Description from owner

Located on the western shore of Lake Keewaydin on a very quiet, private road, the cottage has a beautiful, open view across Lake Keewaydin to the east that provides beautiful sunrises or great evening viewing with backlighting that illuminates the mountains on the far shore. Many people who have stayed at the cottage remark at how pleasant and relaxing it is to either sip coffee on the dock in the morning sun; sit on the porch while they read, relax or socialize; and listen to the cry of the loons at any time of the day. Each year a pair of loons lives by the lake.

The cottage has a living room with stereo, sitting/TV/reading room, full bath with shower, and complete kitchen on the first floor. It has two bedrooms on the second floor - one with a double bed and the other with twin beds. A small, comfortable, single sleeping area is found under the staircase. It is heated by a substantial propane wall-mounted heater. The kitchen is fully equipped and complete with a gas stove, large refrigerator, sink and abundant counter areas and cabinets. It is surrounded on two sides by a large covered porch, with a 16-foot portion completely enclosed by screens. In addition, there is a very cozy, separate, Scandinavian-type bunk house close to the lake that contains two bunk beds, seating and a small, private porch - ideal for children or to just gain privacy. Outside, there is ample room for play by the lake, with a barbeque pit, gas grill, hammock and area for a horse-shoe game.

The cottage comes complete with a new DSL/WiFi connection, a canoe, two kayaks,a dock and a swimming float - assuring a great time by the lake. During the months of July and August, the lake water temperature near the surface is typically very comfortable - ranging from 74 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on whether there has been a great deal of warm weather, sun, wind and/or rain. The water is very clean because the leak is fed by streams from the mountains. Very few motorboats (only a few on weekends) and several conoes and kayaks use the lake. However, jet skis are not allowed on the lake. Many renters have had excellent fishing luck in the lake, where several large bass and trout have been caught. Therefore, the lake assures a unique experience and a range of opportunities to have a fun and relaxing vacation.

Beds: 1 Double Bed, 4 Twin Beds, 2 Sofa Beds

About the area

The cottage is located about 2 miles from the center of the town of Stoneham, Maine, with its general store, and a mile from wilderness hiking trails. Lake Keewaydin is located in the mountains of Western Maine, within a 40-minute drive of North Conway, NH (and the shopping outlets) and less than one hour from Mount Washington, the highest point in the northeastern US and the Presidential Range of mountains. The Appalachian Trail is within a 30-minute drive. The Eastern portion of the White Mountain National Forest and its abundant hiking trails is located within less than one mile of the cottage (it starts across the lake). In addition, there are private paths and hiking trails throughout the region. Two public golf courses can be found within a 15 to 20-minute drive, one in Norway (9 holes) and another in Lovell (18 holes). One of the most unusual, fun pubs in the Northeast is adjacent to the second green of the Lake Kezar Country Club in Lovell. Within a 20-minute drive is the famous Deertrees Theater (summer playhouse), located in Harrison, Maine. This theater has a continuous stream of top-notch entertainment and plays during the summer months. There are several inns in the region that provide excellent dining experiences. The cottage has been found to be an ideal place for quiet relaxation or a convenient location for an active life of mountain swimming, boating, biking, walking or hiking.

“Awesome place for families!”

Reviewed 3 Aug 2014

This cabin is the quintessential of a summer week on a Maine lake. It's quaint sense-of-place set the stage for a week of total relaxation and fun. We love the screened-in porch for hours of reading and all of our meals! The lake was crystal clear and refreshing; we could see the bottom of the lake when we kayaked. We also hiked and explored the beautiful Maine mountains. The wild blueberries were delicious; the mountaintop views, stunning! In the evenings, we read aloud Thoreau's "Maine Woods". It was our daughter's request, to spend a week on a lake in Maine following her graduation from high school. We couldn't have picked a better place - simple, beautiful and unforgettable. Thank you!

“As advertised, the way it should be...”

We have been staying at this particular lake for 20 years and this is the first time we rented this cottage. It is by far the best camp we have rented and we plan on going back as often as possible. It is clean, comfortable and very, very private. The owner is very pleasant and accommodating. The view is one of the best on the lake and everything you need to have a great vacation is included in the cottage (canoe, kayaks, outdoor fire pit and gas grill). The fishing right off the dock is great! I recommend this place without qualification.

Owner's reply: The renters were outstanding. They were very helpful, humorous, respectful of the environment, and cleaned the cottage very well as you departed. It's very gratifying to see people who enjoy the woods and lake as much as I do. Bill (the owner)

“Fun Times”

Reviewed 12 Aug 2013

If you are looking for a small pristine lake perfect for canoeing, kayaking, sailing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking or just plain relaxing with a gorgeous view of the lake this is a perfect rental. The cottage is vintage Maine with pine paneling, comfortable furniture, large screen porch, fully functional kitchen and bath. The best feature is its privacy as it is surrounded by acres of woods and one of the longest shorelines on the lake. If you are looking for modern plastic and large screen TVs this is not the place. The swimming off the dock and float are excellent. The lake which is around a mile in radius is perfect with only a few motor boats and no jet skis allowed. We spent two weeks and could have spent another two easily. Towns for shopping (Norway, Bethel, and Fryeburg) are all within a 20 minute drive with a bevy of fine restaurants or fast food and groceries. So to sum it up a perfect spot for us for outdoor activities, reading and relaxing and exploring the surrounding attractions such as the White Mountains and Coast of Maine.

Owner's reply: As property owner, I enjoyed the Savoy family immensely. The parents and two older children were great fun and left the cottage in pristine condition. Bill Vachon

We have been going to Maine for years and have never had a better cottage! Place lived up to everything we hoped, from the great screened porch to bunk house, our family loved it.

“Excellent vacation”

We really enjoyed our time here--the lake was the perfect temperature for swimming and it was nice to have our own private dock. Canoeing in the evening was relaxing, and there are some very nice hikes only a short drive away. The cottage is also a cozy, plesaant place to spend some time...very well equipped and homey. Highly recommended!

Owner Supplied Testimonials

We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing time by the lake. I read four books in one week and slept like a baby for the first time in years. The sounds of the loons at night are enchanting.

I have not been so relaxed in years. The quiet of the woods and the sounds of the birds is such a change from my normal life. We would love to own such a neat place.
