About Cortona

Perhaps best known these days as the setting for the book and movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" a gorgeous hillside town, Cortona has a long history dating back even before its time as an important Etruscan center.

A small but charming town in the Valdichiana, Cortona is in the province of Arezzo in southern Tuscany.

The city, enclosed by stone walls dating back to Etruscan and Roman times, sits on the top of a hill about 600 meters (about 1968 feet) above sea level. This dominant position over the valley offers a spectacular view from all over the town of the surrounding valley and even Lake Trasimeno.

The heart of Cortona is Piazza della Repubblica, with the Palazzo Comunale or town hall building overlooking the square.

Casa di Amici is a wonderful independany property, in the Historical Centre of this magnificany village!

Note from Owners:

I have never met anyone that didn't fall in love with the people, scenery, food and lifestyle Italy offers. It truly is everything you have ever heard.

The Italian people are generous, friendly and warm.

Slow down.
Take the time to really see Italy.
Walk slower.
Eat slower.

Don't expect the same luxuries as in North America. Don't expect to be served immediately or have lunch in 15 minutes or less.
Savor the day, the time with friends and the experience.
Enjoy the views and make your memories.

I see foreigners racing through towns trying to pack everything in within a short period of time.

Italy will draw you in and make you question your life back home.

We hope to welcome you to Casa di Amici ( a friends house) soon!

We stayed in the delightful Sofia apartment for 4 nights and appreciated the stylish decor, comfortable, large mattress and peaceful but central location. We have stayed in Cortona many times before in 2 different hotels, which we like too, and another apartment, but we will now look to return to the Sofia apartment the next time we come to Cortona. It has everything you need to self cater - just watch your head on the beams in some places. The owner, Samantha, couldnt be more helpful or communicative by email, as was Federica, the lady who lives in the ground floor apartment and manages the accommodation. Taxis were ordered for us and train tickets printed - small things that were so helpful in making our travels easy. We rested well here and look forward to returning. Highly recommended!!

Owner Supplied Testimonials

Once we figured out parking (hardest part of the trip and requires patience if you want to park free), rolling our bags to the apt was a BREEZE and no where near as steep as I had anticipated, but do pack a rolling bag. The apt was exactly as pictured, but the image that Sam has posted of the view doesn't do it justice! It is amazing in every light of day or night. Sunsets are amazing from the wall by the museum outside the apt. You'll be lucky to get a little rain as the wet rooftops were so vibrant and with our trip being in Nov, the smoke from the chimney tops made for some amazing photos and was so "Disney-like!" We fought over who would take the first photo! The comfy pretty living room was a perfect size for my family of 4 after we borrowed the chair from the kitchen. Keep in mind that my adult children took over the sofa with their social media devices immediately. Which by the way, Sam's notes warned of the weak wifi connection, but we did not have a single problem with 4 very social adult photographers posting and emailing. We did not however watch tv... so can't report on why it's there :) haha. The kitchen has all the equipment you should need for cooking. We cooked breakfast daily & dinner a few nights to try our locally sourced pasta, cheese and wine! (yes, there's a dishwasher :) The bathroom has a shower, albeit it small, it did not lack hot water and there is a clothes washer w/ and drying racks and lots of space and empty shelving for your belongings. We over packed; didn't need the washer though. The Master bedroom is a great size and has a great window above the bed if you like an open window for sleeping! The second bedroom is WAY bigger than expected, however no storage, but it was perfect for my well traveled adult children who need very little. They said the beds were all they needed and they were perfect. (Daughter needed earplugs for brother's snoring #familyproblems.) Cortona is small in the BEST way and was an absolutely PERFECT location for exploring the Tuscan Hill Towns. After exploring Cortona on foot (every inch in and around the outside wall) and a local artist's studio in a nearby town, we visited Siena, Montepulciano, and Civita di Bagnoregio (the dying city, foot bridge access, population 8! SO FUN!). Sam couldn't have been more helpful! Answered every email within hrs if not immediately. She's adorable! We will go back, there is so much more to see in every season! Thanks Sam! We hope to meet you on our next visit! :D

Great, clean, tastefully decorated and uncluttered apartment in the middle of everything with awesome view. Super responsive owner, comfortable beds, kitchen suitable for preparing meals with food market steps away. Parking available in easy walking distance inside the walls and outside ZTL. We spent many hours happily scaling/wandering Cortona from one end to the other & also made daytrips to Orvieto, Assisi, Poppi, Monterchi, Arezzo, happy to come back to Cortona as a home base. Lots of other greatest hits within driving distance. Shopping, art, garden, playground, Saturday market, piazza & street life all in walking distance. We stayed in heat wave in July and were fine with fans. Stayed with two kids and worked out great with layout, clothes washer, clean modern bathroom.
My Response
Thank you Paula. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay, we were thrilled to welcome you to Tuscsny, Cortona is beautiful, and even after ten years I am still in love with it. We are always so happy to hear other people enjoy it too. Thank you again and we hope you come back again soon! Samantha

This property was beautiful. We had a rental lined up for a week in rome and when we got there, it was not as advertised- so we had to find something last min and the moment we saw this we knew where we wanted to be. Samantha was SO nice and helpful through the whole process. She was very accomidating. The flat is so nice, and the view is something you just have to see. We arrived at night, so when we woke up the next morning (after a great nights sleep in the very comfy bed), we were just amazed at the beautiful views from the kitchen and living room! Everything is new and updated, its got the italian amenities with conceniences as well. Cortona was an awesome little town to stay in- you can walk from the flat not even a min and your in the square where you can get great coffee and pastries. A must eat is Nessum Dorma- the food was fantastic- we ate in the cellar, and it was beautiful. The owner was so nice and helpful accomidating us with our 1yr old dauhter. You will definatly be missing out if you dont stay here. Its a must!
P.s. We missed a delivery of an item for our daughter before we left back home and Samantha has been so kind to help us in getting it sent back to us. A big life saver for sure!
My Response
Thank you Brittney for the kind words. Cortona is a beautiful place and I am so happy your travels led you to us. We would love to welcome you back anytime!

The apartment was everything that I could ever expect. Lovely furnishings, totally outfitted with everything one would want, clean and a view to remember forever. Was greeted at the apartment and Samantha (owner) was most helpful and very informative on the area. Cortona is a lovely hilltop town. Great restaurants and friendly people. I would definitely recommend this apartment, or either of her other two to friends and family. I want to go back as soon as I can! Great apartment Samantha.

My extended family stayed in the Marcelo and Sofia apartments. The booking process was simple. Samantha was incredibly helpful with developing our travel plans. She has a good knowledge of traveling in Italy. Indeed, she is a great ambassador for country! Her love of the area is infectious. Cortona is a beautiful, quaint hilltop town. It has plenty of amenities, but not in the least "touristy." The people of Cortona are very kind and welcoming. We were particularly impressed with how accepting of children the people are. Most locals speak some degree of English which makes getting by a lot easier. There are plenty of affordable delicious, restaurants in town. We were very impressed with the accommodations. The apartments are located in a quiet part of the town and about a two minute walk from the main square. Free parking is available very close by. We felt very relaxed and at home in the apartments which have been newly renovated and decorated. The kitchens had everything we needed. There are a washer, iron, and hair dryer which were much appreciated. The beds were very comfortable. Samantha provided us a crib for our toddler without us even asking! Cortona is a great base of operations for exploring Tuscany and Umbria. From Cortona, we did day trips to Montepulciano, Perugia, Lucca, Siena, Florence, and Populonia. Cortona is a two hour drive from Rome. I highly recommend staying here. We had a great experience! Dave

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between staying in the Centre of Cortona or in a Villa?
A: Tuscany has the most magical views imaginable. You can see the Villas dotted throughout the entire region and it really does look like the pictures and TV. However, these Villas, although some quite grand and well restored, are very remote and you will need to drive to/from them daily.

This is very nice if all you want to do is tour during the day, and relax outside in quiet at night. It can be romantic.

But---if you are also visiting Italy to take in the culture, wine, delicious food, then you should opt for a vacation spot within the Historical Centre. There are a variety of different apartments to choose from. Some rustic and some very modern and luxurious (like ours).

But being in the centre means you can walk out to dinner, taste the amazing wines, and wonder the safe and wonderful medieval streets at night.

I love the country and villas, but for a vacation, I would highly recommend that you choose a village than the hills.
Q: Is it noisy in the centre of town?
A: Not at Casa di Amici.

Although just a few steps from the main Piazza, you are far enough away that you will have a quiet sleep and peaceful rest after a long day.

Some apartments overlook the Piazza and they are very nice too. But they can be a bit noisy in the early mornings with delivery trucks and the locals out for their daily tasks.
Q: How long should we stay in Tuscany?
A: Italy itself, isn't that big, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a lot to see!

Tuscany is very scenic and there are many hilltop towns that you should try to fit in your visit.
Most people that come to Italy do the big three (3) Venice, Florence and Rome. They fit Tuscany in the "Florence" section as we are quite close in Cortona for a day trip.

I recommend that you try for a minimum of 4 days but better to have a full week to be able to truly explore everything in the region.
Q: What is your favorite town?
A: Agh! So hard to answer that. I love everything about Tuscany.

We live in a small village called Cetona, not far from Cortona, in the Province of Siena. Cortona is in Arezzo. It is a very authentic town, and very few tourists, other than famous Italian actors, writers and designers. It is very small and we like the total Italian immersion we get in Cetona.

There are also two of the most amazing Tuscan restaurants in the region in Ceonta. They are called Merlo (in the tower) and Nilo in the Piazza. If you can, take a day trip to Cetona and eat in either of these places, for the most memorable lunch or dinner for your entire trip!

Oh...and because it is a local (non-tourist) location, the prices are very good!
Q: Is Italy safe for kids?
A: Italians LOVE KIDS.

I don't mean that they tolerate them or just like them they LOVE them! Just watch what happens when someone walks by with a stroller. Everyone goes crazy.

Italian culture is about community and family, and they feel children are a big part of their lives and celebrate them every day,

We have friends that were planning their visit to Italy to stay in Casa di Amici and were asking if they should bring their children.

Although not a lot of 'Kid" stuff to do in Tuscany (compared to Disneyland) but I told them YES! Kids belong there.

They will be safe, can play football/soccer in ancient piazzas, and everyone will love to watch them. Trust me. Kids are never a problem anywhere in Italy. (Other than pushing strollers up uneven thousand year old cobbled stone streets!)
