Amaxing Coconut Hill Cottage in St. John
June 10, 2008
Our family of 5 totally enjoyed our stay at Coconut Hill cottage. The view was absolutely amazing. The screened porch was large and we enjoyed all of our meals there. We enjoyed the use of a cooler and several beach chairs daily as we headed to various beaches on the island. The owners could not have been nicer including some useful advice about what to bring, where to rent a car, how to catch the ferry, etc.
We just completed our first week of vacation ever in the Virgin Islands and had the pleasure of spending it at the Tradewinds Cottage. We took a chance on a website and great email interactions with Lois Wood and wre not disappointed. The accommodations were perfect - they seemed to think of everything we would need before we needed it (including beach towels, beach chairs, beach bags, straw mats, coolies for our drinks, etc.) We walked in on Saturday, 3/19 and thought we had died and gone to heaven - the views were so fantastic that we stayed home every night and cooked dinner in to enjoy the deck. We even slept out on the deck twice. The east/southeast side of the island is very remote - roads are winding and very hilly which makes for beautiful vistas. Lunches in Coral Bay are great - you don't even need to go into Cruz Bay unless you did not bring enough food on the first trip from the car barge. You do need a car as Lois recommends. Our favorite beach was Jumbie Beach for swimming and snorkeling (look on a good map - on Route 20 after Trunk Bay). Salt Pond Bay was close and we went there every day late in the afternoon for a swim and quick snorkel. Thanks for making our 25th anniversary trip a week to remember.
Deborah Taylor & Louise Daigle,
This was our first visit to St. John, and we were so enamored with it that we plan on returning frequently. Amazingly, the Tradewinds Cottage is even better than it looks on the website. The view is georgeous, and the cabin is surprisingly spacious and comfortable. We would highly recommend St. John and Tradewinds Cottage to anyone who desires beautiful views, white sand beaches, rolling hills, and wildlife.
Robin and Megan Haworth,
A little late now but...
We had the great pleasure of staying at Tradewinds Cottage the week after this past Thanksgiving (Nov 27th - Dec 4th, 2004). I think the easiest way of putting it is to say it was a magical experience, one that will bring us happy memories for long in the future.
The house itself is simple but elegant, with a quirky twist that just fit our style. Most importantly it was comfortable (not to mention clean) - a place you can happily use as just a place to drop your stuff, or spend all day. The decor, the deck, the mood of it was made to relax in giddy enjoyment.
The view, the view was amazing. It presented extraordinary vistas from sunrise to sunset (and having a 2 year old at the time, we did not miss a sunrise, nor, frankly, would we have wanted to). Every part of the day had something new to offer in this panorama (and it is a panorama) and no two days seemed exactly alike. If you bring a camera, prepare to shoot a lot of picture from this deck - it is impossible not to. If you don't bring a camera, well, then you are crazy!
The thing is, we had originally wanted to rent a cottage directly on the ocean, however after staying here and being spoiled by this view, I cannot imagine having wasted the chance at this for a flat, unchanging, view of a beach instead. I suspect, unless we stay at the Tradewinds again (which is quite likely really), we will never be satisfied with the view from another island stay.
Lois is also an enthusiastic pleasure to work with. She will not lead you wrong, and while you might be tempted to think she exagerates, she does not. Listen to her and take her advice, you will not be disappointed.
The Tradewinds Cottage is something not to be missed - to the point that part of me doesn't want to write this and risk having it stolen up by other travelers. Stay, relax, and enjoy.
We had a great time at Tradewinds Cottage Feb. 12 - 19th, 2005. This was our first trip to the islands and being at the cottage was a wonderful experience! The cottage is beautifully decorated, comfortable and clean. It had everything we needed, it felt like home. The view from the deck is AMAZING. It was so wonderful to come home to this beautiful place every day. Lois and Doug have an extensive CD collection which we made use of! We also really enjoyed the hummingbirds and bananaquits (be sure to bring brown sugar for them!), tiny geckos and the lovely garden! It was perfect for the both of us and we really loved it. We would highly recommend the cottage and Lois was a wonderful "hostess."
Diane and Rod Melotte,
I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed Tradewinds (12-25-04 - 1/1/05). It was my fourth visit to St. Johns and I still find it as amazingly beautiful as the first time. Your "home" made it extremely wonderful. With the views out the windows, we felt like we were on a boat surrounded by water. It was clean and comfortable in every way. We even availed ourselves of Cathy's talents as a massage therapist, and agreed it was the best massage we have ever had. She was terrific.
Thank you for having a wonderful place for people like us to call home for a week. I have never felt so relaxed and stress free.

My wife and I, along with our two teenage kids, spent a week at Tradewinds July 3-10, 2004 and had a blast. We hiked and snorkeled all over the east end of the Island and enjoyed the shops, beaches, and restaurants at the West end. While there are plenty of good restaurants at both ends of the Island, our most enjoyable meals were the ones our kids designed and helped prepare in the kitchen (and on the grill) at Tradewinds. Morning coffe on the deck watching the pelicans diving into the bay below Tradewinds was a great way to start a day. Don't miss the hike south to Ramshead and if you decide to hike the trail from the Monrovian church to Waterlemon Bay, do yourself a favor and drive the dirt road to the top of the mountain and walk down the other side. It's a great hike and the snorkeling is some of the best on the Island. Tradewinds is a great base camp and I'd gladly recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from the noise and expense of Cruz Bay. I also recommend that you rent a car on St. Thomas and ride the car ferry to St. John. It doesn't add any cost and it saves a lot of hassle.
We have just returned from the most fantastic week at Tradewinds. The cottage is truly a "Home away from Home" with everything you could possibly need. The views from the cottage and the deck are stunning by both day and night. Nearby Salt Pond Bay is a must for snorkelling.
We had such a relaxing time there we simply didn't want to leave!
Sue & Graham Hutchison,
We absolutely loved the Tradewinds Cottage. Our honeymoon dreams were absolutely realized in this gem of a cottage on St. John. The constant breeze was intoxicating and the view from the deck just spectacular! Everything you could ever want or need at your fingertips and a TERRIFIC CD collection which provides the perfect soundtrack to your Island vacation. The combination of the stunningly beautiful beaches of St. John and the relaxing comforts of Tradewinds add up to a truly magical experience! Thanks!
Shannon & Max,
Tradewinds Cottage is an awesome getaway for both solo travellers and couples. I spent four days there on my own and had a great time. But I must confess that I couldn't help thinking it would have been even better had my girlfriend been there with me. The cottage is equipped with everything you need and then some. The deck is awesome - spectacular views of the ocean and surrounding islands by day, brilliant stars by night. The beach close by - Salt Pond Bay - is excellent. Not too crowded and very scenic. The hike to Ram Head is a "must do." Incredible views from the summit. I can't say enough about St. John and the great vibe. I went to relax - mission accomplished. Thanks, Lois, for making your island getaway available to people like me who need a retreat from the hustle and bustle.
Great location & view what else can you ask for. We had a great week (June 5--12) at The Tradewinds Cottage we where sorry to leave. We're looking forward to returning in the future. The island and beaches are beautiful. YO HO HO & a Bottle of Rum.
Betty & Frank Vento,
Hi. I have been meaning to email to tell you thank you so very much for your hospitatlity. Bryan and I had the best vacation ever. It was well worth the wait. My only complaint is that it went by WAY too fast. Cathy and Capt. Clark were GREAT as well. Tradewinds is a jewel and you can feel all the love that you and Doug put into it. THANK YOU for a great experience! We will remember it for the rest of our lives!!
Stanlyn & Bryan,
We spent one glorious month at Tradewinds in January 2004...(while New York State froze) and had a fabulous time. It was such a pleasure to open the door and walk into a paradise. The views from all the windows and especially the deck, were heavenly.Everything we needed was there, from beach chairs to kitchen appliances to videos and music. Lois and Doug were wonderful invisible hosts, who made sure that everything was perfect. The style and ambience of the cottage is warm and artistic and beaches were close...the whole month was a dream come true....tina and fred morris
tina and fred morris,
What a wonderful little gem. We were there June 30th through July 5th (I think!). It was our honeymoon and it was wonderfully beautiful. Sitting on the back deck, listening the winds is pure communion with God. WOW...I want to go back.
The place is impeccable as well. Wonderfully decorated and clean, clean, clean. I want that shower for my home.
Kristen and Patrick Gill,
We stayed at Tradewinds in May and had a wonderful time. It was the perfect getaway. We did nothing but read, swim, and relax - just what the doctor ordered to de-stress. Perfect memories from a perfect place.
Anthoy & Cindy Povio,
Just returned from a glorious week in the Tradewinds cottage. What a perfect place to escape from the stresses of the "real" world. We felt so comfortable and had all the convieniences we needed plus a few extra bonuses. A terrific collection of music and movies for the occasional rainy night and a cozy place to curl up and enjoy. A breathtaking sunrise viewed from the deck the next morning put the icing on the cake. We hope to return again and again!!!!
Joyce & Walt Newman,
This was our first trip to the Caribbean and also our first trip off the mainland with our 13 month old. After traveling to several islands in the Caribbean, both staying in villa's and camping, it was great to land at Tradewinds where we had 'most" of the comforts of home at our fingertips (note:it is entirely not possible to have all of them with an infant!) The accomodations were clean, comfortable and with breathtaking views. While our daughter fell asleep, we were able to make dinner, enjoy a bottle of wine and take in life from the deck. Thanks for a great stay!

Lois and Doug,
Thank you for sharing your wonderful house with our family! I am still dreaming about the views from EVERY room in the house! Everything we needed was right there, beach towels, chairs and even a tent to keep our 20 month old nice and cool on the beach, although he spent most of his time looking at the fishies and playing in the sand. Your house is so comfortable and welcoming- we can't wait to go back!
Michelle & Taylor Smith,
Wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed the cottage. It was perfect! The location, the prevailing winds, and most of all, the incredible views! We hardly left it at all! Why go to the beach with such ultimate peace surrounding us? We had a wonderful experience and cant thank you enough for sharing your beautiful space with us. You are very blessed to own such a space. Kudos to you!!!!! Thanks again and perhaps we will rent again in the future.....

I've been to St. John before, but I'm spoiled rotten now! I don't want to stay anywhere other than on Sugar Bird Hill. Your house is so warm, comfortable and homey. The views are totally spectacular, great breezes, sun and warm temperatures daily and NO BUGS!!!! Quite frankly, it's not fair to have all that, plus great restaurants, nicest beaches and water for snorkeling and swimming. I want to retire there for six months a year. Thanks so much. I had a fabulous time.
