Description of the Figure Eight Island vacation home rental
Our house is on a secluded private island, on a deep water sound with a sandy beach and a dock which can accommodate a 30’ boat. It is directly across the street from the ocean. The waters are very clean and clear so you can fish and clam right off the dock. We are ardent conservationists and have managed to preserve the natural vegetation around the house. There is a very nice maritime forest surrounding the house as well as sea oats and beach grasses. The birding around the house is fabulous and we have many fall visitors who come just to bird watch. Surf fishing is very good because of a slew that has been there for at least 30 years. A boat ramp on the island is nearby so please use the dock that is shared by the owner and friends. Renters are not allowed to bring jet skis on the island.

Paul and CoCo Foster built the Bay House in 1975 on Figure 8 Island near Wilmington, North Carolina. It is a small, rustic and cozy home that has been recognized for its outstanding design to resist hurricanes. The foundation poles go all the way to the roof and have kept the house from being damaged from the many hurricanes we have recently had. The house has 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. It also has a warm water outside shower that is the most popular bathing area in the summer. The bay is a perfect swimming hole for kids with a nice sandy beach and the ocean beach access is directly across the street from the house. The kitchen is fully equipped including a microwave and a complete set of cookware. The porch railings are strong but do not conform to current code. Please look at the photos closely to make sure they are acceptable.

The Bay house is bright and clean and very relaxed. This is not a luxury home, but a functional beach house. Sandy toes are not a problem! Smoking is permitted outside, but must be carefully controlled because of the high winds and fire hazards. We have had several houses burn down on the island because of cigarette butts left burning in the sand or porch.

Figure Eight Island, just north of Wilmington North Carolina, is a private island and gated community, assessable only by land owners and their guests. There are no public facilities on the island. It has the only privately owned bridge over the intracoastal waterway. We have clean and white sandy beaches with blue green ocean water with have multiple turtle hatchings every year on the island. The beach is not crowded since the public is not allowed on the island.

The Bay House is available in all seasons, including November through May in the winter, as a monthly rental for our snowbird friends. We encourage our Canadian friends to come and stay for a 3-4 month winter rental. Figure 8 Island is a secluded island frequented by celebrities and politicians.

Please note: We are members of Friends of Felines and we support a small colony of feral cats to help keep the beach mice at bay. They tend to wander about the maritime forest but are afraid of humans. We tend to them very well and they are fed in the woods every day.
Area Information
Figure 8 Island is within 10 miles of Wilmington NC. Wilmington is a small town famous for it's culture. It has the first theater in NC and has a delightfull downtown area often called a mini Charlestown.

Excellent Beach Retreat

August 24, 2010

Excellent retreat! Not so modern (of course all the modern conveniences), but just the sort of original style beach house I was looking for. Our hosts were very gracious and and accommodating - I would recommend the Bay House and will be staying again!

Great Views and Dock

March 6, 2010

The Bay House offers great views from the deck of this wonderful beach cottage. The house is clean and well-maintained. We loved having access to the dock for a boat or kayaks, which got us to the adjacent tidal marsh. Service from the owners was great - there were even fresh flowers in the house upon our arrival!

Neat Bay House

March 1, 2010

My wife and I had a wonderful stay while I was doing some business in Wilmington. The owners were very accommodating and made us feel very welcome. House was quaint, one of first built on island, with true rough beach house kind of feel. We would recommend highly.
