Casa Rio Sierpe is located among 2,500 acres of private reserve and adjoins the Térraba-Sierpe National Wetlands in the Osa Peninsula. This area is one of the most remote, most spectacular and wildest regions in the country home to 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity and dubbed by National Geographic as “the most biologically intense place on earth”. The house is located in the heart of true primary and secondary rain forest, a plethora of wild life is to be found many of which are endangered or threatened. There are breathtaking post card views from the house and direct ocean access where you will find extremely private, pristine beaches all only 15* min away by boat , we truly have it all!

At Casa Rio Sierpe you'll find ultra-private luxury accommodations and full service amenities typically only found in resorts but in the comfort and privacy of a home. Our newly built, 2,200 ft2 home is the perfect combination of modern and rustic styles blending Pacific Rim architecture. This gives the home an elegant sophistication that is very unique and certainly very Costarican. Carefully nestled in the rain forest atop a high ridge line * at 300 feet above sea level gives an almost 360 degree view of the surrounding rain forest, the Diquis river valley and three distinct mountain ranges in the distance. The climate is fresh with a mix of cool Pacific mountain and ocean air that circulates throughout the house and grounds. The yearly daily average temperature at the house is 85 degrees and the evenings are normally a pleasant 70-74 making it perfect for sleeping!

Given the remote location of the home, we are 100% off the gird and solely relying on solar energy as the sole provider of our power. Having said that, we have made every effort to assure that our guest will be as comfortable as possible making sure that you never feel as though you are roughing it! We rely on 9 large ceiling fans and the design and the location of the house to keep our guest cool. All rooms in this luxury home are fully screened allowing sun light and cool breezes to fill the interior but keeping the unwanted guest out. Directly behind the house you will find a well-manicured trail that leads you to a small, private, waterfall and swimming hole only a 10 min walk away.

The amenities of the home include two bedrooms with one attached full bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, inside dining room, bar, living room with queen size futon and 800 ft2 of covered deck. The first bedroom features a queen size bed, large armoire and a 180 degree view of the rain forest, the surrounding tropical landscape and river valley below. The second bedroom features a king size bed and private balcony overlooking the valley. The over sized kitchen is fully equipped with top of the line appliances including a side by side refrigerator/freezer, 6 burner gas stove with oven, reverse osmosis purified water and of course a blender! Also, don’t worry about doing those dishes, you’re on vacation, our staff will take care of those as well! All of this is sure to sooth any culinary indulgence that a guest may have! The living room opens directly onto the 600 ft2, covered back terrace complete with ceiling fans, double hammock, lounge & rocking chairs, Webber BBQ and a large dining room table. This is the perfect spot for your daily relaxation, enjoying breath taking views and meeting many of our local neighbors as well. Almost on any given day expect to see resident Scarlet macaws, parrots, Toucans, Aracaris, noisy parakeets, hummingbirds, squirrels, Howler monkeys, white face Capuchin monkeys, frogs, butterflies and at night Kinkajous. And if you are very fortunate you may even see the endangered Spider monkey, Ant eaters, Tayras, Sloths, Jaguarundi cat, White-lipped peccary pigs and the White nosed coatis.

Not only is Casa Rio Sierpe’s location poised for optimal wildlife observation it is also a perfect home base for a variety of activities from land to sea that are sure to keep even the most active vacationer busy. Most of these tours are given at no additional charge to our guest with their paid rental. When you come and visit us, included is a full time guide and housekeeper whose sole job is to make your vacation the most memorable, stress free, work free as possible any way that they can. They will give you private guided tours, carry your grocery bags, take you river fishing, clean the house, find fresh fruit, do your dishes and even get you a fresh coconut to drink at the beach. We have over 10 miles of hiking trails along with several kayaking trails that our resident onsite guide will personally guide you on, day or night, along the way pointing out hard to see wildlife that you would normally miss and introducing you to interesting flora and fauna. If you would like to go on a night tour, no problem, if you want to go to a rain forest waterfall, no problem, how about getting you some wild cilantro from the forest for that fresh Ceviche you’re going to make, they can do that to. Would you like to explore the Sierpe River and her tributaries by Kayak? Kayaks are on site for our guests to use at any time. And lastly, how can a vacation along one of the world’s most beautiful river’s be truly memorable without being able to experience the natural beauty and wonders of that river without having access to a boat? Included in your rental fee we will provide you with unlimited use of a 20’ boat for use on the river and a captain to drive it, you’re only responsible for the gas that you use! Simply sit back, relax let the captain do the driving and embark on a one of countless river adventures from a lazy sunset float with cocktail in hand to bird watching and of course river fishing. How does fresh snapper sound for dinner? Also have I mentioned that we have one of the most amazing, private and secluded beaches in the area and only a 15 min boat ride away? So how about a barefoot adventure on a pristine secluded beach?

There are many other tours available in the area that are not included in the rental fee as they’re operated by independent tour companies. These operators will pick you up directly either from the house or from our private river dock for any of the following; Horseback riding through the rain forest, tour of Corcovado National Park, Cano Island is directly off the coast offering the best snorkeling and diving in all of Costa Rica, World Class Sport Fishing less than 10 miles out, whale watching and many more tours guaranteeing to indulge your every whim with any array of Pacific Coast or rain forest pastimes

* The house is located on a high ridge line giving it amazing views and cool breezes but it also means that you have the equivalent of a few blocks walk from the dock to the house and involves a short but relatively steep hill at the end. Don’t worry we will transport your luggage and supplies for you. Guest considering Casa Rio Sierpe should be physically fit and better geared towards those who are adventurous & enjoy hiking

*Travel times on the river by boat are estimates and will vary slightly depending on the load of the boat (how many guest and how much gear) and how much wildlife we stop to look at along the way!!!

About the area

Casa Rio Sierpe is located among 2500 acres of private reserve and adjoins the Térraba-Sierpe National Wetlands in the Osa Peninsula—one of the most beautiful and wild parts of this country and home to 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity. THE OSA PENINSULA Located in the south west of Costa Rica, the Osa Peninsula is one of the most remote, most spectacular and wildest regions in the country. It is one of the last places in Costa Rica to be settled - it is only within the last 10 years that it has had road access - and consequently much of the Peninsula is still covered in majestic, pristine rainforest. At least half of the Osa's extensive tracts of rainforest and swamps are protected by Corcovado National Park, and Private Reserves. Its forests are home to endangered species such as Baird's tapir, the white-lipped peccary, the jaguars the America crocodiles, and the harpy eagle (only recently been re-sighted). It boasts the largest population of the endangered scarlet macaws in the country, and is the center of the very restricted distribution of the endangered Central American squirrel monkey. This small peninsula is host to almost half of Costa Rica's 860 species of birds (that is almost 5% of the world's species!), 140 species of mammals, and 117 species of reptiles and amphibians. Almost 750 species of trees have been cataloged in the area, more trees than in all of the North temperate regions of the world combined. Impressive credentials indeed! Per unit area, the Osa Peninsula holds possibly the highest natural diversity on earth. The National Geographic magazine described the Osa Peninsula as 'the most biologically intense place on earth'. This description is a reference to the incredible abundance of wildlife on the Osa Peninsula -not only in it's rainforests, but in it's surrounding marine environment as well. Botanically, the Osa Peninsula has strong affinities with that of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, and its unique forests contain more endemic plants and animals than in any other area of Central America. Climatically, the Osa is the wettest place on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, receiving up to 160 inches of rain annually. Some of the Osa Peninsula's landmarks are described below. RIO SIERPE and the Terraba River valley The Rio Sierpe and its watershed, the Dequis Valley, isolate the Osa Peninsula from the mainland. This substantial river is unusual in that it is tidal almost up to its source, the Sierpe Lagoon. The Rio Sierpe is roughly divisible into two wetland areas: the flooded forests of the upper Rio Sierpe basin, and the extensive mangrove swamps of its delta. The upper Rio Sierpe wetland is virtually uninhabited, relatively unspoiled and it contains large areas of raffia palm swamp, flooded forest and lagoons. Fingers of high ground, thickly clad in rain forest, permeate this area. The delta of the Rio Sierpe, which it shares with the Rio Terraba, is the most extensive area of mangrove swamp in Costa Rica and largest in Latin America (almost 50% of all the mangrove wetland of the country). This swamp is permeated by a maze of channels in which it is easy to become lost! The eight species of mangrove found here are some of the tallest in the world – red, black, grey, and tea mangroves being the most common varieties. The impressive mangroves provide a valuable coastal ecosystem to an abundance of avian, mammalian, reptilian and aquatic animals. Birding enthusiasts come from all over the globe to experience the area’s phenomenal birdwatching opportunities. Both resident and migratory birds visit these swamps, which also boast two endemic hummingbird species: the mangrove hummingbird and the yellow-billed cotinga. On the coastal fringe of this delta, near the mouth of the Rio Sierpe, lies Violin Island. Sir Francis Drake reputedly buried a large treasure here. The many attempts to find this treasure have met with no success. However, Violin Island has yielded many gold nuggets of one or more kilos in weight. CAÑO ISLAND BIOLOGICAL RESERVE Located 12 miles of the western coast of the Osa Peninsula, Caño Island is 300 hectares in area with 5,800 hectares of Sea included in the Reserve. While the Island itself is home to relatively few animals and plants, its surrounding waters abound with marine life: colourful reef fish, impressive schools of large pelagic fish, manta rays, sharks, turtles, whales and dolphins. Caño Island is second only to Coco Island in the quality of its diving in Costa Rica. Costa Rica not only offers some of the best sport fishing in the world, it delivers as well. With over 44 line class records, 14 fly records, and 18 all-tackle records, the fishing experience here is nothing short of a bona fide phenomena ;Sailfish, Black marlin, Blue marlin,Yellow fin tuna,Albacore,Grouper,Pargo,Pomano,Dorado,Wahoo all had to be caught has given this land its claim to fame!
