Description from owner

Discover the charm of this 19th Century German Victorian villa. The oldest on Elkhart Lake, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this lodge has been restored to its original beauty and is available for rental.

Beds: 1 King Bed, 1 Double Bed, 9 Twin Beds, 1 Crib

About the area

Elkhart Lake is one of the most beautiful in WI yet only an hour from Milwaukee and 2.5 hours from Chicago. The lake is spring fed, deep and clean. In summer, all water sports are allowed though Sundays are blessedly quiet with no motor boats allowed. (One can actually swim from one end of the lake to the other.) In winter, cross country skiing or skating on the lake is a great pastime. The Village of Elkhart Lake boasts a number of fine eateries. Kohler, Wisconsin is a 15 minute drive and is home to some of the most important golf venues in the country. The Kettle Moraine runs right through the area for wonderful hiking and more cross country skiing. The Sheboygan Marsh is a treasure of bird life.

“Accommodating historical home”

Reviewed 24 Aug 2015

The Overflow was perfectly accommodating for our large and active family for the week right on our beloved Elkhart Lake. The private house was more than enough room for 13 of us (ages 18-78!) to spread out on three levels and multiple porches, deck and dock. The historical house is absolutely charming in its true the turn of the century decor. Loved the large table off back kitchen porch for big family meals and evening games! Never missed TV! We biked, hiked and boated entire week right out the back door!

“Historical Cottage Experience”

Reviewed 30 Sep 2014

From the moment you step into this cottage you will immediately take a step back into the time when entire families moved into the cottage for the summer. The rooms of the cottage are filled with memorabilia from as far back as the early1900's. You will find yourselves wandering throughout the cottage marveling at the décor. Be sure to sign and read the guestbook. I would also suggest that you read about the family in the book "Every word is True" there are several copies of the book located in the rooms around the house. The book is filled with short stories of Garton Family (as in the Sheboygan based company) "The Garton Toy Factory". There are antique toys displayed in the downstairs game room that may remind you of the toys you may have had as a child. There is plenty of space for all. The six bedrooms were more than enough for our group of 10. There are three bathrooms, one on each of the floors. The real treasure is the view of Elkhart Lake, which you can experience from the large front porch or from the top of the restored boathouse. The boathouse has a large seating are where you can all easily gather to take in the breath taking view of the lake. There is fishing equipment stored below if you wish to cast a line into the lake. I would highly suggest that you take advantage of the two person kayak that is available. It is the best way to appreciate the beauty of lake. If you prefer to relax, you can pick a spot on one of the lounge chairs on the boathouse deck. There is a walking path that will take you directly into the town of Elkhart. It is an enjoyable walk of about a mile. The house is very nostalgic for anyone who was born in the 1940's to the 1960's. There is no dishwasher, we found a certain charm in reliving how we used to do things when we were young. It brought back many memories and made for good conversation among us. There is also no internet or television. We found that to be refreshing. So, if you are looking for a place to reconnect with family or friends, this would definitely be the place for you. It is a perfect place to experience the natural beauty of the lake, reflect on life and share some real quality time.

Owner's reply: Hello: Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. You have said so beautifully exactly what we have tried to do with this cottage: honor the past, create possibilities for family fun, and treasure our beautiful lake. My kids and I are thrilled that you enjoyed it so much! Happy Fall!! D Garton

“Exquisite 19th century home”

Reviewed 6 Sep 2014

Stone stairs with no railings up to the house and down to the boathouse and water, as well as the wood stairs up or down to a bath with shower were a bit of a challenge for our elder guests as well as for toddlers, and the barely 20th century kitchen can be a challenge too, but the place is simply worth it for the elegance, beauty, peace, charm and history. We stayed a week, hosted 2 couples for 2 nights each so the washer/dryer was a great bonus. Other family members came for a day of water fun. Everyone, young and old, hopes we do it again next year! We enjoyed the path around the lake and into town. Nice restaurants, coffee shop, art gallery.

“Great spot to get away!”

Thanks to the Overflow LLC crew for providing a wonderful location for our race team to spend our time away from the track. The house is very large and accommodating. We had a great time sitting by the lake in the evenings and mornings enjoying the great weather.

Owner's reply: Thanks so much for the kind words!

“Great Vacation House on the Lake”

Reviewed 17 Jul 2012

Perfect location on Elkhart Lake with wonderful decks overlooking the water. The house is wonderfully restored and easily sleeps 12. My family friends and I just had a spectacular time there while participating in a race weekend at Road America. It was everything we hoped for. We will certainly be back.

Owner's reply: It was wonderful to have you. We will be happy to welcome you back any time.

“A step back in time”

This home has much charm and provided our family with a most restful, restorative, and memorable vacation. We spent relaxing hours on the wrap around porch reading or conversing with friends and family. The dock provided fun for the water lovers with rides in the kayak and hanging out by the water. The rooms were lovely with furniture and decorations that took you back to an earlier time in the early 20th century. We truly felt time slow down and we relaxed, truly relaxed. The short walk into town was also scenic and gave us a nice stretch of the legs to justify that extra scoop of ice cream at Gesserts or Siebkins. We walked around the lake, biked the area, golfed, swam, canoed, kayaked, played tennis, roller bladed and all in all found many ways to fill the hours without television or cell phones. Thanks again for this amazing get-away. We can't wait for our return visit.

“Major changes at the Overflow this year!”

Reviewed 27 Jul 2011

This year a whole new floor and air conditioning! We needed it having spent the hottest week in the year at the total comfort. The owner put in geo-thermal heating and airconditioning and lifted up the house to put in a new basement which has a new washer drier, another shower and bath and a lot of recreational space. Other changes, a king size bed in the master bedroom and a double in the second bedroom on the first floor. All is as beautifully kept and there is new landscaping outside. We have been coming for about 15 years or more and have seen a lot of changes and the occasional appearance of Clara (or so the children say). Thank you Deirdre. Four generations of Posners have all loved the lake house--with and without air....

“storybook perfect”

What a great surprise; things never seem as promised on the internet, but in the case of Villa Von Baumbach, it was far better than expected. What a great and pleasant surprise. The owners have lavished much TLC on this antique cottage. Our stay was like a step back in time, with the only regrets being that we had not enough time to enjoy it and the lake even more. The porch is amazing, and the frozen mugs in the freezer were a nice surprise. The house lacked for nothing, with a well stocked kitchen, brand new Weber grill, Kayak and row boat. Thanks, Deirdre for making our trip to Elkhart a memorable one.

“Perfect family Gathering”

Reviewed 3 Sep 2008

The house was wonderful! The lake was beautiful! Great for swimming and boating. Our family of 12 adults and 2 babies were accomodated very well. We even had 2 people sleep in the boathouse! Location was perfect for a wedding reception we attended in Elkhart Lake. We could have used more towels, and only having 1 bathroom with a shower was a little difficult, but we made it work.(1 bath has only a small tub) There actually were only 9 twin beds and we were counting on 10. The house was very clean and well maintained. The owner was very helpful and available for any thing we needed. Would love to come again sometime! I recommend adding a second fridge and a microwave.

“Lovely Lake Victorian”

Reviewed 23 Oct 2007

This gracious home had all we needed for a long family weekend. The furniture is all vintage and gorgeous. Be prepared to be cozy if you are sharing a double bed! The only newer things are appliances and we found everything most adaquate for our cooking events - it was like turning back the clock! The gazebo/boat house was delightful for lunch and lounging.
