Florentine Elegance in Historic Santa Croce
From $193 / night
Pets allowed: No
The main part of this building was registered in the 'Comune' as a convent in the 12th century and renovations and additions have been made throughout the centuries. It is probably part of the surge of the Dominican and Franciscan convents, monasteries, and churches that took over the Santa Croce area in the 12th century.
Recently, on a visit to Leonardo Da Vinci's hilltop town of Vinci, west of Florence, I discovered that he first came to work for the well-known sculptor Andrea Del Verrocchio. To my surprise, the workshop was located on the corner of Via Ghibellina and the street that is now called Via Dei Macci. That would be just below our apartment, at the corner. To be sure, every stone in Florence has a story to tell...every stone, every corner, every medieval alley.
Our apartment is on the third floor (no elevator), going up a wide staircase made of pietra serena, a local Florentine stone, with a hand wrought iron railing. The stairs are low and manageable with a large landing at each level.
The architect who restored this apartment cleaned through several layers of paint and grime to reveal the original ceiling frescoes in the living room and applied paints to the rest of the house accordingly. Faux finishes on the walls complement the Florentine colors of the frescoes on the airy, high ceilings of the living room.
You'll find beautiful parquet floors to pad around in after a day of walking around Florence. There is a hand-painted, built-in in the corner of the living room with its matching console. An ancient hand-carved marble sink found in the building serves as a sink in the kitchen striking a distinct contrast to the gleaming white Carrara marble countertop. Some ceiling light fixtures feature Venetian Murano glass or other locally blown glass.
The bedroom lamps were custom-made by local Florentine artisans in the Renaissance tradition. The antique doors to every room are restored and curiously stand on their hinges in the manner of many doors of 'old' buildings in the area such as Cibreo's (a nearby restaurant), for example. The apartment is decorated with a few antique pieces.
The bedrooms are spacious and sunlit with suite bathrooms. The master bathroom has a bathtub with towel warmer. Both bathrooms are en suite bathrooms and bidets. In addition, there is a hallway powder room.
The heavy walnut dining room table can easily seat six persons. There are table linens, placemats, and table protectors for it.
In the kitchen you will find everything you need to create a gourmet meal, (including all the basic staples), if that is what you like to do. There are even cookbooks in case you really want to experiment with some of the great ingredients you will find in the Sant'Ambrogio market just around the corner from the house.
The neighborhood is colorful, full of great restaurants such as the famous Cibreo, as well as a produce, dairy and meat market,(Sant'Ambrogio) and antique and artisan shops. It is minutes away from everything. After you're done sightseeing, arrange dinner reservations at Enoteca Pinchiorri, said to be one of the top 10 restaurants in the world, on the same street as the apartment, 5 minutes away. Or simply walk across the street to Dino's, a favorite of our guests.
Finally, walk 'home' to a hot bath to rest your tired feet before sliding into crisp pressed linens for the night.
We have a local landline for you to use for your local calls and we also have an American phone from which you will be able to make free long distance calls.

Tastefully decorated with antiques, very large rooms, spacious dining/living room combo and two very large bedrooms (the photos do not do them justice). The kitchen is with gas cooktop, convection oven, full fridge, dishwasher and washing machine and marble countertops. Lots of cookware to put on a nice dinner. Multiple coffee gadgets (bodum, moke, milk frothers). Two and a half baths with decent showers. Nicely pressed bed linens. Two drying racks for clothing. Big windows and nice courtyard for outdoor space to sit and have a glass of wine. Gilda was frequently in touch to make sure everything was okay. Nicolla (property mgr.) met us at a phone calls notice. Nice touch to arrive to a bottle of wine and fresh fruit to welcome us. Great location for seeing Florence. Restaurants nearby are worthy of visiting (Dino's and a pizza rest. around the corner). Grocery store within easy walking distance. Thank you for sharing your second home with us and your concern for our comfort. Would love to return.

Gilda Thank you for letting us rent your wonderful home in Florence! Your home was in the perfect location. We loved Santa Croce and feeling as if we were one of the locals. Everything in Florence is very walkable from the apartment. We certainly highly recommend the apartment to anyone looking for a great "living" experience in Florence.

After seeing all the sites Florence has to offer, we enjoyed coming home every evening to this beautiful and spacious apartment. It's location is within walking distance to many good restaurants and museums. Staying here, versus a hotel, made us feel as if we were natives rather than tourists, especially going to shop for produce and cheeses at the nearby Sant Ambrogio market.

My wife and I stayed for eight days in this wonderful apartment. This was the third time that we have resided there, we keep returning to the same place for some very good reasons. The apartment is exactly as represented in the description, it is spacious and very well maintained. It has high ceilings, large casement windows opening both onto the street and and onto a small interior courtyard. The kitchen is a joy to work in, fully equipped with high quality cookware, cutlery, and appliances. To me the kitchen is critical as I love to shop at the nearby Sant' Ambrogio market and then prepare our evening meals. The apartment is spotless, the furniture is comfortable and is complemented by a number of beautiful antiques. The living room has comfortable chairs, a plush sofa and a bookcase filled with books of art history, museum guides, novels and much more. Gilda is a joy to work with, she responds quickly to any question that might arise and she has several local people readily available to assist you if you should so need them. Perhaps the greatest thing about this apartment is the location on Via Ghibellina, just a couple blocks off Piazza Santa Croce, this location removes you from the ebb and flow of most of the tourist traffic in Florence, it is located in a working neighborhood, there is a wonderful bakery on the corner, the best pizza in town two blocks away at Il Pizzaiuolo, a great restaurant across the street Cafe Dino, coffee and antipasti at Cafe Cibreo, the farmers market and much much more. It is a ten minute walk to Piazza della Signoria, fifteen minutes to Piazza de Duomo and the same to the San Lorenzo Market. When we return to Florence we will definitely select this wonderful apartment again.

History repeats itself! I stayed at Gilda's last December again and enjoyed myself even more. Going back to the 'old' places and appreciating and learning about Florence and all it has to offer. I dare copy what I wrote back then because the 'feelings were back'. Waking up to the melodious bells from the Duomo and going to the corner of the street cafe to have the best cappuccino every morning is something I still miss or going to the market (two blocks away) for my Shakerato (a cappuccino first then the Shakerato) and to buy fresh produce, beans still in their envainado, homemade pasta and fresh basil pesto or nut sauce, is a treat I will never forget. Walking through the streets from your house where Da Vinci or Michelangelo once walked or a daily stroll to Ponte Veccio is more than I could have dreamed of doing. The little store where I would fill my empty bottles with a Montepulciano for just a few Euros, is something one gets easily used to. And the locals added to this marvelous experience. Cannot forget the best gelato around the corner, mamma mia the pistacchio! Mil gracias!
Our family of four adults spent a week in the apartment over Christmas this year and had a fantastic holiday in Florence. We loved being part of the neighborhood and living in an apartment allowed us to enjoy cooking with the best ingredients from the local market. We only ate in a restaurant once during our stay because our abilty to cook in the apartment was such a wonderful experience. Florence is a magical place and the apartment is just lovely and very well appointed. Gilda, the owner, and Donald, the property Manager, were helpful on all aspects of our stay. We all cannot wait to return to Florence and to this apartment. We would absolutely recommend it to anyone in search of a lovely home away from home in Florence.
Perfetto! This one word best describes our experience at Gilda and Fluvio's beautiful apartment a few blocks from Santa Croce. From the get-go, Gilda was enormously helpful, sending us pages of detailed information about both the apartment and the immediate neighborhood. And the apartment was even more beautiful than she described. It combines all the best of a 16th century Italian building with 21st century conveniences. Beautifully furnished and well-stocked, the apartment was also comfortable and felt like home in no time. Niccolo, the property manager, was waiting for us when we arrived, showing us around and answering any questions we had. Dino's across the street became our favorite restaurant - we recommend the Grappa Reserve. Will we back? You bet! Thank you, Gilda.
Our time in Gilda and Fulvio's apartment in Florence was wonderful. The apartment is lovely, well-equipped, situated in a perfect location and close to all of the sights.
We (two couples) spent six nights (4/28/14 - 5/4/14) and were very happy and comfortable with everything. A bonus for us is that it was larger than we anticipated and we found it perfectly delightful for sharing time together or for taking a bit of personal space.
The kitchen is easy to work in and it was so nice to have staple items on-hand. We also took advantage of the washing machine. Every inch of the apartment was exceptionally clean. To have 2.5 baths in the apartment is a gift.
Gilda is so easy to work with and very communicative and knowledgeable -- as are her local helpers: Niccolo and Marlina. The apartment has many reference books and a binder full of restaurant and touring recommendations. We ate several excellent meals right in the neighborhood. It was also a treat to have the local farmer's market just a few blocks away.
When we next travel to Florence, we will definitely stay in their apartment again.
My husband and close friends shared this beautiful apartment for four days. It was extremely spacious and well equipped. We were met at the apartment building door
by Niccolo who helped us up the stairs with our bags and explained everything to us about the apartment and the neighborhood. In addition, Gilda had a binder overflowing with information about the area, its restaurants, her favorite cafes, bakeries, etc. We loved the authenticity and charm of the building especially sitting in the communal courtyard eating a snack and admiring the flower bed (jointly planted and maintained by some of the tenants). Gilda's neighbors were welcoming and friendly and answered
questions for us more than once during our stay. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was supplied with fresh fruit and water for our arrival. Almost anywhere you would want to go in Florence was within walking distance (except airport). We will most definitely return to Gilda's apartment on our next trip to Italia! Grazie mille for a
memorable stay in your friendly and charming city.
