Description of the Cloudland vacation cabin rental
The view of pastoral Shinbone Valley from deep in the woods of the East Brow of Lookout Mountain is stunning. Here is your opportunity to experience the ambience of a true old-timey log cabin in a charming, fairy tale setting.

This completely unique cabin sleeps five adults plus plenty more kids. That old fashioned charm has been incorporated with wood-worked and hand carved details by local artists and artisans at every turn. The adorable factor is through the roof! You will be transported back in time without sacrificing any of the modern conveniences of central heat/AC, modern full bath, complete kitchen (the perfect spot to create and serve a full holiday meal!) .
Area Information
Lookout Mountain is actually a ridge stretching in the southern Appalachians from Gadsden, AL to Chattanooga, TN. You can travel the Parkway all along the top. To get to the cabin, you will travel through a cattle ranch on the ridge and drop down the east side.

The East Brow is the Sunrise and Moonrise side of Lookout Mountain! Usually shrouded in clouds, especially in the early morning, the view of Shinbone Valley below to the east is stunning.

The area boasts every kind of fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding sport, as well as the only actual snow skiing (!) in Georgia or Alabama ( see Mentone, AL for info.)

The arts community is very active. Antiquing and terrific restaurants are in Mentone, which is only about 20 minutes from the cabin. Art and craft festivals occur most weekends in Mentone, featuring local craftsmen, artists and artisans (you may meet the folks who built Acorn Ledge Lodge, local artists who created and executed the turkey chandelier and other unique details of the cabin.)

Peaceful and Relaxing

June 27, 2016

The cabin was adorable and provided plenty of room for the three of us to have a wonderful sister's get-away week. The pictures are very accurate - - it is decorated beautifully, the beds are very comfortable, the kitchen is extremely well and nicely equipped, there are games to play, books to read, plenty of small quilts and throws to wrap up in, a washer and dryer, hair dryer, (I think she even has a curling iron), a basket of travel shampoos, cream rinses, creams, etc., baby gates, highchair, etc. There's a dining table between the kitchen and living area, but we loved sitting out on the porch overlooking the valley below and usually ate dinner at the second table out there, which opens up to seat six. We played games out there and I even slept out there one night on the pull-out couch. The guest bedroom is downstairs and my sisters loved the extra-long twin beds and cool temperature. The cabin has central heat and air and so the few days it got warm in the late afternoon, inside was perfect. Our host was a dream and provided excellent communication throughout the entire process including all details needed to locate the cabin, activities, restaurants, and just made sure we were all prepared to have a wonderful time. My Gordon setter had the time of his life and enjoyed hiking around the cabin and Cloudland Canyon State Park, as well as the cool mornings and evenings in the mountains. Overall this is just a peaceful retreat. There are neighbors on both sides, but one home is empty and the other neighbors were very quiet and nice and made us feel a bit more secure knowing that we weren’t totally secluded. Getting anywhere – even to the small grocery is about a 30 minute drive. There are horses at the end of the road you get to see every time you drive in and out and one of them always had his chin up on a post to greet us. The whole experience was great!

Owner's reply:

Sandy, I"m so delighted the cabin lived up to your sisters' get-together hopes. I'm so lucky to have wonderful guests like you all. Here's to you! And here's hoping you'll plan to return again soon. Maybe you could really take advantage of the cooler season this winter and have your reunion around that terrific wood stove! Whatever you decide, I"m wishing you and yours a terrific rest of the summer!

A fantastic cabin with beautiful views
We thoroughly enjoyed our getaway weekend with our 16 month old grandson. The cabin is perfect in every way; sunny or rainy it was the perfect place to relax. We were able to take him to the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga and The Tigers for Tomorrow in Alabama; he enjoyed them immensely, but perhaps exploring the outdoors around the cabin with the neighbors dogs were more fun. The cozy rustic cabin brought back many wonderful memories of my childhood growing up in my parents cabin the in Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

There's no TV but lots books, games and jigsaw puzzles to entertain you. If you're needing to reconnect as a family, we highly recommend this cabin; it's a wonderful peace of heaven. It would definitely accommodate a group of six comfortably. A wonderful loft for a couple, downstairs and cozy bedroom with two twin beds and the sleeper sofa that's amazingly comfortable. We elected to sleep on the sofa bed so we'd be on the the same level of our grandson. They provided a highchair and a pack play at no extra cost.

The views from the screened porch top it off perfectly. We are so glad we decided on this cabin over all the others we considered. We are very thankful for the opportunity to enjoy Sara's home. We will definitely book it again in the future.

I'm so pleased everything was to your satisfaction. Especially with your little guy along! I'm glad you agree with me that it is a terrific place for very small children. The porch is a natural romper room, isn't it?
Please come back, soon! Sara

JULY, 2016 The cabin was absolutely perfect in every way and Sara, the owner, was fantastic!
From my first inquiry asking if my three dogs would be allowed, Sara, the owner, was so warm, friendly, and extremely helpful. She made the whole experience great for us! The cabin was perfect. It had everything we needed and it was beautifully decorated. We loved the screened in porch and my dogs loved taking walks on the quiet, private road. It was the best way to spend a 4th of July weekend- so peaceful and serene. I highly recommend this wonderful place and hope to return again!

Thanks so much for the beautiful compliments! Most of my guests quickly become friends. And wonderful, responsive folks like you make sharing my cabin such a joy. I hope you will come back this fall or winter so you can experience the cabin wearing a different personality. Just as fun, but definitely different! Meantime, have a great rest of the summer!

This is an adorable cabin. It is very clean, and there are a lot of details which are very charming. The location of being perched on the brow and the view from the porch is very unique and beautiful and unlike any area we have traveled before. For our anniversary weekend, Saturday was very foggy and rainy, and we so enjoyed spending time under a blanket on the screen porch glider with a cup of hot chocolate. We dined at both The Crushed Tomato in Summerville, GA and Moonlight Bistro in Mentone, AL, and enjoyed both of those experiences. Sunday, the weather was more inviting, and we went to Desoto Falls and Cloudland Canyon. Both were spectacular experiences. Cloudland Canyon had hikes for all levels. The owner is very nice, communicative, and prompt if you have questions. We would definitely stay her again...

My Response
It really sounds like you all had the best of the many worlds that Acorn Ledge Lodge has to offer: the cozy, rainy-day retreat, the better-weather state park exploration, the yummy local eat-fest, and the amazing Mentone 'tiquing and dining experience. And you packed them all into one weekend! I'm impressed! I sincerely hope you'll return very soon. Congratulations on the anniversary. I'm so glad the visit helped to make the occasion special. Best to you, Sara

For the second year in a row, my family and I were able to spend it at our favorite place-Acorn Ledge Lodge! Friday evening was spent on the porch, plotting and planning for our "legit" hiking day Saturday! And hike we did; from The Pocket Trail to the "Estelle Mines" trail! We visited WMA Pigeon Mountain to Rocky Road and the AMAZING view, and lightly explored a few caves! Rounded the entire day off with a meal at our favorite eatery, The Wildflower Cafe in Mentone. Thank you again for sharing this very special place with us. Already scouting a time for our next visit! ❤️

My Response
I believe this is the first time the whole family has visited the cabin at one time? How perfect for Mother's Day, Michelle! I'm so happy you seem to know how to find and take advantage of all the amazing natural sights and hiking and caving activities the area has to offer. Looking forward to welcoming you again soon, as you mentioned, in June! Take care till then. Sara

Home away from home

We recently rented Acorn Ledge Lodge for a "home" for our family of five. (My job was working in north GA.) Sara was one of the only willing owners to rent by the month ( and we called a lot of owners.) She was so helpful in calling the post office to let us use her mailbox, finding out where to take our trash, and she was even going to try to set up with some type of cable/satellite but we ended up not needing the cabin as long as originally intended. Besides the awesomeness of the cabins owner, Sara, the cabin itself is a little piece of Heaven on Earth. The cabin was well equipped with all the amenities of home. It was spacious enough for all of us, as well. We enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness of the serene location. If you are looking for a place to unplug and unwind and just relax then you can sure find this on the back screened porch of Acorn Ledge Lodge.

A Great Getaway
The Acorn Ledge Lodge was the perfect choice for our 30th anniversary getaway. The log cabin had a warm welcoming feel about it that you just can't find at any motel/hotel. Sara, the owner, was very accomendating with her arrival instructions and local attraction suggestions. Thank you for a great stay.

Thanks so much for the great review! And congratulations! I'm just so pleased that your anniversary turned out as you'd hoped and that my cabin could play a part in that. I'm doubly flattered by your words since I know you come from a gorgeous area in the East Georgia mountains. I was a little nervous that our "ridge" might not measure up to them thar hills that you are used to farther east! But they each have their own beauty and charm, and it's all Georgia! Well, y'all come, now, you hear? And bring your friends. No kidding! Best Wishes for many more anniversaries! Sara

The cabin is absolutely great in every way. It surpassed all our expectations. Even the rainy weather couldn't dampen the good times we had here. The cabin provided a great opportunity to forget about our normal life pressures and just totally relax. That's something hard to do these days. Additionally, Sara the cabin owner must be some sort of executive planner because I've never seen a place so well stocked with anything one could need and forgot to bring. If you're looking for a beautiful, quaint, super scenic getaway, Acorn Ledge Lodge is the perfect place.

Thanks so much, Tina. I'm always hoping that everything is satisfactory for my guests. Your kind words help me know maybe I'm doing something right! What a pleasure it was to rent to you all. I hope you make it over to Cloudland from Baton Rouge again, real soon! Sara

What a Wonderful Time!

We decided to go to Acorn after seeing pictures of the quaint cabin, and couldn't be happier that we did! Though February, and a bit chilly yet, that did not deter us from taking advantage of sleeping on the large screened porch, which overlooks the beautiful Valley below, we both agreed it was like comfort, listening to the rain on the tin roof, this was definately our room of choice from morning coffee, to "glamping" at night. The decorations of the cozy cabin are wonderful, there are quilts galore if your chilly. Though small in size, there is ample room for a family with sleeping areas galore.....Cloudland Canyon was wonderful for hiking to the falls, not even a 30 min drive, Sara leaves you with info on local restaurants. We are already planning our next visit to this cozy getaway spot! Thank you Sara.

Owner's Response: I was so happy you were finally able to put together some time for yourselves and spend it at the cabin. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed your vacation. And I'm pleased that the cabin has now entered the ranks of "glamps!" ( I'm not sure it qualifies for the glam part of that term.) I'm also so glad you got to enjoy sleeping on the porch. Winter guests rarely have that treat. But I know the weather was unseasonably warm this year. I hope you will return soon. Maybe your next visit will be in summer, so you can witness what a difference the different seasons make at Acorn Ledge Lodge. Best wishes for the coming spring! Sara

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the most fun things to do at your vacation rental?
A: Most people are so glad to get totally away from the sounds and distractions of home that they spend a large part of their time just sitting on the porch soaking up the peace and quiet! There are plenty of deer and all kinds of unusual birds, if you are patient. Of course, families with kids enjoy the state parks. I think the hiking opportunities are exceptional. Please just ask me and I'll provide that information.
Q: What makes your vacation rental special?
A: Acorn Ledge Lodge is truly unique. You'll never find another one like it. It was begun as a labor of love by an interesting man who now lives in Louisiana. He got the shell built and has said that he slept most nights down on the lower deck in the open air as he put the logs together. When he decided to retire back in LA, friends of mine who are local farmers, but whose avocation is as artists and artisans, completed it with their own hands. Many of the unique touches you will see, specifically the acorn theme, were created by them and by other local artisans.

There is a "faux" secret one of them created. If you find it, let me know, and you get a free two-night weekend at the cabin!
Q: What's the coolest nearby activity?
A: There are so many amazing things nearby. I love St. Joseph's church, built into a mountainside in Mentone. Most people ask about Cloudland Canyon State Park and it's spectacular hang gliding, only 35 minutes away from the cabin. The restaurant is 5 star, I believe. I"ve never been! But it is a must for very special occasions. To me, the best activity would be any arts festivals sponsored by the active Mentone arts community. Antiquing and terrific restaurants are also in Mentone. Maybe the only snow skiing in Georgia or Alabama, which can be found in Mentone (where else?)
