Franklin sits on a hill above the Little Tennessee River. The surveyors who chose the site in 1820 admired its beauty, laying out the town with Main Street facing the Cowee Mountains to the east and the Nantahala Range to the west. Though ringed by rugged summits, Franklin was linked to population centers by well-worn trails. It soon developed into the market center of southwestern North Carolina, a role it retains today, especially for the building trades, furniture, and jewelry. Richly blessed with gems and minerals, the town was once touted as the “Gem Capital of the World.” Franklin is also justly proud of its crafters, including quilters, woodworkers, potters, basket makers, and glass artists. The Franklin Press, founded in 1886, is the oldest business in the county. The Macon County Historical Society, operating in the old Pendergrass Store, and the Franklin Gem and Mineral Museum are perennial favorites with tourists. Franklin is also a gateway town for the Appalachian Trail, which passes nearby, attracting hikers almost year-round. Franklin showcases the rich commercial and community history of this North Carolina mountain town.

“The Perfect Getaway!!”

Reviewed 21 Feb 2017

This is such an awesome cabin! The pictures really don't do it justice. The cabin is so beautiful and the details are just amazing! I can tell a lot of work was put in to building the cabin. The kitchen was FULLY stocked (had way more supplies than I expected); all we needed to get were some groceries. Going up the mountain to the cabin is a little tricky, but I quickly learned that it's just important to maintain a 15-20 mph pace up the mountain and then you're good to go! Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to enjoy the fire pit, but my group and I have already thought about making plans to come to this cabin a couple more times over the next few months because we enjoyed it that much. Also, make sure you check out the waterfalls! They are really close by to the cabin. We were able to visit/hike to 3 waterfalls in one afternoon. We also stopped by the nearby brewery, which had the best onion rings and really friendly people! All in all, we had a great weekend and Jerry was extremely helpful through it all! Thanks again Jerry!!

Owner's reply: THANK YOU for taking such good care of our home. Ridgetop awaits your return, Jerry

First of all, our dealings with Jerry were absolutely incredible! This is the place to stay with your family. Warm, cozy, comfortable, clean, and so much more. I can't say enough about this cabin. How is it possible to get all the good things wrapped into one?!! It's peace with nature and all the comforts of home. Thank you Jerry for sharing this amazing place!!!

Owner's reply: Thank you Sherrie!!! Especially for taking such good care of our home. Looking forward to the return of the Oconnell family. Jerry

Our family finds a place to stay every year for our vacation! I found Ridgetop Manor browsing the internet and called Jerry immediately, thinking the place would already be rented for the week we wanted! To our pleasure, it was available and the deal for the week was just incredible! Thinking the pictures were old and not knowing what to expect, we arrived and were blown away at how beautiful this property was and how beautiful the whole area is! Then we walked inside and I found my personal heaven! The most beautiful house I've ever had the pleasure of staying in. Everything was exactly as described, everything was furnished, and Jerry was just a phone call away and checked to make sure we had everything we needed! Absolutely the best vacation we ever spent together for so little money! Everything was close by and even has a Ruby Mine at the beginning of the drive! We found our mountain vacation home here and made a great friend with Jerry and his wife and can't wait to go back! Thanks Jerry for a vacation we'll never forget!

Owner's reply: We are so glad to have you and yours as part of the family.

“The real deal”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2016

I was skeptical that a place could have such amazing reviews until the moment I came over the hill on the long winding driveway up that amazing mountain and saw the sign for "Cabin 6". The house, simply put, is incredible, extremely clean, and VERY spacious. Among it's many amenities, it has a massive wrap around deck that's perfect for late night drinks and early morning coffee. Full kitchen, 6 bedrooms, including a huge master bedroom with sitting area and bathroom, this house is unbelievable. There's a great fire pit next to the property that's behind a small area of crowded trees so any light from the house is blocked out, leaving you with an amazing view of the milky way. As a city-dweller, I have to say, nothing quite compares to the sound of nature and burning wood. Jerry is also an incredibly professional and easy-to-contact owner. He was available via email / phone every step of the way, sending me ideas for food and entertainment. This was without a doubt one of the best vacations I've ever been on, if you're looking for a massive and secluded property to catch up with friends and family then look no further. Honorable Mentions: -The downstairs area would be perfect for kids to congregate and sleep and play, it has it's own bathroom, 2 beds, and a massive table for games. -You won't have much cell service on the mountain (I consider this a plus) but the WiFi in the house is powerful enough to keep 10+ people online. -The view of the mountains on the front porch is better than TV, but if you need TV, there's a huge one in the living room with VCR/DVD player and cable, we alternated between the fog covered mountains and the olympics. -Should you need to get off the mountain for a few hours there are plenty of great places to eat less than 10 miles from the mountain, also, Harrah's Casino is a quick 40min drive away, and tons of awesome Flea Markets and shops. After our stay Jerry made sure we knew that the house was our new home away from home and he means it and I believe him!! I hope this review helps anyone make their decision, this place is the real deal.

You really could not do better than stay in this gorgeous home. The pictures don't even really do it justice. There is everything you might need right there in the house. Very clean, very comfortable. Jerry is the most helpful host I have ever encountered, and is really there to make sure your stay goes smoothly. Loved the fire pit at night. It's SO QUIET up there. Can't wait to return.

Mr. Vanhoeven,
I really can't say enough good about your wonderful cabin and all of the amenities.
Where do I start?........

The cleanliness of all of the living spaces was absolutely top notch. I immediately was very comfortable in the surroundings. All of the things you supplied was incredible down to a campfire to roast marshmallows and hotdogs. Our kids absolutely loved that. It's like you thought of everything. I can't believe how well the kitchen was stocked with incidentals. Not only were there dishes and cookware supplied but they were of very high quality. It just showed me how much pride you place in your cabin and ALL that came along with it. The beauty of the cabin alone and all of the nice touches, snack bar, rocking chairs, gas grill, camp fire with wood supplied....... I could go on and on. You definitely thought of everything.
And you can't overlook the absolute beauty of the surroundings and the wonderful view. I woke up every morning and ran to the back porch to see the view in the early morning. I loved to sit in the rockers and just sit and listen to the peacefulness of the place. You should be very proud of the wonderful home you have built. I appreciate you sharing it with us the week we stayed and I certainly look forward to visiting again.

I just wanted to tell you that we had a wonderful sibling family reunion at your cabin #6 in Cowee Valley. It was a very comfortable and relaxing place for us to sit around and reminiense and make new memories. We spent alot of time in the kitchen and on the wrap-around porch in the rocking chairs. None of my siblings had been to the mountains of NC and so this was a perfect place. We were close enough to go to Fontana Dam and the Biltmore. Also, time to do shopping in Franklin.
I hope you found the place as clean as when we arrived and found no problems.
We will recommend your cabins to anyone that ask and we will keep your cabins in mind if we plan another reunion in the mountains. With 7 brothers and sisters we are taking turns every 2 years planning a reunion.
Thanks again

Jerry, Your cabin was awesome, so big and the view was unbelievable. The decking was beautiful, we sat outside and just soaked it all in. We had a dog come see us twice a day which the kids named scraps because he always wanted to eat. Thank you so much for such a enjoyable stay and for the discount on the rate. We also went gem mining down the mountain which was interesting and the kids had a good time Debi Bailey

"Ridgetop Manor is named perfectly"

Ridgetop Manor, is a beautiful home at the top of a mountain outside of Franklin. The property is so large you see almost nothing but forest and mountains around you as you sit on the beautiful porches that surround the home. It is a short walk down to a quaint campfire pit with log seating and the road loops back to the cabin, a peaceful walk in the summer as fireflies twinkle around you. When you walk into the cabin an amazing stairway with a custom railing depicting forest animals is the first thing you see. There are three floors all beautifully decorated and cozy. I loved curling up on the sofa and looking out the huge glass doors to the mountains beyond or waking up and seeing the other mountains out the back with the clouds that had lowered overnight rising to greet the sun. The owners are gracious people and they have made sure that every need is met while you stay in their cabin. Highlands is not far and Cherokee was a great day trip for us. One of the best mines in Franklin is at the bottom of the driveway, there's always plenty to see if you can pull yourself away.
