Area Information
The meandering Withlacoochee River, an Outstanding Waterway, runs from Tampa north and flows through Dunnellon, Inglis, Yankeetown and out to the Gulf of Mexico. It is home to many fish species both fresh and saltwater and the famous West Indies Manatee. The withlacoohee River has access for dropping you r boat or canoe, 2 minutes by car from the house. Lake Rousseau is about 4 minutes away ,aslo has free launches, and then The Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserve consists mainly of a large, remote, and undeveloped expanse of submerged seagrasses and nearshore marshlands located along some 150 miles of the northeast coast of the Gulf of Mexico where the Florida peninsula joins the panhandle. The preserve boundary encompasses all tidal lands, islands, seagrass beds, shallow banks, and submerged bottoms from the mean high water line extending 9 miles into the Gulf of Mexico. Landward, it includes all natural waterways tidally connected to the preserve to the extent of state jurisdiction.
Numerous estuaries, which nurture a diverse flora and fauna, are formed at the confluence of the many rivers and streams that flow into the preserve. Open waters and submerged bay bottoms of these estuaries support numerous species of commercially and recreationally important fish. The shoreline is dominated by intertidal marsh grasslands, a temperate natural community that is replaced in the tropics my mangroves. Some mangroves occur in the southern reaches of the marshes but are stunted and die back in periodic freezes.
the name would imply, the Big Bend Seagrasses Aquatic Preserve stretches along the whole of the Big Bend, from Wakulla County through Jefferson, Taylor, and Dixie counties until reaching its southern extent at Levy county. Nearby towns and cities include Inglis, Yankeetown, Cedar Key, Chiefland, Suwannee, Horseshoe Beach, Cross City, Steinhatchee, Fanning Springs and St. Marks. This is about a 9 minute drive, and has cook out, and boat launch facilites. This is a great Park, I have never really seen it that busy, just awesome great fishing. This is just a fantastic area for enjoying nature. There is a side walk from the property to town, so that you can walk or ride the one mile there. If you get bored with all that, then you can also
tube down the rainbow river, visit the dolphins in crystal river, great location with easy access to everything. Lots of other little towns to go antiquing and such in.
