About the area

Burke is right in the heart of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, an area renowned for it's pristine beauty, "real" Vermont lifestyle and fantastic recreational opportunities. Here you will find Burke Mountain Ski Area and the Kingdom Trails recreational network, voted one of the Top Ten trail systems in the world by the International Mountain Biking Association. This is a great place for those who love alpine or X-C skiing, snow-shoeing, mountain biking, hiking and getting close to nature. It is also a place for people who love fine dining, antiques, boutique shopping, living history, classic Vermont country scenery and the quintessential New England Village charm of yesteryear. Within easy driving distance to the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, the Catamount Arts Theater, Vermont Children's Theater, Trout River Brewery, the Vermont Leadership Center and the Nulhegan Basin Recreation Area. Close to Lyndon State College, Burke Mountain Academy, Lyndon Institute, St. Johnsbury Academy and the town of St. Johnsbury, Lake Willoughby, Crystal Lake and Newark Pond, and only an hour from Monpelier (Vermont's State Capital) and an hour from the Canadian border with French-speaking Quebec. There is so much to see and do here!

“What a wonderful place away from it all!”

My husband and I stayed at Heart Winds House last month and absolutely fell in love with the place! The whole house is lovingly decorated by its hosts and makes you feel comfortable and right at home! It has a well equipped kitchen (even has an espresso machine!) and a beautiful breakfast nook! We especially enjoyed the wood burning stove in the cozy living room and loved our big king size bed in the Maple Room - never slept better!! Watch for the deer to come out of the woods to graze in the meadow at dusk and keep your eyes open, as you might even spot a bear or moose! There is a lot of nature around Heart Winds House and we wish we would have had more time to explore! Very quiet and relaxing! The perfect retreat from your day to day hustle and bustle! We'll be back for sure!

Owner's reply: We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit and hope you come back soon!

“Fabulous find!”

We happened upon this house for a wedding in the same town, and what a great place it is. I am not sure what we would have done in the town if we did not have a wedding there, but the home stay was fantastic! The house is private, on 50 acres and down a long driveway. It is really charming - spacious, spotlessly clean, light and airy and very cozy. The owners, Francesca and David were great - nice, down to earth, and so hospitable. We had the two bedrooms on the first floor (sharing a bathroom) to ourselves, and they slept upstairs. They were available, but not in our face, super fun to talk to, and went out of our way to make us comfortable. They had a welcome pack for us, made a delicious breakfast, and had tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies/biscuits for us throughout the day if we wanted. They made a lovely wood fire for us at night and gave helpful tips on dining and activity. The house is well depicted in the pictures, we saw wild turkeys in the yard which was great. We stayed 2 nights, and were not at the house too much, but what a fantastic place to come back to, and what great hosts. Would definitely stay there again if circumstances brought me to the local area.

“Beautiful Burke Property”

This was the perfect property for the group (8-10 people) getaway I so throughly enjoyed! The open concept allows for ample room to gather yet the house also has a great amount of separate rooms to spread out and enjoy your own space. There is nothing better than basking in the sun on the enclosed porch or on the open deck overlooking the beautiful (and private) open meadow! I can't wait to plan to rent this property again.

“Womens Retreat”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2010

Spent an amazing weekend at this amazing property with very amazing women! This home is so open and spacious that a handful of women and all of their stuff had plenty of room. Cooking space is magnificent with much room for grand meals to be prepared and served. Sleeping in the sun room tracking the moon's journey across the sky and waking to the sunshine was very cozy. Hope to make this an annual visit. Francesca was so utterly accomodating!

“Peaceful Paradise!!”

My womens group stayed at this beautiful house for a weekend retreat. We were looking for peace, beauty, immersion in nature and all of the comforts of warm beds and a big kitchen for our evening dinners. This house exceeded our wildest dreams and expectations! This is one of the most beautiful homes I have ever seen. It is cozy and comfortable, and also open, large and in the middle of a gorgeous field, with views of Burke Mountain. The kitchen is large and perfect for cooking with friends, while others sip wine and entertain the cooks. The sun room is amazing -- beautiful cathedral ceilings and glass, with views on the expansive field. Flowers, a beautiful large deck, and a network of trails right out of the front door. Many beds and a jacuzzi bath! We could not have hoped for a better experience. Thank you!!

“Heaven on earth . . .”

I typically travel to the North East Kingdom to mountain bike. A year ago, I decided to stay for a week and while searching for rentals, I found this enchanted hidden treasure on the Kingdom Trails website. It is now, they ONLY place I stay when I visit. This magnificent house is quietly tucked away at the base of Burke Mt. Surrounded by fields and trees, it is secluded, private, peaceful and more than anyone could ask for. Wildlife sightings everyday! The house has this great open floor plan and is very spacious. The kitchen is awesome and well stocked with cooking tools. The sunroom and the deck are both great places to sit and enjoy morning coffee! If you are in the area to bike, it is less then two miles to the KT upper parking lot on Darling Hill. If you prefer to ride the Burke Mountain trails, the KT network connects right at the end of the driveway (Kirby connector) I highly recommend it to anyone visiting!
