About the area

Nestled in North Carolina's southern mountains, in the foothills of the Great Smokies, the area offers a unique change of pace, a never-ending supply of things to do. Franklin is large enough to offer almost everything you need, yet small enough to offer the highest quality of life. While the area is famous for is rural beauty, it is by no means isolated. Franklin is situated along major highways US 23/441 and US 64, with easy access to major interstates I-40, I-26 and I-85. Atlanta, Georgia is just 127 miles to the south, while Knoxville, Tennessee is only 110 miles to the north and Asheville, NC is 65 miles to the east. The natural heritage of Franklin is not limited to mountain scenery and wildlife. The area is rich in gems and minerals. The famous Cowee Valley north of Franklin lures thousands each year to its mines which yield valuable stones to lucky miners annually. You'll also find other gem mines located throughout the area. Among the native stones found are ruby, sapphire and garnets just to name a few.

“Family time”

Reviewed 8 Jun 2016

Just returned from a 4 day trip to the mountains. Really enjoyed the time spent in this chalet. The pics are very accurate and the place was clean and beds made. This does have quite a few steps so I would not recommend it to the elderly or those with mobility problems. I would also recommend that you not bring a vehicle that is low to the ground. It is rustic around the chalet with no yard, just trees and a very pretty rock wall behind it. We drove to Highlands NC and enjoyed the scenic beauty of waterfalls and landscape. Lots of shops and things to do. We also drove to Helen Ga which is a German style city and it was only an hour and a half from Franklin. Wonderful food, shops, homemade candy, gifts and tubing. We also visited the Scottish Tartan shop in Franklin and bought some things for my mom that of Scottish decent. Gem mining was fun too. Overall we wish we had more time but would love to come again. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

“2015 Fall Vacation Franklin North Carolina”

We stayed at the Swiss Mountain Chalet and it was just wonderful! Just outside of Franklin but conveniently close. Nestled in the woods just as described. Quaintly decorated with a country theme. All that was needed for a comfortable stay. Close to a lot of day activities. Blue Ridge Parkway, Smokey Mountains, Cherokee, Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Highlands, Highway 28 is a wonderful scenic drive. Will surely tell our friends and family about this Chalet and would love to go back to stay there again one day.

“Excellent stay!”

We were very happy with this rental. It was chilly and the fireplace was toasty and just perfect with a cup of warm NC apple cider! Located close to town but it felt private and we lvoed the wooded outside area. Would happily rent this place again! Also highly recommend it to others.

“A fine , really fine surprise!”

“Chalet near Franklin, NC”

Reviewed 15 Oct 2013

Had a wonderful time in the Franklin area. Beautiful country and so much to do near by! Can easily spend more than a week without going far from "home" -- this Chalet was clean, and felt so welcoming with all the extra little cabin nick nacks around. Plenty of room for six people (two of the beds are small twins for kids). Having bathrooms near each bedroom was very convenient. Everything you need in the kitchen. Had a nice balcony to sit outside (only complaint I would have is that if you want a mountain view, this Chalet is in the trees so can't see the mountains but otherwise, its a wonderful and secluded yet close to everything kinda' place to be! Definitely a 4+ and at an affordable price.

“What a wonderful time with God and His creation.”

I really loved being in the mountains this week. The cabin was everything I ask for and more. The hiking trails and the walks down & up the rock roads was more than anyone would need to find peace and reflect on life. I truly left there a better person and will be coming back again next year for some more wonderful down time. One more thing, the cabin was beautiful, inside and out, I loved it and if was well worth the stay. Many thanks to my temp landlords. I couldn't have ask for better owners to allow me to use their home for a week. Sincerely, Ken Murdock.

“Spring time in the mountians”

Reviewed 26 Apr 2013

Spring is a great season to stay at the Mountain Swiss Chalet. The Chalet is in a very natural wooded setting that comes alive with all colors at this time. The evenings are still cool enough for the use of the fireplace, adding to the cozy, comfortable feeling of the Chalet. All in all the Chalet has everthing needed for a wonderful week like we have just experienced. We hope to return again. Ron and Sally

“A week in the mountians”

Reviewed 26 Oct 2012

We had a great time . the chalet was so homey we felt at home from the minute we arrived. The leaves were falling all around and the fireplace was warm and cozy. Beds were most comfortable and all we needed was supplied....the only complaint was the l3 steps up to the door and the 13 steps up to the loft....coming from Florida we are used to all one level.....but all in all, it was a great week.

“First stay at the Chalet in the woods”

Reviewed 16 Jul 2011

We planned our vacation in January to stay at the Chalet - couldn't wait for the time to go once again to Franklin! The Chalet is located in a highly wooded area - with sounds of nature that really make you so tranquil and thankful to be there! I loved the location - because we had privacy, but yet it was close to mining, dining and shopping! Hilda was wonderful and aswered all my e-mails immediately. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with strangers - we look forward to staying at the the Chalet next year! Connie & Dennis Deltona, Florida
