Getting around

Grates Cove Studios is located a two hour scenic drive from St. John's on the Baccalieu Trail, and is accessible by car, motorcycle or bicycle via Route 70.

Getting here

A Journey in Itself Grates Cove is a 2-hour drive from St. John’s. With the Baccalieu Trail being on a peninsula, you have two options for travel. You can drive up the Conception Bay shore, or the Trinity Bay shore. Either is beautiful, and has its own charm. That’s what makes the Trail so nice; you get the best of both worlds! From St. John’s, take the Trans Canada Hwy 1 West to Hwy 75, the exit for Carbonear (Exit 31). Stay on the main highway, if you take any of the exits, you will end up on the coastal road, which will work, but will take much longer (50 km/hr). At Carbonear the highway ends. Continue on the main road until you get to Victoria. You now have a choice to continue on Hwy 70 (Conception Shore) or Hwy 74 then 80 (Trinity Shore). Each is nice, and will get you to the same place in the end. The drive from Carbonear to Grates Cove takes about an hour. If you choose Hwy 74, you will come to Heart’s Content. Take Hwy 80 North. Both 70 and 80 will lead to Old Perlican. There is an Irving Gas station at the intersection. Take Hwy 70 to Bay de Verde (turn right if you came on Hwy 70, go straight if you came on Hwy 80). In a few minutes you will come to the turnoff to Grates Cove. Turn left. (If you continue straight you will end up in Bay de Verde). It is 7 km to Grates Cove. As you get closer, you will see views of Baccalieu Island on your right. As you come into “the Grates”, you will see our picturesque cove below you. Turn left, down the hill.

What a delightful place- lovely accommodations- super view, good food and wonderful conversations with the owners. -Alice, St. John's September, 2016

Thanks for the warm welcome and great hospitality on a cold & windy day. The view from the master room is incredible and we love the unique & personalized menu at the end of the road. A little gem that was wonderful to discover. See you again! Grant, Chantelle, Ivan & Franklin..... 2 bikes, 2 babies & a 9 week adventure. July 2016

This place is a little piece of heaven and makes us consider living here. Can't believe the people here wake up to this view every day. The food here was simply amazing. I've eaten Korean pancakes many times before and yours has been one of the best. We will definitely recommend your restaurant and B&B to friends visiting Newfoundland. Thanks, Katie & Grant, Ottawa, ON

Terry and Courtney provide a comfortable, unique home. The bedroom has stunning views over the cove. We enjoyed the fusion of cajun and Newfoundland cooking, for which they are both renowned, in the school room studios. This was a perfect start to our Newfoundland family trail and should be a must for those exploring Newfoundland.. C&P Burt, Shropshire, England June 2016

Thank you for a wonderful weekend. Love the "spice" you have brought to Grates Cove! See you again. -S.Sexton, St. John's, Newfoundland

Thank you for being the destination for which a magical day has happened. In this moment, there is nowhere else in the world I'd want to be. A. Swanson

First time in Grates Cove, Newfoundland! Had the loveliest, most memorable, and relaxing stay thanks to Courtney & Terrence! Thank you for your wonderful hospitality and for introducing us to the lovely aspect of this little town! Great hikes and great scenic views. Hope to come back. -Melody, Jonathan, Jerry and Cathy So, New Jersey, USA August 2015

Absolutely beautiful room with a million dollar view! Clean and quiet, the bed was lovely and we slept like babies. Breakfast was fantastic, best French toast ever, with fresh picked blueberries. We also had dinner at their restaurant which was also fantastic and the highlight of our vacation. Courtney is a fantastic saucier, her Cajun sauce on scallops is too wonderful to describe. Also had the cod with another fantastic sauce. Wonderful beets and fresh pork hamburger. We can't say too much about this place, if it were in California it would be a bargain at 5 times the price! M. McCluskey September 2016

I had a wonderful, though brief, time staying in Grates Cove. Courtney and Terrence were wonderful hosts. They gave great suggestions for hikes in the area and ensured that I had everything I needed. The best part though, was the food that they prepared for breakfast and dinner. Other people have written about the food in their reviews, but it was still a surprise to find such wonderful food in a remote location. B. Muccari August 2016

Courtney & Terrance made us feel very welcome. They are kind and interesting people. They told us about fantastic hikes in the area and even took us on an extended walk to pick local berries and see spectacular views of the ocean and countryside. They are creative and excellent chefs who serve unique breakfasts and dinners that taste great. We loved out weeklong stay. M. McKnight August 2016

Courtney was a wonderful host. The whole process of getting in and out of the property was very smooth. The deck is great and provided an excellent vantage point for staring at the stars (it's so clear and dark there that we were able to see unbelievable stars!). Courtney and her husband also run a restaurant and event space in town and we had an EXCELLENT dinner and enjoyed a performance by a Newfoundland poet/musician. E. Wendel July 2016

The view from the master bedroom was breathtakingly beautiful. We will definitely recommend this place to friends and family. The owners also have a restaurant nearby. Expect an amazing breakfast, and I highly recommend getting dinner there as well! K. Tam July 2016

What a wonderful place to stay! The view in our room was spectacular, the food was amazing...quiet, quaint, and exactly what we were looking for. I highly recommend this B and B for anyone looking for a real east coast experience. K. Bosh June 2016
