GRUZ MARKET --- copy from magazine, Gruz market is 200 m away from my apartment.

Last updated on Saturday, 05 October 2013
The favorite place for locals to buy fresh meat, vegetables and more importantly - this morning's fish!
The open-air market in Gruz is a vibrant, busy market where everyone comes to buy fresh ingredients for today's lunch or dinner. Gruz market is mainly known as a fish market, where you can buy fresh fish that just came in from the sea, off the fishing boats.
If you are staying in Dubrovnik for a few days in an apartment, take a walk in the morning to Gruz market, buy some fresh fish, shrimps, squids or an octopus and go for a great dinner! While you are there, fresh vegetables from local farmers are also available.
While there are parking spots in a vicinity, don't get your hopes up, taking a walk or a local bus is a much better choice!
Gruz market has been completely renovated in 2013 and is now up to the highest European standards. Fish is no longer sold in plastic crates, but will be sold on the ice, which meets the European standards. It now also has the facilities for washing and cleaning the fish.
Some stands already open around 6:30 in the morning, but most off the just before 8:00 o'clock when the locals start /shopping/. In the summer the working hours are longer, approximately until 15:00 with the flower stands working even later. Of course, the earlier you get there, the better.

Furthermore within 200m distance from the apartment you can find lot of useful facilities, if you enter in photo section of surrounding area I made, most you can see, along with brand new fish market, and green grocery fresh market, and children play ground in the park among other things:

Huge shopping mall, post office, banks, two ambulances and pharmacy ,numerous cafee bars and restaurants, shops, many agencies providing daily trips to local nearby islands with beautiful beaches, if guest desired so, which are not so crowded as ones on mainland.

Small government owned agency "Jadrolinija" ships are leaving several times per day to nearby Elaphiti islands: Kolocep, Lopud, and Sipan: journey takes some 30 minutes to 1 hour depend which island you choose to visit.
Ships docked about 100m from apartment and departure/arrive for those beautiful Elaphite islands several times per day .
Islands are beautifull with sand beaches and are covered by thick Dalmatian pine forest trees. Ticket prices are very reasonable and it is very popular destinations to move away from crowded mainland beaches for local populations and many tourists as well.
In the afternoon or later you are back, or before., as you choose, by same ship to city.
You can find out more on internet if you type in Elaphite islands : Kolocep, Lopud, Sipan islands of Elaphiti group close to Gruz harbor.
Place where ships are berthed and depart/arr. is called "Gruz" harbor.

Close are also agencies providing daily excursions to Dubrovnik countryside and Medjugorje, Mostar, Monte Negro etc are within this radius and rent a car and scooters agencies as well.

Mega yachts marina pier is neighboring ship`s berth, and is nice promenade place along huge moored big yachts.
Inter city bus station 200 hundred meters away, serve also as coming and departing place for airport shuttle buses, of Dubrovnik airport 22 km away.

Guests coming by plane I pick up with my car at the bus station, without any extra charge and within 1 minutes by car drive you are at my apartment.

Also there is ferry port berth about 90 meters away for guests coming by ferry boat from Italy or other Croatian sea ports or islands.

If You are coming by your own car from the west there is big Dubrovnik bridge 70m high at the W- side approach to the city, bridge is spanning long bay so you can spare about 15 km driving, across bridge instead around a long bay.

On the bridge is parking place to enjoy view and make some photos of harbor with huge passenger cruising ships calling Dubrovnik in season.
When you pass bridge, you actually enter the city, distance to my apartment is about 1 km and it is easy to drive to my apartment, I will explain you all, data by E-mail when booking is done.

Driving by car or bus to old city from my apartment will take you some 5 to 10 minutes, till city entrance as in the old city cars are not allowed except emergency ones only..
It is much more convenient if you come by car or rent it here to leave it on my private parking and for
destinations within city use transportation air condition excellent bus services. Bus ticket cost 1.5 euro.

Parking around old city for example cost 2 euro, but place is almost impossible to find except at very early morning time, there is on the other hand huge underground garage 200 metres above old city where 1 hour of parking cost 3 euro, and you have to walk to old city down the steps but on the way back in summer heat it is same way but then uphill, which can be exhausting experience in summer months.
Dubrovnik and old town is situated under hill "Srdj" and it is not uncommon to have to climb more the 500 to 1000 steps until you reach apartment you choose.
It is true that view is amazing but also in summer heat you have to make that journey few times per day, to beach and back, and in the night to city ect.
Most of the city houses are on top of some hills as well with hundred steps to climb. To reach my apartment you can drive your car straight till entrance and park it there next to entrance door which is my private parking and I suggest my guests to leave car there at my parking, if they are going to old city and use public transportation buses, which stops 30m from apartment.
It is more convenient then circle around old city struggling to find parking, but that is impossible anyway, but tow away fines for wrong parking are huge.
Anyway Dubrovnik is not big city from western entrance to eastern end is about 2.5 miles and most places can be reached in 10-15 minutes by city buses.
To reach my apartment walking you have exactly 3 stairs to climb not more. Prices in old city they keep high, and when you add to it car parking fee if you come with car, think about it carefully when planning your vacation.

Gruz region where apartment is positioned is Dubrovnik harbor for passenger ships, it is situated on the western entrance to the city, and is berth for huge passsengers ship˙s visiting annualy city as one of the top ten destinations in the world .Ships can be seen from my apartment balcony, berthed in the harbor.
Climate in Dubrovnik is excellent, also in winter months, it is place with most sunny days in all Adriatic coast and Croatia as well, with temperatures in summer reaching more then 30°C, where one can fully enjoy benefits of this paradise.
Besides, although it is hot in summer, there is usually blowing some slight to moderate NW wind locally called Maestral, bringing nice sea cool breeze during day and vanishing with sun set completely, and making stay on the open sun as very nice and comfortable experience.

On July 10th famous Dubrovnik festival, take place and last up to 25th August. World greatest artists perform great events consisting of classic music, theatrical drama performances on the open places in the old city, such as Lovrjenac Fort which raises on 37 metres ( 1129 feet) high sea cliff outside the city walls as perfect location for Shakespeare`s Hamlet being performed there.
One can approach it from the little "Pile" beach climbing the flight of stairs in the shadow of pine trees.
The people of Dubrovnik built the Fort in order to protect western sea access to the city, particularly from the Venetian fleet.
The construction began in 1018 and was completed in the 16th century. The thickness of the walls facing sea is between 4 and 12 meters. Above the entrance is an inscription in Latin Language: NON BENE PRO TOTO LIBERTAD VENDITUR AURO ( Freedom is not sold for all the gold of the world).
The fort houses a chapel of St. Lawrence, and its courtyard with a cistern serves as a magical venue for theatrical performances. A large number of plays had been performed here within the Dubrovnik summer festival program. Compared with Elsinore, Lovrjenac Fort has become the perfect world famous setting for Shakespeare˙s Hamlet. The fort is open for visitors as well.

Wish you pleasant stay in Dubrovnik and I hope that above data will help you a bit to choose right place which suits you best.
