About Bethany Beach

Bethany Beach, Delaware Travel Tips

Known as one of Delaware’s Quiet Resorts, Bethany Beach offers a relaxed atmosphere and a long stretch of peaceful waterfront. With a classic boardwalk, a sandy beach, and plenty of space to kick back, this summertime destination has everything you want in a laid-back beach getaway.

A Short History of Bethany Beach

A relatively new community, Bethany Beach was settled at the turn of the 20th century as a sort of adults-only summer camp with Christian roots. Because its location was remote and transportation was difficult in the town’s early years, Bethany Beach remained quiet through about 1950. Amenities like a boardwalk, tennis court, and roads attracted new residents and visitors, and the construction of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in 1952 opened the doors to countless tourists. Beginning in the 1960s, resorts, high-rise condominiums and vacation homes rose in earnest, making this quiet beach spot the resort town it is today.

What Bethany Beach Does Best

Swimming, water sports, and relaxation are the name of the game in Bethany Beach. Take a dip, go for a sail, and pamper yourself at the spa before taking a catnap in the late afternoon sun.

Take a Swim

Swimming along the shores of Bethany Beach is one of the most popular summer pastimes here. With pristine waters and lifeguards on duty, this family friendly beach is always safe and clean. A lack of development surrounding the beach keeps it much quieter than neighboring beaches, but the Bethany Beach Boardwalk provides essentials like souvenirs, snacks, junk food, and clothing within a compact half-mile stretch.

There’s great fishing to be had off the shores of Bethany Beach, too, and both locals and tourists love surf fishing right from the beach. For deep water fishing, look no further than nearby Delaware Seashore State Park, where visitors can charter boats with experienced guides.

Go Sailing

Sailboarding and kitesurfing are ideal here, thanks to the shallow waters off Bethany Beach. Sailing, windsurfing, and kayaking are also popular, and it’s easy to rent gear right at the beach. Surfers will find plenty of waves at designated surfing beaches, and visitors can sign up for lessons at the Bethany Surf Shop. If motorized watersports are more your speed, book a parasailing excursion on one of the nearby beaches.
