It sits on a White Sand Beach like Destin and Pensacola. Our beachfront home on the Gulf of Mexico with absolutely sugar fine white sand is located on a beach rated by The Island Magazine a few years back as one of the ten prettiest beaches in the world. Dog Island is not connected by road to the mainland. Making the trip over from Carrabelle, on the charter boat is the first sign that you are in for something out of the ordinary.
This is not a place where you can play golf during the day or go to a bar at night. There is not a single store or restaurant on the Island. If your dreamed paradise is that you may find that you are the only one on the beach this is it. Please view the pictures of the house and its surroundings prior to inquiring. This is a place for peace and relaxation it is not a party house. A good book and long walk with the sounds of the waves in the background is what you will find here.
Our home is located on Dog Island which used to be part of St. George Island, but years ago was separated by a hurricane. It has the same beautiful sugary sand beaches as St. George, but is a totally different atmosphere and experience than St. George. The shelling is unbelievable, the beaches are as beautiful as anywhere in the world, but unlike St. George there is nothing commercial on the Island. There are no stores, no bars, no restaurants, and no connection to land except by boat or plane. You must take a charter boat for about 20 minutes to the Island for $75 each way, or land your airplane on the grass strip on the Island. Then you drive our 4 wheel drive pick up truck to the house or Michael meets you at the dock and transports you to the house. There is surf fishing and we have 2 kayaks for your use.
There are only 100+ homes on the Island, only 13 full time residents who prefer a very private setting. It is the private getaway that we all used to dream about where you may find yourself alone with your family on the beach day after day. To my knowledge it is the last of the quintessential old Florida getaways. It is an island where every year the huge sea turtles come to lay eggs, an island where crabs can still be caught with a net, where fishing is great from the beach, and where the phosphorous in the waves can be seen from the porch at night. Approximately 90 % of the Island is owned by The Nature Conservancy and is a wildlife preserve.
There are emergency services available by helicopter from the Island through 911, and our home is next door to a physician who is a permanent resident on Dog Island.
Our Home is only available on a 7 night rental basis and our guest are asked to clean the house and leave it in the same condition as it was found. We allow check in at 4 pm with check out the following Saturday at 10:30 a.m. If you wanted to arrive at the Island early on Saturday, there are motel rooms available in Carrabelle for a reasonable charge where you could spend Friday night.
Two years ago the home was renovated the kitchen (remember that you have to prepare all of your meals on Dog Island) with new cabinets, two full size refrigerators, counter tops, new range, cook top and oven with a warming drawer, and have just installed a new washer and dryer downstairs., We have a brand new water system which sanitizes the water and a reverse osmosis filter system for drinking water and for using in the ice maker. The new kitchen bar will easily seat 6 people for a full meal if you chose to be totally casual rather than sit at the table for a sit down dinner. We have direct TV . IT IS ILLEGAL TO RIDE OUTSIDE THE MAIN ROADS OR ON THE BEACH. You should not use the truck except when needed as diesel fuel is very difficult to transport to the Island. The truck to be used only between the house and the dock for fishing and making your daily trash run to the trash facility just to the right as you enter Dog Island from the Ferry dock.
I can assure you that if you would like to spend the week on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and have that beach basically to yourself, you will have a memorable vacation.
The features of our Old Florida Dog Island home include:
Gulf view from every room
After a charter trip ($75) the pickup (or Michael) will be waiting for you to transport your goods to the house from the dock.
PLEASE SEE THE PICTURES EACH WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS
2 bedrooms with Queen beds and each a gulf view, Sofa Sleeper in living room
Very large screened porch (50' X 10')
Large deck on gulf side for sitting or sunning
Water Conditioning System
Central Air and Heat
Fully equipped kitchen (my wife and I both love to cook) including great cookware and knives, blender, microwave, 4 eye stove, two refrigerators, 2 ovens, etc. (if there is anything special you will need please let us know)
4 Wheel Drive Pick up to use to and from the charter dock
The House (see the pictures) is the beach house that your children will never forget. Large porch (50' X 10') facing the gulf allows you to look at the gulf where because of its unique location (an island six miles off shore from Carrabelle, FL)it is so dark and beautiful at night that watching the phosphorous in the waves will give you chills. Great fishing in the area by charter or from the beach in front of the house. SHELLS! If you think there are shells on Sanibel Island there is no comparison. You can literally, if you choose to do so, pick up a truckload of shells every day.

We spent a week on one of the few unspoiled natural wonders left in our country. Great cabin, every need met, specially the need to be at the beach with family, wildlife and peace and quiet. If you are willing to take an adventure, this is the one you want!
Cloud Nine and then some
June 16, 2015
Two girl friends and I spent a lovely week 5/30-6/6. Honestly, we chose Cloud Nine because it had two kayaks which meant we only had to haul one from ATL. We got much more than two kayaks! We found a sparkling clean home (thanks, prior renter!), comfortable beds, great towels, soft sheets, matelasse' coverlets and dust ruffles, a fully stocked kitchen with reverse osmosis water purifier and an ice machine! We took advantage of the gas grill, blender, toaster oven, dishwasher and washer and dryer. Best part, by far, was the screened porch with adirondack chairs, picnic table and hammock...no bugs, great view of the Gulf and sunrises. We didn't tarry in the showers because we didn't want to run out of the water supply that is treated weekly. Doyle was quick to respond to a kayak glitch and it was remedied within 24 hrs. Good variety of seashells and the water was free of jellyfish and seaweed. There was a Spiritual feeling, riding in the camo truck, imagining and appreciating our soldiers who had occupied the very seat we sat on. In fact, Dog Island, surrounded by Nature, is hallowed ground to me. Thanks, Pat and Doyle. I hope this note finds you happy and healthy.

Great vacation, could not have been better
Paradise of Shelling Beach Home Dog Island, FL
May 18, 2015
We have just returned from a wonderful week long stay at Dowel Clouds house on Dog Island. The house is very nice and well-furnished and stocked kitchen even though when we were not at the lovely beach we spent most of our time on the screened in porch. Even though I was on vacation I found by self-up at our just after dawn on the porch with a cup of coffee. I think this will become an annual trip
April 22, 2015
This home is perfect for Dog Island! The porch was one of my favorite places to relax, in an Adirondack rocker with a cup of coffee and a book. We could hear the waves and see the ocean with no bugs to bother us. When we wanted sun, we could go down a level to the open deck and sit on the chaises, or walk down the boardwalk to the beach. The house is offset from the neighboring houses so there’s privacy too. The inside of the house is very comfortable and nicely furnished, and the kitchen very well-stocked (tip – don’t bring salt and pepper – there are probably 6 of each!). We have been coming to the island for almost 20 years, but stayed at the Inn every year prior to this. Therefore we always packed for every contingency, and although we tried to pack light this year, we failed miserably! Everything we could possibly need was there, including a new ice machine. We had a wonderful time, and didn’t want to leave. Thank you for opening your home to us!
Spring Break 2015
March 28, 2015
Waited to the last minute to make spring break plans. We had always wanted to try a house on Dog Island. I was happy to run across this house. We had a grand time. The house was perfect with its screened porches, Sun deck, and board walk to the beach. We had all the cookware and supplies needed to cook every meal we planned. The beach was impressive. We have lived in Crawfordville, Florida for eight years. I have been to every beach in this area, Dog Island was the best. Thanks to Michael and Steve for helping us with getting from the dock to the house. These guys were great. We broke in the new grill for everyone. Finally, we experienced: dolphins, great seashells, star fish, sand dollars, a small shark, sting rays, hermit crabs and fiddlers crabs.. Thank you Mr. Doyle for your hospitality. I look forward to returning in the future.

We sailed out to Dog Island on what turned out to be a chilly Thanksgiving weekend. The cold didn't stop me from sailing or my daughters from exploring the island and beaches... One of the neighbors was happy to help us with a little fishing and the girls became VERY picky about the shells they found - the longer we stayed, the more elaborate the shells had to be for the girls to care! And some were impressive by ANYONE's standards! The sunrise thru the windows overlooking the ocean was spectacular (not sure if it comes up that way in the summer, but it was awesome in late November)! And the view was more amazing at night with all the stars and very little artificial light... I'm on old sailor and I got to point out some interesting things to my daughters about the night sky that you just cannot see in areas with alot of light nearby... The accomodations were excellent for my family of 4. We lacked nothing! I Look forward to finding a reason to come back...

What a great home and vacation
September 19, 2013
My wife and I would like to thank the Clouds for the use of the wonderful home on Dog Island. This place is magical. It was unlike any vacation we have taken to the gulf region before. The house was well maintained. The screen porch was one of the best and was our favorite spot. We spent all of our free time here. If we were not exploring the island, looking for that prize shell, or fishing right behind the house we were parked on the screen porch. The shelling was amazing. I have never seen so many whole sand dollars before. The fishing behind the house was great. I caught pompano, ladyfish, bluefish, catfish, and a sting ray. There where also several large redfish running along the shore every evening. The weather was beautiful. We had rain for about 5 minutes one morning just before sunrise. The home was well stocked. Doyle was great to work with and the instructions he provided were helpful. The truck started right up and good. You will not go wrong with the Clouds. We left somethings at home and Captain Russell on the Ferry picked us up some items at the store and brought them over on his next trip. He is a great guy and very knowledgeable about the island. We both love the island and will be back to visit many times. It was just the type of vacation we are looking for.

We loved staying here. No stress at all. Once you get there put your purse and wallet away. From the screened porch and the beach, we watched dolphins, sea gulls, pelicans, & crabs. The fishing is fun. We will be back next year.

Our family made another trip to this fabulous home on Dog Island. Yet upon arrival we were stunned by the wonderful renovation made to this already wonderful home. This home has anything you need and then some to cook all your meals. The ice maker is a huge luxury to have. My family also loved the addition of the kayaks. The oceanview screened in porch with the rockers, table, and hammock is always a hit with my family. I'm so very thankful to have had the opportunity to take my family to this little piece of paradise to make priceless memories. This place is unbelievable, amazing, like no other and a must if you want to experience the pure wonders of a beach vacation along with exceptional amenities.

We rated this the best house we have ever rented. It was so well stocked with kitchen appliances, dishes, etc. The beach of course isi absolutely beautiful and natural. People on Dog Island aways make your stay their enjoyable. The owners were very helpful and we had no problems at all.
We came seeking relaxation and we got it!
September 6, 2012
This was our first time staying at Paradise of Shelling or on Dog Island. So we didn't know what to expect. We were to say the least pleasantly surprized. The beach house is so adorable & comfortable. Not knowing what we needed to bring we soon realized we packed too many clothes. A couple of swim suits or swim shorts is sufficient with a couple of shorts, shirts, and sandals. It is such a laid back atmosphere. We really enjoyed walking on the beach and seeing all the beautiful shells-pieces of some and whole ones too. Lots of Sand dollars! We enjoyed our mornings by having a cup of coffee and breakfast watching the dolphins swim by. Sometimes the dolphins came by a couple of times a day. We were looking for a place that was removed from the craziness of daily life and that is just what we got-much enjoyed and needed quiet and rest! The kitchen didn't lack for anything to prepare or serve a meal. The beds are comfy. It is so amazing that you can see the ocean from every room in the house. There are numerous beach toys for kids and adults! Beach chairs and umbrellas also available. And what's really nice is they are all in great shape. The owner, Doyle, was very easy to communicate with and very helpful with information and quickly answered all our questions. Also very wonderful and welcoming was the contact people on the island for this unit: Randy and Terry. They were awesome! They kept us well informed regarding Hurricane Isaac and they checked on us frequently making sure we were safe. We were asked to leave (mandatory evacuation declared) because of the Hurricane, they kept us up to date via cell and we were able to return the following day. We are so thankful to have found this little gem and would not hesitate to return. And hope to one day! Larry and Kelly

This was truly the most relaxing vacation ever. The house was well equipped. We loved the screened in porch and spent most of our time there. The beach is beautiful and private. We can't wait to go back.

Perfect Getaway Destination
July 15, 2012
We firmly believe we have found the perfect location to get away from the world for a week. Our first time to the island, my wife and I (by ourselves for the first time in forever) relaxed and and simply enjoyed sitting on the screened in porch just simply watching and listening to the waves. We have never been to a more peaceful setting. The house was perfect for our needs, could not ask for anything more. The shells and sand dollars we found are our treasures and we will look at them fondly remembering when and where we discovered them. We are envious of those that own homes on the island and can go more frequently than we will be able to. In saying that, my wife and I are already talking about when we may be able to get back to the island because believe me, we will be back. Thank you so much Mr. Cloud for sharing your home with us. We can not wait to get back !

A get a way from reality... :)
October 12, 2011
My wife and I have wanted to get away from the world for a long time and have talked of how enjoyable it would be to find a warm, sunny, sandy, quiet beach to do it. Well, we succeeded... and enjoyed our stay on Dog Island more than you can imagine. We didn't tell a soul, even our three children, we were going... The home was just right. What a wonderful setting. If you're expecting to use your cell phone and work while there... don't bother going. This was one of the real benefits of being there. Thanks for the awesome get a way.. :) Isaac & Valerie Jones
RESTFUL, RELAXING AND REWARDING
August 18, 2011
7 wonderful days on Dog Island and at the Cloud Nine residence. There are so many things to brag about. Not a clock in the home. I never had to worry if lunch or dinner would be served on time. The kitchen was well equipped. I never felt so relaxed when doing laundry. Grab a load and head down to the air conditioned laundry room, put them in to wash or dry and head on to the beach. I never had to worry about waiting my turn for the use of a commercial machine. The outside shower was refreshing after an enjoyable walk to find seashells. Not a sprint. Just a walk. At high tide the sand crabs were entertaining as they looked for food. The blue crabs were easily caught during high tide along the shore. The screened porches provided the opportunity for watching the peaceful sunrise or sunset. The 4 teenagers were able to finish their required summer reading without the interruption of texting or social networking. Everyone should be so fortunate to have this opportunity. We will definately return.

An island retreat
August 6, 2011
Dog Island cannot be adequately described in words. No other beach destination could be better, and the Cloud house is an ideal resting place. This was our second two-week stay. When we stay at the house the waves gently wash away the cares of the world, and our children are so free. The house is roomy, comfortable, and has everything you need for a great vacation. We will be back next year.
An amazing island home
May 14, 2011
My girlfriend and I had the distinct pleasure of renting this home in the last week of April 2011. And the simplest review would just say: 'idyllic and peaceful'. But let me provide further details. The house is on an island, thus unless you have a boat, you have to bring everything related to food and water yourself. The house itself has all the amenities that your own home will most likely have. You do not need to worry about needing or missing certain household appliances. Furthermore the home has the luxuries we all tend to use with a breathtaking view of the ocean. For those that love the ocean, having breakfast, lunch, or dinner facing the ocean will be a distinct treat. For the rest of us, like me, the actual beach will be an amazing experience in which you will enjoy miles of peaceful beach and the chance to collect a wide range of sea shells (maybe you might get lucky as us and find some that are as large as your head.

We thought our wedding day would be the best day of our lives. Watching my children find starfish and swim in the ocean beats it by a mile. Thanks Mr. Doyle and Terry. We found enough sand dollars to pay for the trip!!

Great trip to an incomparable place
June 16, 2010
Just wanted to say we really enjoyed the visit. This was our second trip to the island, and our first staying at a house. Dog Island is all about a remote natural experience, not luxury. Do not come looking for Hilton Head. This beach house was great. Loved the huge porch overlooking dunes and beach with oversized hammock. Spacious and comfortable. Well equipped. There is more sense of the owner's personality than most rentals we have visited. There are lots of steps up to the main floor. On-location support was very helpful. Caught lots of blue crabs and are having crab cakes tonight with the last of them. We were offered use of a kayak, which the kids loved. Met neighbors who are regular, which made it much more fun, especially for our kids. Water was beautiful, as clear as about anywhere we've been in the SE US. Sailing around the E. end, we saw a school of probably a thousand Cownose Rays. Sailing home saw our first Man o' War. If you want to come in your own boat as we did, you will need to make arrangements ahead of time. The harbor is a yacht club with limited transient slips. (not floating docks) I was told to call a couple days ahead to make sure space was available. Though it is not far from the mainland, you should be armed with good charts, tide tables, forecast and respect for the sea and weather. All in all, very memorable.
Very Relaxing Getaway!
May 20, 2010
This was our third trip to Dog Island and by far our favorite! This cute "bungalow" is right off the most lovely private beach you could ever find in Florida! You can walk a mile down the shell covered beach and never see another person. The house provided everything we needed and more! We truly felt like we were on cloud nine and hated to leave. We will definitely be back! Thanks for everything.

Best Kept Secret in Florida!
April 13, 2010
We stayed for three days and were delighted with the spacious rooms, water views from every room and all the comforts of home including a well equipped kitchen. Travel was easy, although it's a good idea to make your list and check it twice. The neighbors are friendly and we had the beaches on both sides of the island to ourselves. At night the star gazing is spectacular and the cross breezes lulled us to sleep. Beauty, peace and privacy - we'll be back soon!
