About the area

Dauphin Island is a barrier island located three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Enter the island by crossing a three mile long high rise bridge which opened in 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from Fort Morgan offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island. The island is approximately 14 miles long and 1 ¾ miles wide at the widest point. The eastern six miles are inhabited while the western 8 miles are undeveloped and privately owned. Approximately 1300 permanent residents call Dauphin Island home. The number of residents soars during vacation and holiday times. The entire island is a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations from Latin America.

Getting here

If approaching from the west on I-10, take the first exit south at Grand Bay after entering into Alabama. Be careful on this last leg of your trip. You will be travelling on two-lane roads. They are very dark at night. Also don't speed, since the locals have warned me of speed traps. [Others say a faster, more direct and safer route is via exit 17 (the Tillman's Corner/Dauphin Island exit) whereby you take 193 the whole way. This is a longer route by at least ten miles, with only one brief dogleg, but the roads are better and there are fewer stop lights.] It is 16 miles between the Tillman's Corner I-10 exit and the Grand Bay I-10 exit.

Assuming you exit at Grand Bay, you will travel on Hwy. 188 passing through the town of Bayou LaBatre, made famous as the home of Forrest Gump. [The locals, as with Forrest Gump, do not pronounce the name as the French would, but rather say Bayou Labahtray.] Be on the lookout for signs directing you to Dauphin Island or the ferry. [This is the ferry from Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan.] There are about five hard turns after you exit I-10 and before you reach the island. After about 20 miles you get on Hwy. 193, which is called the Dauphin Island road. It is about 30 miles total from the Grand Bay exit from I-10 to the island.
