ABOUT THE COTTAGE
Three bedroom cottage on the eastern side of Indian Point, Georgetown, Maine.
Our cottage is on the seaward end of the Indian Point Association, first incorporated in 1960 (with some homes/families predating that by many decades). The association includes access to 5 beaches, numerous trails, and a large clamming sand-flat area.
The cottage, built by my grandparents over 50 years ago, features floor to ceiling windows across an open-plan dining/living area, overlooking a secluded cove directly in front of the cottage. Views extend across the ocean to Damariscove Island to the northeast and open ocean to the southeast. Some views south can catch a glimpse of Salter Island and sometimes Seguin Island Light.
Spacious 3 bedrooms each with bureaus/desks and full closets are great for extended stays or lots of gear. Two bedrooms have double beds. One bedroom has a double bed and a junior twin. Nice bathroom with shower. Children of all ages are welcome -- we have pack-and-plays, high chair/booster seats, games for every age and beach toys. Well-behaved pets are also welcome -- please discuss responsibilities with manager (just the usual: bring own pet blanket, pick up after pet waste, leashes required off property on association beaches/lands, beware of ticks, etc.).
Kitchen features microwave, full stove/oven, small grinder, toaster oven, full refrigerator (no icemaker, only trays), coffeemaker and small bean grinder, a dishwasher, and clothes washer/dryer. Propane grill and lobster pot available. Lots of cooking stuff and dishes. Linens/towels included. Basic highspeed/broadband internet service (DSL) and local telephone service included. Check in is 4pm Sunday, and check-out is 10am the next Sunday.
ABOUT FUTURE SUMMERS
If you are interested in a week in a future year, please let us know. The Availability Calendar here shows future years as blocked because we haven't finalized family and repeat-renter schedules for those years. Nevertheless, feel free to contact us about desired dates anyway -- if we know we can accommodate you, and if you book, we will continue to pre-block your dates.
In November, we mark available any weeks for the next summer which are not tentatively held for returning renters or family. In mid-January, weeks reserved for returning renters who have not yet confirmed will also become marked available.
(PS: Very generally -- depending on the layout of the calendar -- our future rental calendar will typically be the 3rd & 4th weeks June, the 3rd & 4th weeks of July, the 1st, 2nd, and 4th weeks of August, and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of September. This listing includes weeks that are often taken by returning renters.)
Visitors can register for a $20 7-day clamming license with the town, and enjoy complete access to a sizeable sandy clamflat/beach area (Sagadahoc Bay).
Register for your $1 saltwater angler license online with the state and enjoy fishing for stripers off numerous rock outcroppings.
Drive to nearby Reid State Park for miles of beach -- Clamming at Reid State requires no license. Guests of the Association can use the main park entrance (fee), or access the park at low-tide (watch the tide!) from the western edge.
Go to the famous Five Islands Lobster Company for freshly caught lobster and dockside dining. Enjoy the bounty at Five Islands Farms vegetable and culinary delights shop. Take easy day trips to all the sightseeing, antiquing, and outdoor adventures of midcoast Maine and Route 1. Bath's Maine Maritime Museum is 25 minutes away, as is picturesque Wiscasset. Multiple vintage/excursion train venues are all 30-45 minutes drive (Maine Eastern, Boothbay, W.W.&F. in Alna).
Award-winning historic downtown Bath with restaurants and shopping is 20-25 minutes away, as is Wiscasset ("the prettiest village in Maine") with the famous "Reds Eats" and the pub-happenings of Maine Street Brunswick, each 30 minutes to the north and south, respectively. Picturesque Boothbay Harbor with whaling and sailing adventures is 55 minutes to the north. Freeport -- with L.L. Bean and shopping outlets too numerous to count -- is 50 mins to the south.

Getaway with incredible view
Getaway with incredible view

It is difficult to explain how beautiful the view is (even from inside the house!) here, but I'll try: the main living room/space has wall to wall, floor to ceiling windows, with a view from a high enough vantage point to see the open ocean, islands, garden, trees, skies that invite hours of staring and contemplation (binoculars and telescopes were available too). Otherwise, the character-laden "Pachowsky cottage" was simple: clean and comfortable with pretty much anything one might need for a week-long getaway (they had even left food in case we arrived with nothing!) There were several private beaches within walking distance, and a State park (which we didn't go to) was a short drive away as well. The house was very child friendly (pack n' plays, high chair, beach toys, etc), our three young kids loved their trip. Our hostess was also lovely, welcoming and helpful. Highly recommended.

Kate's home is lovely, perched on what essentially becomes a private beach/inlet when the tide goes out, but with the advantage of spectacular views out to the sea. The "beach' is an easy walk down from the backyard down to the rocks, and from there you have the choice of making your way to a great real sand beach on one side -- that splits during the outgoing tide -- a magnificent promontory with natural pools (some swimmable) on the other, or, straight out, an island looking at the sea. If you don't feel adventurous, there's a bucolic pathway to thesand beach right off the driveway. Kate made us feel right at home as soon as we got there, with detailed instructions and a pantry stocked with food and paper products we may have forgotten -- a rarity in vacation homes -- and she even called us when a storm was approaching to let us know where to find flashlights. Lots of books and stuff for the little ones, although it was just the two of us older folks. We've stayed in Indian Point for the past three years, so know and love the area -- IP is highly unusual in that it features 5 different beaches, including a secret back entrance to Reid State Park and its extraordinary tidal "river," and Kate's is close to them all, or at least a healthy walk to one or two. Porpoises, seals and eagles are regular sightings. When the tide goes out, Sagadhoc Bay -- another short walk -- is one glorious, shining flat, perfect for dog (and people) walking and clamming. You have to slow down, literally, from the moment you get here, as the road narrows and folks and wildlife like to stroll. For those who want their necessities a close drive, this may not be the place. But the Georgetown Country Store is only 15 minutes away, the full-to-bursting Five Islands gourmet store -- and a lobster pound with multi-million-dollar views -- a bit farther, and Bath, a throwback of a town with nice shopping and dining, is about a 25-minute scenic drive (but watch out for those deer). Water can go out on the weekends, when vacationers hit the island, and power outages do happen. It really doesn't matter. The only thing we see are the views, the air, the water, and the friendly residents. Our only request for Kate: King -- or OK -- queen beds to stretch out in, and maybe a larger variety of bowls, pots, pans and spices for those of us who like to spend a few hours cooking. But that's real nitpicking. This place is truly special, and, if you love Maine, you just can't find a better spot

My husband and I arranged this vacation so that ALL our family members could meet for a needed family get together. The cottage was arranged perfectly for the 6 of us to have both "together space" and private space. From each window there was a great view - of ocean, or pretty woodsy glens, etc. The cottage was extremely well equipt and comfortable, and the beaches were picturesque and wonderful . You can tell we love Maine!.

The cottage was very charming and comfortable. It was not very modern but homey. A gorgeous view of the ocean! Perfect for a secluded getaway. Private friendly beaches in walking distantance. We went as a family and only inconvience was travel to resturants, stores, but were advised ahead of arrival. Little peice of paradise!
Hi Tammy! Thank you for the review! We had a great time hosting you!
RE:Locale: it is out in the ocean a bit - we do try to prep folks.
RE:Not modern: In keeping with my grandfather's intent as builder, we keep it basic, but will be doing some upgrades each year. Still, it's a Maine cottage by the sea: salmon, avocado and butternut aren't just foods, they're kitchen colors! :)
Thanks again! -K.

You won't want to leave

Pack your provisions and everything you need as once you arrive you will not want to leave. This spacious ocean view cottage provides the perfect place to vacation. We felt at home from the moment we were greeted at the door. It provides quiet respite with an ever changing view as well as the freedom of simply stepping out the door exploring beaches, trails, and the rockbound coast of Maine. The floor to ceiling windows provide a spectacular view. Whether watching the tide, the lobster and pleasure boats, the birds practicing their water ballet, Great Blue Herons watching for a meal or eagle perched high in a tree, or meditating on the wondrous beauty of nature, this is the place for relaxation and enjoying it all. Our teenager, dog, and visitors all loved walking the beaches, climbing the rocks and beach combing with us. The neighbors we met while exploring on foot were friendly and informative. We actually did get in the car to visit Georgetown highlights, plus visiting Five Island Vegetables, etc and Five Islands Lobsters for great fried clams, then picked up our cooked lobsters from Georgetown Variety. Otherwise we stayed put and enjoyed every minute. At the end of the day we took advantage of the grill enjoying dinner with a view. You even the view from the kitchen sink is great. I've never missed TV less. For those who can't live without it this is a fine internet connection, but for me my mobile devices became cameras for a week. Linens, towels, pots, pans, lobster utensils -- check -- all there. Kate communicated openly and well from the get-go assuring we knew the cottage was still a work in progress as a rental. The only surprise was that the entire experience exceeded our expectations. Just wish I knew our dates and plans for next summer.
