“Paradise on Maui”

Reviewed 29 Oct 2017

My husband and I looked at several houses on Maui but Hale Mauka Makai was the only one that truly caught our eye. For 11 days it was our own private paradise on Maui. We knew we wanted to stay someplace on north Maui, away from the resort towns and this house is perfectly located. The property and pool are amazing; we often spent whole days there not wanting to leave! We had fresh grapefruit, starfruit and passionfruit every morning. The kitchen was very well equipped, use the Nespresso and the Vitamix! The bed was super comfy and we loved sleeping with the windows open to the breezes. The house is extreemly well cared for and you can tell that Claudia and Kevin want everyone who comes here to enjoy it to the fullest. The towns of Pa'ia and Haiku are very close and have great restaurants and grocery stores. The beach in Pa'ia was great - don't miss the sea turtles that come up on shore every evening before sunset. Claudia gave us great tips on day trips, restaurants and attractions. But we are most grateful for her assistance in planning our 25th anniversary vow renewal on the property. She is a gem and we will never forget her kindness. You will be forever happy and grateful that you chose Hale Mauka Makai for your Maui escape.

“Fantastically equipped, beautiful property, and co”

Our family had a wonderful stay at Hale Mauka Makai. The past few years we've stayed at a condo on the other side of the island, and this year we decided to try something different - after staying at Hale Mauka Makai it's hard to imagine going back to staying at a condo again. The layout of the home was perfect for our family of 5 - and the home was equipped with everything we needed for a memorable family vacation. Though other homes are nearby, from the house there is complete privacy - all we saw was ocean, the volcano, and the cows next door (though we never smelled them!). We can't wait to go back.

“Wonderful, secluded getaway”

Reviewed 7 Jul 2016

Hale Mauka Makai was the perfect vacation home for my family of four. It’s on a quiet and private location, with the owners, Claudia and Kevin, maybe a hundred yards away, separated by open lawn, flowering shrubs and trees. The house has amazing comfort and style, with island décor and well maintained furniture. The kitchen is stocked with cookware, you will just need most fridge and pantry items (except for herbs, spices, fruits and veggies—more on that later). Outside the kitchen was a grill which we used almost every night. We loved the espresso maker, the accompanying milk frothier and the variety of coffees. Overall, the house is clean, spacious, and airy especially with the windows and doors open for the trade winds. The pool is great, and we were able to sling our music to a Bluetooth receiver and have it play outside while we swam. Nice touch, but it didn’t beat the wind rustling in the palm leaves. The location is fine, maybe thirty minutes to Kahului and an hour to Lahaina or Makena. However, just minutes away are the quirky surf town Paia and the wonderful family friendly beach, Baldwin Beach Park. The property is lush with trees and flowers. There is a garden of crisp vegetables and fresh herbs (hence not needing to buy your own). We were able to pick oranges, lettuce, parsley, papaya, and more. We were even given a frozen block of real coconut water to use during the week. Amazing. And the bananas…they were sweet and perfect, just the best. What made the stay special was Claudia and Kevin’s aloha spirit.

We travel a lot round the world but we never had a better villa, fully maintained, absolutly calm in a beautiful surrounding. We picked all the fruits and vegetables in the garden we need. The hosts are the most friendly and helpful people we ever had. We'll come back! Klaus

“Stellar Vacation Property!”

Reviewed 4 Aug 2015

This is absolutely the best vacation home we have rented. It is situated on the North Shore of Maui. It is withing minutes of beautiful beaches, quaint towns, and wonderful local restaurants....including the five star Mamma's Fish House. There are wonderful outdoor activities one can do, or in our case, enjoy the beauty of the vacation home. Now, about the property: It is a large, luxurious home, in pristine condition. The furnishings are beautiful. The beds are comfy and sleep six. There are decks on the front and back of the house, each with beautiful views. There are also small decks on two of the bedrooms. It is apparent that the owner Claudia has put a great deal of effort in making this place beautiful, comfortable and enjoyable for her guests. She is wonderful to work with, and responds to inquiries in a timely manner. We are repeat clients, and while booking our 2016 visit to the home, I discovered that I had not written a review for the Sept. 2014 trip. It is well deserved, and long overdue. There are many different types of fruit trees on the grounds, as well as an organic vegetable garden. Whatever is in season is there for you to enjoy. There is a wonderful salt water pool, which we use daily when we are there. We love the night swims, as the sky is very dark and the stars are brilliant! There is so much more that I could say about this house. Read all the reviews on VRBO, or Home Away....they are spot on. We highly recommend this property!

“Once in a lifetime experience!”

Reviewed 22 May 2014

This is a real Hawaiian vacation experience, with quiet, lush acreage and a beautiful home. The north shore with its constant breeze and low humidity make for perfect play and sleeping conditions. The proprietress, Claudia Ledesma, is as kind and gracious as can be and let's you pick fruit from the trees on the property and herbs from her own garden. The house is best described as a "dream house", and the online photos barely do it justice. Our whole family (5 adults) spent one week at the Hale Mauka Makai house, and wish we could have stayed longer...again it was a once in a lifetime experience. If you want 5 star accommodations and beauty in a less touristy part of Hawaii this is the place to be!

“Total Paradise”

Reviewed 9 May 2014

My husband and I had the great fortune of spending our honeymoon at Hale Mauka Makai. For one week, we lived in total luxury. The house itself is beautiful, functional and extremely comfortable. You can tell that each detail was well thought out when the house was being built. You can spend time inside and still feel as if you are in paradise, as from every room in the house, all you have to do is look out the windows or doors and you have a view to die for. We had fresh squeezed orange juice every morning from oranges that were picked on the property. There were mangos and limes and mandarin oranges and vegetables and herbs to pick from the garden. And did I mention the coconuts? My husband is now a huge coconut water drinker, thanks to our Hawaiian vacation. We have rented homes before on vacation and normally by about the second day we are itching for our own bed and pillows. Not here. The bed and pillows were perfect. The pool was beautiful and so pristine, exactly as pictured. My husband loved the barbecue, and we wished we had used it more often during our stay. Claudia and Kevin and their daughter were so warm and welcoming. Honestly, when you stand outside this home, you almost have to pinch yourself that places like this exist. The acres that surround the home are perfectly landscaped; the colors are amazing. This house and surrounding property belong in a magazine! It was the perfect place to come to for vacation and my husband and I are looking forward to going back and bringing our children, who will love it as much as we did.

“We found PARADISE at Hale Mauka Makai!!”

Reviewed 24 Sep 2013

We love Hale Mauka Makai!! We were searching all over Hawaii for the perfect place, a pool, a view, land, privacy and all the amenities that make a vacation easy and memorable. Claudia was beyond knowledgable, friendly and professional. She couldn't have been better or more helpful in any way. The house is a dream. The location is perfection. Easily accessible to the town, the best beaches on the island and top notch local restaurants just down the street. I miss it all so much! The long driveway is flanked by palm trees and surrounded by organic vegetable, fruit and herb gardens and leads to the private house on a large plot of grassy land. Inside the beautifully decorated and perfectly laid out house you really feel all the stresses of life melt away. The kitchen is perfect. We cooked a lot and BBQ'ed outside on the deck overlong the gorgeous land and ocean. The breeze in the house was divine. The beds were like clouds! We even had an A/C delivered that Claudia handled so kindly and she also arranged for pick up as we never needed it once. Our mainland friends told us we would need one in the middle of August, but on the north shore, the trade winds are always blowing so no worries ever! The weather was blissful. The pool is a dream. Morning and night swimming were daily rituals along with picking guavas from the trees in the yard. There wasn't one thing I would change about our stay here. Everything was taken care of and we cannot wait to go back!! So happy we discovered this gem!

“We found Paradise!”

Hale Mauka Makai was everything my family and I hoped it would be and more. My husband, two daughters (ages 9 and 12) and I are from Rhode Island and have never been off the East Coast. We were very excited to be spending 10 days in Maui! It has always been our dream vacation and Hale Mauka Makai lived up to every expectation we had (and then some!). Claudia and Kevin were the perfect hosts. They gave us a detailed tour of the house and the grounds so that we were completely comfortable with everything that the property had to offer us. After the tour we did not see them for the rest of our time there...they understood that we would want our privacy during our stay in this amazing home. The house was pristine and beautifully decorated. The pool was AMAZING!!! We made time to swim and lounge by the pool every single day that we were there (sometimes during the day to soak up the sun and other times at night swimming under the stars). 5 stars doesn't seem like enough when rating Hale Mauka Makai... It is perfection and I can't think of one thing I would have changed about it.

“Amazing House”

Reviewed 11 Jun 2013

We stayed at Hale Mauka Makai May 28-June 7 in 2013. This house in Haiku on Maui is a wonderful vacation property and the owner, Claudia, is a pleasure to know. First, to echo some other reviews, it's really odd that the pictures on the site do not do the property justice. It's better in person and everything Claudia writes about the property is understated. It is hard to describe just how relaxing this house when the windows are open and the trades are flowing through the home. It is possible to hear neighbors and traffic, but you most likely will not. A few notes: the kitchen is well maintained. You will have everything you need to cook (or grill) and make dinner. We made most of our meals while there, and alternated between eating on the lanai or inside in the dining room. Claudia is very proud about her espresso/cappuccino set up and a great way to start your day. The kids spent hours in the pool. There is a chest of pool toys that were well used by all of us, and there are plenty of beach towels. Haiku, of course, is about as far away from the resorts at Kaanapali and Kapalua as one can get and still by on the same island. This location is for people that want to get out and do things, then come 'home' for the evening. It was perfect for us. On activities, Claudia referred us to Hawaiian Paddle Sports for a few of our outings. The owner, Tim, coaches outrigger teams and coached Claudia who is a steersman on a club team. We kayaked, paddled and surfed with Tim's company (Tim for outrigger paddling and Patrick for kayaking and surfing). These were excellent outings and thank you Claudia for pointing us in the right direction. We did go out for pizza in Haiku at Colleen's, which is a nice local spot and Paia is only a few minutes away. We ate at Mama's Fish House on our last day and ate at the Paia Fish Market and several other places for lunch. We did most of our food shopping at Costco, which is also fairly close in Kahului. The beaches at Hookipa and Paia are close and great beaches. To sum up, we couldn't have been happier with Hale Mauka Makai. It was better than expected (and we expected a lot) and Claudia made us welcome. We will be coming back.

Owner Supplied Testimonials

"My partner and I have rented Claudia's Hale Mauka Makai on Maui for at least the past four years, usually beginning the middle of December for four to six weeks. We often extend our stay if it is available. We first rented the home after viewing it on the internet and we were not disappointed when we arrived. Their are many homes to rent on the island, but Claudia's house has a warm Hawaiian plantation feel. The design of the home is quite unique and the quality of the workmanship and the furnishings throughout the house are extraordinary, and reflect Claudia's loving care.

We particularly appreciate the privacy of the home due to the beautifully landscaped grounds surrounding it as well as our ability to walk outside our door to pick papayas, star fruit, bananas, lemons, limes, and much more. The pool area is also very private and affords a full days sun. Honestly, we seldom go to the beach because we enjoy the privacy we have in sunbathing and swimming in the pool. It also has a panoramic view of Haleakala Volcano where we have gone hiking on numerous occasions. The kitchen is well equipped and we have held dinner parties during our stay.

The home is located just a short distance from popular beaches and island restaurants such as Mama's Fish House and Haliimaile General Store. The casual laid back town of Paia offers wonderful shops, restaurants, one of the best health food stores we have ever shopped, and a gallery of local artists. Haiku and Makawao are close by and the Maui Gym and Maui Studio in Haiku offer a tremendous variety of exercise and dance classes as well as special events and workshops.

Kevin and Claudia are also very accommodating to whatever our needs throughout our stay and keep us well informed about what's happening on the island---especially when "Jaws" 50 feet waves are about to hit so that we can make the drive through the pineapple fields to view it first hand.

There is something for everyone on Maui and each year we experience it as if it were our first time. We are anxiously looking forward to our return to Hale Mauka Makai next month and always feel as though we are visiting our second family when we think of Claudia, Kevin and Nohealani. I couldn't recommend a better vacation home on Maui.

I trust you will have a very memorable island experience with Hale Mauka Makai!"

"Our stay at this home was everything a vacationer dreams for. We arrived at the house late one evening after a very long day of travel. The owners had put the lights on for us, making it very warm and inviting. We walked in, smiled, and immediately let go of the travel stress. After meeting Kevin and Claudia the next day we knew why the house felt that way - it is a reflection of their warm and welcoming personalities. The house is spacious, comfortable and well appointed. We wanted for nothing. We would highly recommend this home to anyway who wants to experience Maui away from the crowds, yet still be close to all the beauty the island has to share. It is close to wonderful beaches, many restaurants, and is a couple of miles away from the Road to Hana (a must see). We have to divulge that after staying in this home we decided to move to Maui!!"

"Aloha Visitors! My review can not be just a one liner. I must say from the time I did my research on the internet to find Hale Mauka Makai, my experience will always be remembered. Claudia and Kevin (the owners) are such personable people and would welcome anyone into their beautiful home. My 2 week visit in Hawaii staying at Hale Mauka Makai was unbelievable!! Claudia and Kevin Ledesma's hospitality was remarkable. They made me feel right at home the entire time I was there (like I was part of their family). Their property/house is literately the BEST place to stay on Maui. The property is surrounded by 4.3 private acres. On the one side of the property there is the view of the Haelakala volcano and then on the other side you have the view of the beautiful Hawaiian land and the ocean with views to die for! From the moment you drive into Hale Mauka Makai one is greeted with beautiful palm trees on either side of the driveway. The property has been beautifully landscaped with different tropical flowers and fruit trees that are waiting to be picked to make homemade orange juice. What a morning treat to have fresh orange juice to start your day!! Mmmm...delicious!!! If that's not enough to digest, wait till you get into the house!! It's been beautifully decorated, very spacious and airy. On the one side of the house is a deck off the kitchen and living room for those days when one wants to have a romantic dinner. On the other side of the house it has a very inviting pool for those play days. Hale Mauka Makai definitely offers visitors a romantic yet adventurous place. Hope all who come, enjoy it as much as I did!!! ? Thank You Claudia and Kevin!!"

"Bob and I have stayed at Hale Maka Makai four times and it is our favorite on Maui. The privacy the property offers is wonderful as it is on 3+ acres with a pool to cool off in day or night. It is delightfully furnished with two decks--one to watch the sunrise and one the sunset with a view of Haleakela. If you like a place out of the hubbub, this a the property for you, but close to wherever you want to go. Mama's Fish House right down the road and you can walk to the village of Haiku for breakfast or dinner. Our favorite place on our vacation list!"

"Our week here was better than we ever could have imagined. Thank you for such a wonderful place to stay. There rare so many beautiful places on the island, but many times we were just thinking of getting back to our gorgeous house and relaxing. The kitchen is so great- we only went out for dinner twice! It was so wonderful to pick our own fruit and we found the beautiful plants and flowers at the house to be more beautiful and well cared for than some of the gardens we visited elsewhere on Maui. We loved everything, and it was the perfect paradise to spend our honeymoon at. What a blessing to find your amazing home!
Zac & Kate Hanson

"A week at Hale Mauka Makai was as relaxing as 2 weeks at the best Spa Resort in the world! Bob and I never left the north shore and spent as much time here at home as possible. We so enjoyed the well stocked kitchen, as we love to cook when we have the time. Thanks for creating such a remarkable slice of heaven for us to enjoy. We are puddles and we'll be back soon!
Bob and Linda

"We have been thrilled to be able to spend our vacation in this fabulous home. The experience has been almost indescribable! Within the shortest time, we were completely at home here. Indeed, while on excursions to Lahaina, or Hana, or Haleakala, we would all talk about what we would do when we returned "home". Meaning to this house. The amenities, such as the sound system, the Jacuzzi and others, have helped make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Thank you for the care and effort you put in to making this place the "LUXURY CAPITAL OF MAUI".
Randy, Micki, Parker & Briana Downey

"Every now and then we all find peace and happiness. Trying to find it, however, is not so easy sometimes. Hale Mauka Makai is a sure bet!
Your home is both beautiful in location and beautiful in design. It is decorated to perfection for the ultimate in the Maui experience. You can bet we will take this gem back to our friends and family! It was also wonderful to meet you both; you are true "Aloha" hosts."
Mahalo! Chris, Mary & Aiden

"Thank you for creating this sanctuary and sharing it with us. Our sons agreed this was the best vacation place. The noise they made out at the pool could attest to that! We found ourselves referring to this as home and truly felt like we'd come home when returning from our many excursions. You've done such lovely things with this home, a true inspiration!"
