Area Information
The house is situated in Vastra Gotaland, Sweden. Conveniently located between two national capitals - Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway - the location makes a great 'base-camp' from which, once sufficiently unwound by the soothing nearby forests and picturesque lakes, to make excursions from the heart of Scandinavia to various hubs of activity all at a close proximity.

In the immediate area there are ancient sites to explore while learning about the Viking culture, all while the modern village of Mellerud is standing by with all of your amenities, just fifteen minutes down the road by car or public transit. In fact, the retreat has it's own bus stop where you can board the public transit system called Västrafik at numerous times per day connecting you to wherever you might wish to go! Mellerud has a train station with daily departures to Oslo, Stockholm and Gothenberg, just to name a few.

The idyllic and highly scenic landscape of Dalsland - a paradise of calm and quiet, deep green forests, and, first and foremost, a famous multitude of lakes, rivers and waterways: a vast water world known among the most magnificently beautiful in Europe.
The Dalslands canal ( 15 min drive from the house) with he famous and frequently pictured passage at HÃ¥verud - a combination of a roadway bridge, a railway bridge and an aqueduct, opened in 1868.

More than anything, Dalsland is known as a mecca for canoeists and kayakers, who come from all over Sweden and the rest of Europe to enjoy weeks of paddling and peaceful, scenic camping, always with an abundance of natural luxuries such as solitude and pristine wilderness.

Gothenburg is a coastal and maritime city. Its history, atmosphere and character have always been shaped by the sea and seafaring, built as it is around Scandinavia´s largest port. Gothenburg forms the centre of the great West Coast Archipelago seascape, with its thousands of islands, rocks and skerries - a limitless eldorado to explore for all with a passion for salty waters, sea breeze and ocean swells.

It is recommended to fly into Gothenburg( or Stockholm) and either rent a car or take Vastrafik to Stora Halangen. Cars can be rented from Mellerud at any time.

There are many attractions for the curious traveler in Scandinavian cities such as modern design museums or the recently constructed Oslo Opera huset, the beautiful theatre in Stockholm as well as fantastic and world-class museums such as the Kontiki Museum, Oslo, or the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. Art, Architecture, Anthropology...History, Discovery, Natural History - a true smorgasbord covering everybody's taste!
We highly recommend delving into the folkloric culture and arts in Dalarna, North of Dalsland and getting into the National Parks along the mountain ranges between Sweden and Norway. Visit the nearby fort in Halden on the boarder of Norway just an hour away, or if you're really into castles, head down to Tjolöholms slott , South of Gothenburg to explore further the medieval culture such as Indeed so much can be said about traveling in Sweden, from the coasts and archipelagos, the capital or bustling ultra-modern centers to hiking in the Arctic Circle during the midnight sun - all of it available from a safe and homely environment.
