family and friends got to celebrate your son's birthday at my place. I've received many inquiries from folks wanting close proximity to Wrigley Field for its Cubs games and concerts held there. Finding parking in Wrigleyville at modest cost can be challenging!
