Area Information
Hana is a restful, former sugar plantation town located in East Maui and favored by travelers (and celebrities) who seek to relax and enjoy Maui away from the flood of tourism. Hamoa Beach (with a view of the Big Island on a clear day) is located 5 miles from the house and provides good surfing and swimming. Sunset Magazine in July 2008 named Hamoa Beach as the #1 secret beach and Dr. Beach in 2014 r rated Hamoa Beach #5. The Hana House is located 30 minutes from Oheo Gulch and its many pools, five minutes from the black sand beach at Waianapanapa, 10 minutes from Red Sand Beach and 10 minutes from Travaasa Hana Hotel (formerly the Hotel Hana Maui). For those fortunate to visit Hana, Mark Twain's words written in 1866, in a private letter to his sister-in-law, remain equally true today: "I have got back from a sea voyage from the beautiful Island of Maui. I have spent five weeks there riding backwards and forwards among the sugar plantations. I have not written a single line and have not once thought of business, or are or human toil or trouble or sorrow or weariness. Few such months come in a life time. I went to Maui for a week and stayed five."

Mark Twain never returned to Hawaii after his first visit in 1866. However, Maui continues to offer a speical place and and Hana represents the best of "Old Hawaii."
