Area Information
The picturesque resort of Duck has a split personality. On one hand it's a sleepy hamlet ideal for families craving a quiet beach vacation. Delightful cottages fill the village from sea to sound; there are no hotels and only one B & B. Duck's lively side also boasts activities galore. The sound side waterfront area features para sailing, kayak and jet ski rentals, plus sailing and windsurfing outfitters. The bike path running the length of the village is traveled with early morning exercisers, tots on bikes and inline skaters. The entire area is a fisherman's paradise from convenient shoreline fishing to full day ocean excursions out to the Gulf Stream for the really big ones. Take in some serious crabbing from the sound pier adjacent to your home, visit the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse or see the site of the Wright brothers first flight. You may want to take in the Lost Colony outdoor drama under the stars. You can set off in search of the wild Spanish mustangs of Corolla sometimes spotted frolicking on the shore or maybe take the free ferry to Ocracoke Island to hunt down Blackbeard's pirates. Here on the Outer Banks, there's something to do for everyone. Or if you prefer, do nothing at all but kick back, relax and enjoy that glorious Outer Banks sunset!

Needs a facelift

October 10, 2014

It is a lovely house but needs updating. The decks were in dire need of repair and paint or sealant. The house also needs to be painted. It is a great house for a large extended family or a number of families. Great location. Just needs some cosmetic work.

A wonderful place!

July 27, 2014

We had a wonderful, relaxing vacation. The house was perfect for us and our family. Though the water heater conked out one afternoon, it was replaced the next morning by 10am! We loved the view of the sound... the best way to start the morning with a cup of coffee! The grand-kids loved the pool (as did we), and the town of Duck was lots of fun. Hurricane Arthur came and went. The house was buttoned down... no leaks, loss of power, etc. Very well built! We look forward to coming back for many years!

Thumbs Down

August 13, 2012

Unfortunately we did not have a good experience with this house. Not suited for kids. Deck in disrepair, dangerous nail pops, swing coming out of rafter. Very dirty throughout, animal hair all over, linens, pillows and kitchen ware have not been replaced in years. Mildew in bathrooms. Microwave didn't work. Save yourself the aggravation and find another house.

Doggie Vacation

July 26, 2011

Our vacation planning certainly started off a little rocky when a friend offered us their vacation home at a great price that we could even bring our dogs to. Within a few weeks the deal had fallen though and we never thought we would find another deal that good in such a short amount of time. WE WERE WRONG! We found the deal of a lifetime with Life's a Joy! My family, my boyfriend, and our dogs immediately fell in love with the house and the owners friendliness and accommodating ways. We went kayaking, crabbing, walking, biking, BBQing, swimming, sun bathing, boogie boarding, star gazing, and slept soundly by the sound in the cool comfort of Life's a Joy in Duck, N.C. on those hot summer nights. Our dogs loved the sunrise walks on the beach and the boardwalk in Duck and our family loved the great movie selection at the house. We will definitely will be interested in staying in this affordable and beautifully accommodating home again soon! -Bethany and Mark

We thought it was great that there were tons of patio furniture. We could all sit at the pool & relax or have dinner, sit on the upstairs rockers & picnic table for coffee in the morning, etc! Thank-you for all your help in making our vacation such a success! Courtney Schroeder

A huge thank you for providing such a wonderful place for us to spend our family vacation. The house was absolutely perfect - we had plenty of space, and everyone fully enjoyed all decks and the pool. It was really a perfect place for everyone, and we wanted you to know how much we appreciated it really fitting all of our needs (close to Duck, beach, pool, etc). Thanks again, and we will keep the house in mind for future vacations! Katherine Shea

A Great Week

This is a great home. It was clean and met all our needs. Great views and decks. We were three 50+ couples that enjoy cooking and the kitchen had everything we needed. The community was wonderful with short drives to supermarket( that was spotless as well). We are all from the South Shore of Long Island so we are spoiled by our beaches but were very pleased to visit the ocean. The week we were there the temperatures were in the upper nineties so we made good use of the pool. It was clean and well maintained.
Highly recommend it

Fabulous property

Right from the beginning the owners of the property were very accommodating answering my numerous questions. This set my mind at ease renting from folks that I didn't know and a property that I haven't personally seen. The house sits between the sound and the ocean and both are easily within walking distance. You have a great view of both from the deck. We went crabbing a few times while we were there which was a blast. The pier is only about 1/4 mile from the home if that. The house itself is wonderful. It is beautiful and very well maintained. I went with my family but it easily could accommodate more then 4 individuals. We were also very appreciative that we could bring our dogs, Willow and Jasmine. They thoroughly enjoyed the vacation with their family. For vactioners who don't have pets, you would never know pets stayed at the house. The cleaning service does a fantastic job. The home is spotless. The kitchen is fully equipped and I can't think of a thing you would need to bring. The owners have a large TV in the living room and TV's in all of the bedrooms. They also have a large selection of movies and board games. Plenty of things to do in the evening or if you get a rainy day. The pool is a wonderful addition and it is also very clean and well maintained. All in all it was a great property and a good value. I would highly recommend this property for your vacation. It has everything you could possibly want or need.

Pet Friendly and quiet

Thisis a beautiful house with a terrifc pool. It is very clean and includes everything you will need for anenjoyable vacation, It is set in a quiet cul-se-sac on the soundside. The walkway to the sound pier is only about 200 feet away. It is centrally located and the pet-firendly Duck beaches are a 2 minute drive across the road. My family and I had a great time, and our dog enjoyed himself fully. You won't find many, in any, beaches around the country that allow dogs to walk unleashed ( but supervised) on the beach. We chose Duck for this reason, and we chose this house for the pet-friendly designation. Neither disappointed. We highly recommend it.

Breathtaking water views

We have stayed at many places on the Outer Banks and this by far has been the best. The house was clean and relaxing. A real beach cottage!! The sunroom was just a great place to view the beautiful sound and relax with the family. We had one rainy day and were entertained watching the storm roll in from the sound. We all had turns napping on the deck hammock. The close proximity to the dock was a favorite as we love to crab and fish....and an easy walk or ride to the beach or into town. The pool was clean and refreshing as it was a hot week!
The house was equipped with everything we need and we really appreciated being able to bring our dogs.....they had a vacation with the family too.
What a beautiful home! Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful experience staying here! Home is immaculate & clean, nicely furnished, and has amazing water views. Sunroom is breath taking! Nice floor plan with the living area on the upper level with expansive decks and great views in every direction. Loved the private pool which was crystal clear and well maintained. Our kids used the bikes daily and also had scooters which we didn't even know about. House is very private yet close to the ocean and town of Duck. We'll be back! Thanks!!
