About New Smyrna Beach

The popular lodging option in this town, which was voted the best beach in the state by the Orlando Sentinel four years in a row, are New Smyrna Beach vacation rentals. This is a cultural center with a rich heritage, many unique shopping and dining options, and plenty of fun for the whole family. The historic downtown area, near Canal Street and Flagler Avenue, is a popular place to find unique shops, excellent restaurants, and a vibrant nightlife.

Things to do

Historic Canal Street and Flagler Avenue are popular destinations for visitors who are looking for that unique gift or souvenir. The New Smyrna Speedway is a popular destination for race fans, whereas art lovers will want to check out the world-renowned Atlantic Center for the Arts. Plenty of art and music festivals are held throughout the year, and local shops and galleries offer classes in glass blowing, painting and jewelry-making techniques.

This town is the ideal destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering a long and varied list of outdoor attractions and activities. The beautiful beaches are a great place to kick back and relax or spend some time with the family, and you might also try your hand at surfing. If you prefer to spend your time on the water, there are also plenty of opportunities for boating, fishing, and kayaking. A number of romantic and educational river cruises are available as well. Nearby parks offer opportunities for outdoor recreation and family fun, and a number of tennis courts and golf courses can also be found in this area.

The Sugar Mill Ruins are a top place to visit the Florida of the past, while seeing how a sugar mill operated hundreds of years ago. Along the same lines, Eldora State House is a recently restored house and a trip back in history showcasing artifacts and photos from the old town, Eldora. At the Marine Discovery Center, educational opportunities and tours abound at this business that is dedicated to shielding and sustaining Florida's fragile coastal ecosystems. Lastly, the Black Heritage Museum educates visitors about the Underground Railroad, Buffalo Soldiers, and Martin Luther King Jr., among others.

Climate

Like the rest of Florida north of Lake Okeechobee, New Smyrna Beach has a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, mostly dry winters. The rainy season lasts from April until November, and the shorter dry season, from November to March. The majority of trees do not lose their leaves in autumn. Although it can be chilly and damp during the winter, the temperatures rarely drop below freezing, and usually remain comfortable. The city has recorded snowfall only three times in its 250-year history. The summers are long and hot, with frequent severe thunderstorms in the afternoon, as central Florida is the lightning capital of North America.

Events

In February, visitors can get inspired by attending the annual Art Fiesta. The annual art show features over 240 artisans and crafters from around the country to show and sell their wares. Browse the street and park while listening to musical entertainment throughout the weekend. The art show is held in the Old Fort Park area. In the spring, the warmer weather makes the yearly Seaside Balloon & Skyfest one of April's most popular events in town. One of the biggest, most popular events in Central Florida features night and day air shows, music and entertainment, live animals, a huge carnival, interactive exhibits, airplane and helicopter rides, aircraft displays and dozens of vendors.

Food

Snag breakfast at the Third Wave Cafe, known for its delicious french toast and eggs. The Wake Up Cafe presents your food in such a pleasing manner, while C's Waffles specializes in syrup drenched, and oh-so-mouth-watering waffles. The most-reviewed New Smyrna Beach restaurant is Norwood's, with over 1500 patrons leaving a review on TripAdvisor - while the #1 spot to eat is AA Garden Fusion which also has an incredible wine list. For Mexican, hit up the Taco Shack and for pizza, don't miss Panhead's Pizzeria.

For those who are dreaming of a Florida vacation that is fun for the whole family and packed with plenty of exciting things to do, New Smyrna Beach may be just the ticket. New Smyrna Beach vacation rentals are affordable and close to it all, even if your only goal is to kick back and relax on the beach. If you're planning to stay a week or longer, you might also consider New Smyrna Beach condo rentals, which can also accommodate large groups and offer separate bedrooms, cooking facilities, and other amenities.
