Located on the otter creek horse trail system ,includes 65 miles of horse trails located on Independence River and Otter Creek State Forest. Located within the Adirondack park. These trails on the state forest are also great hiking trails and cross country ski trails. Trails wind through wooded areas along Adirondack ponds, gently flowing waters like Otter, Little Otter, Beaver Meadow, Chase and Crooked Creeks, and the Independence River and Gleasmans Falls. The Otter Creek State Forest horse stables are 2.5 mies away, and close to many private horse back riding stables. Things to do At Independence River Cabin and other information. Summer Many hiking trails directly from cabin to access 76,000 acres of Independence River Wild Forest ,or drive to many other trail heads close by. The most popular trail to hike nearby is Gleasmans Falls. The Trail head is about 3 miles away off Beachmill Road, then from parking area it is a 3 mile hike in to the Gleasmens falls. We also supply trail maps and information about the nearby trails at the Cabin. You can always hike along the Independence River Upstream from the Cabin, it is almost entirely State Lands , DEC. So take a hike along the River and explore the rapids, calm waters, waterfalls, sandbars, islands., great fishing holes, cliffs. Also you can tube down the River, you can drive on Bailey Road (on Stateland )located at the end of Sperryville Road and drive to the Old Bridge. Then from there you can tube down river one mile to the Cabin. Hike where not many hike too, be a wilderness adventurer, be bold. The Village of Lowville (Population about 6,000) is 10 miles away. It has some unique gifts and specialty shops and art shops. It also has 2 major Grocery stores a Wal Mart and a Tops. Just outside of Lowville is Millers Meat Market (actually you will pass by on your way to Lowville), has great custom cut meats and a great "Jerky Burger" great to cook on grill. Also visit Noltzs Country Store just north of Lowville on route 812. For dining there are many Resturaunts in the area. I would recommend "Jebs" which is similair to an Apple Bees and is located on Shady Ave in the center of Lowville. Also the "Ridgeview" which is located just outside of Lowville on Route 12 . The Ridgeview is fairly new and has a modern rustic touch with timber frame construction, and cedar log chairs and tables. Also about 6 miles outside of Lowville on Route 12 is the " Tughill Vineyard. You can visit their wine tasting rooms and specialty shops. You can also tour the Vineyard outside on golf carts provided. Also usually live acoustic music Thursdays through Saturdays. Visit the Croghan Maple Musuem 12 miles away and learn of the rich history of Maple Syrup production in Lewis County. Visit the Rail Road Musuem also in Croghan. Also in Croghan area visit the Mennonite Heritage Farm. Oh and also when your in Croghan do not forget to buy some fresh famous "Croghan Bologna" and stop by the "Croghan Candy Kitchen" and buy a great varity of homemade candies. Go Horseback riding at Still Meadow Ranch, they have miles of new trails that wind through gently rollingmeadows and forests. Amazing views of the Adirondacks and the Black River Valley. Visit and drive by the Tug Hill Wind farm just outside of Lowville and marvel at the many Windmills. There are designated Windmills you can drive too and park at base and take photos. You can also visit the Lewis County Historical society in Lowville. Also every Saturday visit and shop at the Farmers Market at the Lowville Fair Grounds Pavillion. 1000 Islands Region is 1.25 hours away, go on Uncle Sam Boat Tour commencing from the tourist village of Alexandria Bay. This tour is very scenic and can learn the history of the area ,also makes a stop at the famous Boldt Castle . The tourist village of Old Forge is 50 minutes away. Visit Enchanted Forest and Water Safari, or visit the many specialty shops, or go on a diner cruise starting on First lake then going to Fourth Lake . And of course if your really not into the tourist life, or crowded places you can always hang out at my beautiful cabin, sit on the porch and read, or invite a few friends over and start a campfire in our firepit and listen to the sound of the peacefull river. Winter Go downhill skiing at Snow Ridge Ski Resort in Turin about 15 minutes away. Also downkill ski at McCauley Mountain in Old Forge NY about 50 min away . Go cross country Skiing , or snowshoeing ,from Cabin drive down to end of Sperryviile Road at snow plow turn around ,State parking lot ¼ mile from cabin. “Perfect cabin!”

very cabin like but with all the comforts of home. Exceptionally clean and maintained as well. The weather was awful, but having such a nice place to stay made it much better:0

“Perfect Secluded Getaway”

Reviewed 22 Mar 2016

At the recommendation of a friend and former guest, my new bride and I came here for our honeymoon. This place is absolutely wonderful. The view is fantastic, the privacy is unparalleled, and the cabin itself is amazing. We were pleased to see that the cabin was cleaner than most five star hotels I've stayed in! The amenities are generous, though we never once turned kn the television. A couple recommendations: Unlock the porch door from the inside, then unload your luggage there. The main entrance is difficult to carry furniture and firewood through. Second, never ever ever hang in to a hot kettle while filling it with water. I should have known. Anyway, Ralph has done an amazing job and there are only q couple small touches I would add to make it perfect. Otherwise this is far better than any hotel or motel. Bring your own sheets and food and stay here as much as you can without going into Lowville. Matthew and Barbara P.S. The person cleaning has done an amazing job as well. Make sure to take care of them as well.

“Independence River Cabin”

Reviewed 11 Nov 2015

When we pulled down the driveway, the cabin and the spot overlooking the river took our breath away. Upon going into the cabin, the enchantment continued. Ralph thought of everything! A covered porch overlooking the fire pit and river had a gas grill, and seating! The cabin was well appointed, with everything just as Ralph had said it would be. He'd provided a few movies and games, and there was plenty of cookware and dishes. We walked around, and did some exploring, walked along the river a bit, and just really enjoyed nature. This spot was very private, and we had a wonderful time. We'll definetly try to return.

“Beautiful cabin”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2015

We spent a week at the cabin, and it was very clean upon arrival. Nice, quiet place to spend a week. Very relaxing to hear the river at night, and that was the only sound. No traffic noise, no neighbors - just the river. The owner, Ralph, was very easy to work with and very responsive to e-mails. Everything you need for a nice vacation can be found here.

Owner's reply: Hello John Glad everything went well in my cabin hope to see you come again

“Husband's Birthday!”

Reviewed 28 Jul 2015

As usual I try to plan something for my husband who only requires simple things in life... but will do everything for others. So I try to plan a weekend or night away... something he would only do for the kids not his self... so last minute booked the cabin! 5 hour drive to & fro but well worth it. Met Mary & Koda and Mom, very gracious and bubbly! Cabin was very clean! (even with my obsessive need for cleanliness) the sight is beautiful and quiet... thankful for know cell phone, being from the city. The river is best for fishing and an adventurous, fearless 11 year old (girl) who created- junior white river rafting. I tried and fell over and smashed into a rock hence my ignorance & consequence! Husband relived his years as a boyscout- firepit and made smores. Full on BBQ a & brkfst in the a.m. My only suggestion would be a crock pot or stock pot in house. Ralph does get in touch with you and is thorough. very nice people & dog. I recommend and plan on going back or trying the lake house!

Secluded, picturesque cabin in the middle of nowhere. Very clean and spacious with plenty of room for us to sleep. The porch overlooking the river was a wonderful way to spend time drinking morning coffee. Short drive into town with great food. Thanks for allowing us to share your cabin Ralph. We will see you again soon :)
