WILDLIFE CALENDAR:

January and February are typically cold and blustery. The refuge’s moist-soil management units usually host a wide variety of wintering waterfowl, including
large numbers of snow geese.

By March the migratory waterfowl begin to depart for their northern
breeding grounds. March 15, the southern end of the island, known as the “Hook,” is closed to all public use to conserve habitat for the threatened piping plover and other beach nesters.

A diversity of migratory shorebirds and songbirds arrive on the refuge in April and May. Visitors are encouraged to celebrate Earth Day with refuge staff in mid-April and the refuge hosts an annual International Migratory Bird Celebration
during Mother’s Day Weekend.

June marks the beginning of the high tourist season as people migrate to the seashore for family vacations. Ticks and tick borne disease require visitors to check for unwanted “hitchhikers” after exploring the refuge’s many hiking and biking trails. The first week of June is National Fishing Week.

Many visitors flock to the refuge on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July for the annual pony penning activities. Many species of wading birds, gulls, and terns can be found throughout the refuge.

In August, mole crabs, ghost crabs and
coquina clams frequent the seashore and herons and egrets line the ditches along Beach Road.

From mid-
September to mid-October a number of hawks and falcons migrate through Assateague Island. The first migratory waterfowl arrive in September; however, the peak waterfowl migration usually occurs in November and December.

National Wildlife Refuge Week is celebrated Columbus Day Observed weekend in October. Additionally, visitors can tour the northern portion of the refuge during Thanksgiving as part of the annual Waterfowl Week Celebration.

Each and every season at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge has its on unique beauty and wildlife. Come and enjoy them all!

Incredible home for a vacation

June 6, 2016

We spent Memorial day weekend in this property. We were a group of 10 friends (5 couples) and this home was so comfortable and spacious that we all had plenty of space and didn't feel "on top of each other. The views from all the bedrooms and covered patio were fenomenal. The kitchen is very well built and was designed with an eye for having more than one "chef" around. We are definetely looking forward to spend more time in this property in the future.

2nd stay at Spinnaker Waterfront and it’s even better than the last time. We stayed with 3 other retired  couples this time and enjoyed having our own bedrooms and bathrooms. One chilly and rainy day we couldn’t go fishing but enjoyed the fireplace and appreciated the nice dry firewood the owners supplied. Really enjoyed seeing the Chincoteague wild ponies again, and this time we did get to the Wallops NASA base.   We are planning on bringing our grandchildren for a week next summer. There are so many free activities that we can enjoy with them from catching crabs and swimming off the dock,  surf fishing on Assateague, and even climbing the light house.  Plus the 2 visitor centers on Assateague and Wallops can keep them busy if weather doesn’t let us enjoy the National Seashore which is my favorite beach. Especially enjoyed lots of take-out seafood, and the savings vs eating in restaurants. But cooked lots of great breakfasts in the wonderful kitchen that was exceptionally well stocked with everything from paper products to spices and every pot and pan you can imagine including a large crock pot for our gang!

Great Off Season Rates! Highlights were catching crabs on the dock with my kids (owner supplied nice traps), Seeing the wild ponies, Everyone had their own bedroom, Spacious great room for all of us to gather, Fantastic views from most rooms and all decks, Lots of balconies and decks, Fully stocked kitchen, and all amenities we could want and the most relaxing Screen Porch anywhere. Owner provided everything from beach chairs and boogie boards so easy to pack. Best was all the up to date Activities and Events that the we were kept updated on -- sometimes there are rocket launches on Wallops Island, as well as all of the Assateague Island National Seashore and the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge. There is a nice fireplace so I'll keep this in mind for one of the kids holidays off from school.

Pat Hutchings

Owner's reply:

Thank you for your stay. Yes the fireplace is great from Fall through Spring, but there's heat in all the rooms so it's only for enjoyment. We would love to have you stay for one of the Holidays. Chincoteague has lots of activities such as Thanksgiving Wildfowl Festival, ChincoteagueChristmas and the famous HorseShoe Drop on New Years Eve with Polar Pony Plunge on January 1. Death by Chocolate is fun over Valentine's Weekend, and Spring Break and Easter are popular with lots of activities.

I had the most wonderful, relaxing vacation staying at Spinnaker. Pat was great to book with and answered all my questions as well as providing helpful information and events taking place during our stay. We went biking and kayaking and were able to store our bikes and kayaks in a special locked area provided for us. Spinnaker was immaculate and had everything we needed, and especially appreciated the comfortable beds. We enjoyed sitting on the screened porch. We also enjoyed the downtown shops and great seafood restaurants. We even brought fresh seafood back to eat on the porch. There were amazing views from all the rooms. Each bedroom had its own bathroom, and we even enjoyed the fireplace one evening. We appreciated that they provided us with some fire wood. I'm looking forward to going back to Chincoteague and staying at Spinnaker!

Pat Hutchings

Owner's reply:

Thank you for making your next reservation for your Fall 2015 visit. So glad that you enjoyed the kayaking in the area around Spinnaker Waterfront and especially liked the new Guest Locked storage area for your bikes and kayaks.
You were great guests and welcome back anytime.

The Spinnaker Waterfront Vacation Home is nicely situated right on a small waterway that opens into the larger Assateague Canal with a beautiful Eastern view of the water. The house is absolutely beautiful and extremely comfortable. With a screened porch that lets you enjoy the outdoors without the bugs to a nice sunroom, you can enjoy your coffee in the mornings with lots of light and sense of openess. The really nice finishing touch to the place was the welcome gifts of wine, local gourmet candy, and a gift card to the Island Creamery. All you need to add is the main course! We highly recommend the Spinnaker!

Lovely accommodations for my family on a quiet street with a tranquil waterfront view. The National Seashore and Park were worthy of a week long pass. We rented bikes and my grandson learned how to ride his two wheeler in a safe neighborhood.

If you love wildlife and want to see them in their natural habitat, then Chincoteague Island is the place for you. We have had two wonderful stays there at Spinnaker House, the well-loved home of Pat and Harmon who share their warmth and comfortable "home away from home" with anyone wanting a magical time at Chincoteague. Spinnaker has five bedrooms and four bathrooms and a beautiful living room complete with fireplace overlooking one of the canals. We enjoyed a week of family reunion as well as individual quiet. Our days were spent at the refuge and in the evenings and mornings, we shared dinners and breakfasts at Spinnaker. The home is comfortable and homey, making it easy to relax and enjoy each other. The canal on one side and marsh on the other are home to water birds including great blue herons, mergansers, mallards, egrets and many more. And of course, there is the magic of the Chincoteague Wildlife refuge only minutes away. Spinnaker is the perfect place to stay, but book it before your wished-for vacation week is taken!!

This was a beautiful house in a beautiful location. Perfect. The house offers everything you would need for a fabulous vacation. Chincoteaque has lots to do if you like biking, crabbing, fishing, boating, and have an appreciation for nature. The food was good and the people that worked in the town were very nice and hard working. We spent most of our time enjoying the house and just hanging out. The kids never complained of being bored and didn't miss their video games! We played Horse-opoly instead and ate smores on the deck!! We are going back next year!

Pat Hutchings

Owner's reply:

We'll be delighted to have you back at The PonyIsland House for the same August week next year ..... and very smart to book a year in advance : )
It's always so nice to hear how happy guests are to discover a 'little piece of Paradise' -- the Chincoteague Assateague areas are truly special. And so happy to hear from you how much your son enjoyed catching the crabs from our dock!

Amazing Vacation Getaway

June 29, 2014

My husband and I along with our 3 young adult sons enjoyed an amazing vacation getaway this past week at Spinnaker. The home is so beautiful and the views from everywhere are breathtaking. We often had our morning coffee and breakfast on the lovely screened-in porch or sometimes the two of us stole away on the private balcony off of the master bedroom. We brought some lawn games along on the trip and had fun playing croquet, bocce, and ladder ball. We also rented two double kayaks for the week from Southeast Expeditions and the cost included drop off and pick up right at Spinnaker! Another day we rented a boat from East Side Rentals & Marina and enjoyed fishing, swimming, and the beautiful wild life all around. We brought our bikes along and enjoyed riding in the neighborhood as well as at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. We had great weather and enjoyed the beautiful beaches of the Assateague Island National Seashore. We loved grilling at the house each night, enjoying the beautiful deck and views -- our one night out included dinner at Bill's...delicious....and we were happy we made reservations! Another night out included amazing ice cream at the Island Creamery. Pat was so kind and helpful and had Mrs. B on hand to help if we needed anything while on the island. We would highly recommend this beautiful vacation retreat. Thanks for everything, Pat, and especially for making your home so welcoming!

Wonderful experience at the Spinnaker!

July 22, 2013

My family and I had a wonderful vacation staying at the Spinnaker! We stayed from June 29 to July 6. The house was perfect for our group of two families which included our kids ranging from age 1 up to 18 years old. The layout of the house is incredible and allows everyone to have their own space if they want or all hang out together. I can be very OCD about cleanliness and I can say I felt extremely comfortable in this house. It was clean and well kept. We fished a little bit off the dock but didn't catch anything. We did get to eat crabs we caught off the dock. That was a neat experience, especially since none of us had ever done it before. One of our favorite things was renting 2 kayaks for a day and kayaking in the canal. We also enjoyed spending our evenings and nights on the screened in porch. It was really peaceful sitting outside so close to the water. The Hutchings are an amazing couple to rent from... very easy to contact through the entire process and genuinely concerned with my family and me enjoying our stay. It was our first time visiting Chincoteague; therefore, all of Pat's recommendations and information about the area was greatly appreciated! We also received our deposit back extremely fast and without any problems. We wouldn't hesitate to rent the Spinnaker again if we have the opportunity! Thank you for such an extraordinary experience!!!

Recently spent a four day mini getaway at Spinnaker and could not have expected a more delightful experience. Everything about Spinnaker was exactly as advertised: very comfortable accommodations for all of us (seven adults); very clean and well-appointed; everything clearly labeled and nothing wanting; ideal waterfront setting with great vistas and easy access to everything (crabbing from the bulkhead / a short jaunt to the national seashore for beach time or surf fishing / ample fishing charters and wildlife cruises / several delightful dining spots for fresh local seafood / or just relaxing on Spinnaker's waterfront deck with a good read). At a little more than $100 per night per couple, you would be hard-pressed to find a better value. And dealing with the owner, Pat Hutchings, proved an enjoyable, pain-free experience. We're already discussing a return trip to Spinnaker!

Kicked off our Summer with a Memorial Day weekend retreat to this well-appointed home. After a long day in the car, immediately felt right at home, and that was before we discovered our personal welcome package waiting in the dining room! This home was EXACTLY as advertised, and every detail/question/concern was addressed from the time of reservation until the end of our stay. The weather was a little cool, as it has been all Spring this year, so the beach was a little less inviting...but no matter....our family had a beautiful deck with a private dock to hang out on! Our kids enjoyed netting baby jellies, shrimp, and any other critters they could find right from the dock...an unexpected surprise. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Spinnaker and will definitely be back...there was immediate talk of making this an annual ritual! Thanks Pat!!

My family and I just returned from a stay at the Spinnaker, just yesterday. We all had such an incredible time! The house is in a great location. It has such character, with all the comforts of home. Clean, tidy and organized. The things you hope for when renting a home. Within the home is a large fireplace which we used every night. Nine of us total, and plenty of room. Modern amenities, comfortable spaces, a view that you will find yourself gazing. I will recommend this house to anyone. Thanks Pat!

Pat Hutchings

Owner's reply:

Thanks Shane,
Sorry you had to leave before the Spring Pony Round-up as I'm sure the kids would have enjoyed it.
There's another in the fall.

Glad you had a great time -- Chincoteague in the Spring can be delightful!

Nothing was lacking in the kitchen to prepare our feast and clean up was complete in no time with an excellent dishwasher and deep sink. We were lucky to have great weather so we could relax on both spacious decks. Plenty of comfortable beds and no shortage of sumptuous bathrooms and living and dining areas made Spinnaker remarkable. It was wonderful!

My husband and I rented the Spinnaker to celebrate a wedding anniversary. We could not have been happier. The home was lovely with spectacular water views from the many windows and decks. We were initially concerned that the home would be too big for the two of us; however, we felt that the layout accommodated two people extremely well. The lower deck was amazing for relaxing in the adirondack chairs and a romantic candlelight waterfront dinner under beautiful evening stars. The master suite bathroom with a shower for two and romantic two person jacuzzi was luxurious--just like in your own private resort. The hardest decision was where to enjoy our morning coffee--from the balcony watching the sunrise over Assateague or the screened in porch. Usually the sun deck won out. Spinnaker is very well located in a quiet private community surrounded by lots of pine trees and a short ride to the beach, restaurants, shops and a delicious homemade ice cream parlor. The owners were a delight to deal with and provided lots of information on local activities. This home is perfect for a romantic getaway--as the saying goes, "Virginia is for Lovers." We hope to come back next time with our canoe!

Pat Hutchings

Owner's reply:

Spinnaker was actually designed as a retirement home for the 2 of us, so we're always delighted when couples choose to spend their Honeymoon, Anniversary, or just a Romantic Weekend!

Thank you for your kind comments ..... most which are deserved by the architect Richard Vesely who did the original design and also our new addition!

Wishing you many more wonderful Anniversaries ...... and please don't forget that we offer 10% savings to previous guests.

DC, Charlottesville, and Greensboro families came together to explore an area known to us only by reputation but one that none of us had visited. The house was just right for our needs. We enjoyed exploring its nooks and crannies and the five year old in the group loved the spaces it afforded for treasure hunts and hide and seek. The beach and wildlife areas are especially nice. Wonderful time and we thank you.

Just the Two of Us!

We had a lovely time -- just the two of us, retreating for a long weekend from a frantic life. What a lovely place, and lovely views. I especially appreciated the thought that has gone into many of the features of Spinnaker -- the lighting, the la belong of the switches, the clever pass throughs from the kitchen and the decorating.

The buffethead ducks in the canal were fun to watch!

Thanks for sharing your wonderful home.

We absolutely loved the new bathrooms!!
They look as if they were always there.  The addition enhanced so many aspects of this already beautiful & tranquil retreat.  We can't imagine now how we rinsed off 4 sandy kids everyday before the outdoor shower.  The boys fished and crabbed all week long.  We made use of the new deck ... it was my husbands favorite!
Thank you for all of the upgrades -- they were thoughtful as they made our stay so much easier and convenient.  The comfort here cannot be outdone.
Thanks Again

Dear Pat,
we had a wonderful RESTFUL VISIT at your marvelous house. The children adored the crabs (as did visitors fro the UK) - there is nothing like catching your own supper .....
The beach and reserve in general are stunning and loved the seafood! E is the shrimp queen of VA and M was more into 'chippies'!
Thank you so much, we certainly to come again and check out the other seasons!
We have donated a couple of books and MISTY.
