About Crystal River
Crystal River, Florida is one of those ideal places that seems undisturbed by mini malls and commercial development, where manatees swim along kayakers and alligators bask on sun-drenched shores. Crystal River vacation rentals transport you to a place where nature is the entertainment and slowing down and relaxing are automatic reactions to the beauty of this natural paradise.
Things to Do
The water takes center stage in Crystal River and remains a consistent 72-degrees year round due to 30 or so springs that feed it. The river leads directly to the Gulf of Mexico through Kings Bay, and it's a popular spot with the West Indian Manatees, particularly as the Gulf temps begin to cool in the winter. It's not uncommon to see dozens of these friendly sea cows from your kayak or while you're snorkeling in the clear waters. The area also offers a number of underwater caves that are very popular with scuba divers. Fishing and boating are also top activities, as is taking in the sunset at the end of a wonderful day of nature exploration.
Explore Crystal River Reserve State Park to view and photograph a variety of different wildlife on land and in the water. Other places for wildlife viewing include the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge and the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. The latter encompasses 31,000 acres of the Chassahowitzka River and is home to many species of mammals, amphibians, birds, and reptiles.
There are plenty of things to do on land. Crystal River's charming Heritage Village is home to many quaint shops and restaurants. Don't miss the Coastal Heritage Museum that showcases the early years of western Citrus County. The Crystal River Archaeological State Park and museum details the importance of this area as a ceremonial center for ancient Native Americans. The ceremonial mounds can also be seen from the river. Bird lovers enjoy the birding at this site. It's a stop on the Great Florida Birding Trail.
To get to your Crystal River vacation rental, you'll want a car, but after that, bicycles, horses, and watercraft (motorized and non-motorized) provide the most enjoyable ways to explore the area. Private planes can use the Crystal River Airport. Gainesville Regional Airport (68 miles), Orlando International Airport (97 miles), and Tampa International Airport (74 miles) are your best bet for flights.
Crystal River is steamy in the summer with temps averaging in the low 90s and plenty of humidity, but the spring-fed river remains a pleasurable 72-degrees, even when the Gulf is nearing bath temps. Summers also bring on severe thunderstorms and downpours, but they are generally short-lived. Winters are an excellent time to enjoy the manatees as they congregate in the river. Air temps are generally in the 50s-60s.
As one would expect, when the manatees return to the river, it's time to celebrate. On the third weekend of January each year, Crystal River holds its Annual Florida Manatee Festival. The two-day event offers manatee viewing opportunities, an art show, and entertainment. Visitors also enjoy the Citrus County Fair at the end of March and beginning of April. Scallop season at the end of June is an event in itself.
A Crystal River vacation rental gives you more time to enjoy your natural neighbors in this idyllic spot. While you may still find it perplexing why early sailors thought of these sea cows as mermaids, you will fall in love with the mantees' gentle, lumbering ways.
