Climate

The best time to visit Paris is during the summer months when temperatures average in the mid-70s. Although this tends to be the most crowded time of year, the long, sunny days and comfortable temperatures are worth it. During the fall and spring, temperatures drop to the mid-50s. If you visit from December through February you’ll need a warm jacket, and you can expect temperatures that range from 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Neighborhoods

Split in half by the Seine River and divided into 20 arrondissements (or neighborhoods), there is no shortage of Paris vacation rentals throughout the city. When choosing wear to stay, keep in mind that the neighborhoods are numbered and spin out clockwise from the center of the city. Popular places to stay include the 7th arrondissement, which is home to the Eiffel Tower and the Musee d’Orsay, the 4th arrondissement with Notre Dame Cathedral, and the 8th arrondissement with the Champs-Elysees.  

Transit

Paris is easy to get around on foot. Pick an arrondissement with lots of things to do and then walk from one attraction to the next. The city is set up with wide sidewalks and is easy to navigate with the help of a map. Because the city is so big though, you might also want to buy tickets to use the Metro. The public transportation system in Paris is extensive and is best for traveling longer distances.

Paris has something for every type of traveler. From enjoying a bit of culture at a museum to shopping til you drop, this city has it all. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Eiffel Tower: You can’t miss the Eiffel Tower (literally) during a trip to Paris. The massive tower is a landmark in the city. Take the lift to the top for spectacular views of the city or simply have a picnic on the surrounding lawns and take in the incredible structure. At night, the tower lights up and sparkles, so visit during the day and at night if you can. 
  • Champs-Elysees: Start your window shopping adventure at the Arc de Triomphe, which was commissioned by Napoleon in the 1800s and now stands at the head of the Champs-Elysees. Stroll down the street past luxury stores like Louis Vuitton and take in the city’s most famous boulevard. The shops’ exorbitant price tags mean stopping for pain au chocolat at a sidewalk café is likely the only affordable purchase you’ll make on the Champs-Elysees, though.  
  • Notre Dame Cathedral: The gothic architecture of Notre Dame Cathedral is breathtaking for visitors and locals alike. It’s located at the heart of the city on the Ile de la Cite. Walk through the cathedral for free or climb the steps to the top for a small fee.
  • Musee du Louvre: A fort and palace-turned-museum, the Louvre is a must-visit whether you’re a history buff or not. Explore the halls of the world’s largest art museum to see the famed “Mona Lisa” and the Venus de Milo, or simply wander around until you need some fresh air at the Jardin des Tuileries. 
  • Sacred Heart Basilica of Montemarte: Visit the unique neighborhood of Montmarte to see Sacre-Coeur, which towers over the city. Its ornate ivory domes, and interior with gold ceilings and colorful mosaic images make it worth going a bit off the beaten path to see.

Food & Dining

No matter where you are, you’ll always be just steps from a café, bistro or brasserie with many food and drink options to choose from. Linger at a sidewalk café for some of the best people watching and to savor the local fare. Menu items range from a Croquet-Monsieur, a baked or fried ham and cheese sandwich, to escargot, cooked snails. If you’re looking for lighter fare, grab some champagne, baguettes and an assortment of cheese or a box of macarons to enjoy at a park nearby or your vacation rental in Paris.
