Fabulous vacation home
October 27, 2015
What a wonderful place to rest, relax and recharge. The home has every conceivable amenity one could want. What a thrill to sit on the back porch and watch 15 deer stroll through the national forest less than 100 feet away. Amazing. Rachel & Jim

Amazing as always!
August 6, 2015
This is our 3rd stay here. It was amazing as always! In fact, it wasn't 2 days after we got back home that my kids were begging me to take them back! The highlight of this trip was my oldest being so excited that she saw an elk early one morning before everyone else got up. She was smiling from ear to ear knowing she had experienced something special! Thanks as always for the great stay! Can't wait to come back!

Wonderful Solitude in the Pines
July 28, 2015
This was our first time at Elk in the Pines. Our stay was for sixteen nights and they went by so fast I couldn't believe it when we had to leave. The home is so fully equipped with everything you could need, including a large variety of grilling spices, vinegar, cooking oil, even flour. All you need to bring is your personal food. We drove to Flagstaff one day, but the next time, we will hang our the entire time in the area. Just plan well for your food. The wildlife was fun. We did see one mother Elk and her baby in the distance from the kitchen table. Wish we had had our binoculars! One deer just outside the fence, lots of cows, and one coyote. The owners even provided bird and squirrel feed so you could watch the critters from the porch or the kitchen windows. David was incredible with his response time, within minutes if you texted him. The trails were extensive and the access key to the forest also had a compass on it. Our dog loved running and exploring. You could just feel any tension just melting away while on the porch. Being from the dessert in July it was a wonderful reprieve from the heat. Even had a few thunder storms. Loved every minutes and will be back.

My husband, father, and I stayed here for the weekend and we really wished we had more time to enjoy the place! We didn't see any wildlife this time, but maybe next time! This was our first visit and we were extremely pleased with the house. To call it a cabin is doing it a disservice, this place is huge! I've paid more for much less at a hotel, but even setting that aside, it's the small things that really make this place great. Hiking trail maps, star charts, even videos and wooden "cops and robbers" toys for your kids to enjoy! I can't wait for us to be able to go back and enjoy the other things to do there, cook on the grill, and look for the elk and birds that are frequently sighted there by other visitors.
Great short stay!

Had a great short getaway with several family members. Top of the line appliances and super comfy beds. This house is nicer than mine! Watched elk off the back deck and played games all evening in front of the fireplace. Top Block!

The Elk in the Pines retreat is a vacation home away from home. From the moment you walk in, you feel invited and comfortable. Except for food, everything you would need is supplied for you. We were able to take short drives down the highway to visit Blue Ridge Reservoir and East Clear Creek, which were both beautiful places to visit. After a day of hiking and adventuring, the back deck of the cabin was a great place to relax and watch the birds and squirrels. I wish we could have stayed longer! We, including our dogs, were all sad to leave.

David and Mary, We enjoyed our 3rd time at your great cabin. Everything was perfect and we appreciate the quick response to any questions we had. We explored the area and went on some really great hikes and then came back to the cabin to relax. It was just the best to sit in the living room and enjoy nature's beauty right out your window. We saw so many beautiful birds, a few squirrels and about 9 deer come right up to the forest backyard. Thank you for being dog friendly as we couldn't think of going on vacation without out dogs! They love running around on the porch, while we sat and just enjoyed the view. Its such a beautiful relaxing spot and we will be back again.

Al we can say is WOW! what a beautiful and comfortable place!. The house has such great functionality and the attention to detail that the hosts have for their guest makes your stay really enjoyable. Beds are comfortable, everything works and is perfectly explained. The cabin backs to the forest, sitting in the back porch provides an extremely quiet experience. Great communication throughout the process, we will love to come back again!

Our family had a great stay. The house was wonderful and so were the owners. We will definitely go back!

Another Great Stay
October 14, 2014
We have been staying at Elk In The Pines for many years. The home is always inviting, clean, and well equipped. We love the abundance of natural light from the wall to wall windows and skylights. The back deck offers and amazing view of the forest and is one the best parts of the property. We always spend hours on the deck together as a family. On our last visit we saw squirrels, chipmunks, deer, wild turkey, and of course a variety of bird species. We also heard an Owl, and although we didn't see Elk, we did see Elk tracks, and fresh Elk scat on our hikes in the forest. We often visit Elk In The Pines with our kids and their grandparents, and the trails that start at the rear gate are easy enough for all ages to enjoy a hike in the forest. We have made memories at Elk In The Pines that will last a life time, and we look forward to making many more. Chris and Jennifer

Great Place to Relax
October 14, 2014
We used David and Mary's house during our successful elk hunt and we were extremely happy with our stay. This extremely comfortable house has all the amenities that made our stay wonderful. At the end of a tiring day it was great to come home and watch a ball game on tv and use the internet to catch up on the news. Highly recommend.
Couldn't ask for anything more
September 25, 2014
This home is beautiful, comfortable, fully equipped with very nice furnishings, the beds are super comfortable, the back covered deck is huge with lots of furniture, the gas grill is top of the line, it's a very nice area away from the road and you don't hear much traffic. You really couldn't ask for anything more in a rental. We've seen so many different animals from the chipmunks and squirrels to wild turkeys, deer, coyotes, rabbits, and all kinds of beautifully colored birds. The owners supply feed for the chipmunks and squirrels, and they kept us entertained every day. The area is very quiet and the homes on both sides aren't visible from the back deck. The residents in those homes don't seem to live there full time as we've stayed there 5 times and have only seen them once. We had lots of cloud cover in the afternoons and light showers practically every other day. We wanted to be out of the sun and heat so it was perfect for us. We truly enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and all of the amenities the house offers. The owners are wonderful people who are fantastic to deal with. This rental is a real find and we feel blessed to be able to stay in it.
WONDERFUL IN ALL WAYS
July 15, 2014
We had such a terrific weekend at this lovely property! Can't say enough positive things about it. We actually had a young elk visit us. He still had the velvet on his antlers, but I took several wonderful photos of him looking straight at me. What a beautiful animal! Hummingbirds, little ground squirrels and other wildlife visited as well. Just a perfect weekend. We will be back.
Peace & Quiet
July 10, 2014
This is the third home we've rented up north and it's probably the best one so far. The owners clearly know what they're doing. Seeing as the closest place to get any supplies is 15 miles away in Clint's Well, it's important for this home to be well-stocked and it is. Drawers, lights, etc. are also labeled, which was helpful so you don't have to think too much! Ha, ha! The home is nicely decorated and spotless. The back porch was my favorite spot - beautiful! Although the cabin is located in a neighborhood, it doesn't feel that way. The home is set back away from the surrounding homes and street and it backs right to the forest. I think we saw a total of 8 people the entire time and those were people out in the forest on quads and a family walking through a path that goes through the neighborhood that we saw on a walk through the neighborhood. It was very quiet and peaceful, which is exactly what we were looking for.

Great cabin backed up to the forest. Lots of wildlife, birds, squirrels, etc. Cabin was extremely clean and well kept. Would recommend to anyone wanting to relax and get away. Going to try and visit again next year.
Did NOT want to leave! LOVE IT!
May 31, 2014
My boyfriend and I work retail and by the end of the week are pretty strung up and stressed from the public...we were due for a vacation! We drove up north at night missing the beautiful view, but as soon as we pulled up the street and saw the welcoming lights circling the drive all our worries seemed to drift away. The weather is beautiful, and there are a million stars in the sky with a pleasant breeze. The house is super clean and incredibly inviting, we felt almost giddy upon opening the door, as it so is welcoming and warm. Not to mention the bed might be the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in, trumping our own. I relaxed while drinking coffee on the couch in the morning while overlooking a beautiful backyard view while listening to a great music station on the plasma TV. We enjoyed fishing Blue Ridge Reservoir during the day and BBQ'ing our catch at night on the grill outside with a cold beer! My boyfriend even grabbed a afternoon snooze on the deck while I quietly checked my email on the cozy couch. This place has all the amenities of a 5 star hotel but still has the country serene feel. We finished our stay with a hike in the woods, be careful out there...you could be easily lost!!! The forest is huge behind the house!! We literally had to be peeled away on the day of departure, and I so look forward to coming back. We left around 5pm which gave us the most beautiful sunset drive back down the Mongolian Rim, I highly recommend this special place and can't wait to bring my family back here! Thank you Elk in the Pines, you made our time incredibly memorable and fun!!! Lauren and Mike xxx

Every year our extended family stays in a cabin for a week of restful vacation. This is the second time we have stayed in Elk in the Pines Retreat. Even though it is beautifully decorated it is very kid and pet friendly. The kitchen is stocked with every utensil you could possibly need. The laundry room is perfect and the bathrooms very comfortable and nice. The back porch is phenomonal and very dog friendly. The forest behind the cabin is great for hiking or building a "fort" in the trees. The bedrooms are very nicely decorated and comfortable. Touristing information was provided and, even though we are lifelong Arizonans, we saw sights we did not know existed. We had another wonderful week and will be staying at the Elk in the Pines Retreat again. Thank you again, David and Mary, for the use of your lovely cabin.

What a wonderful time in Happy Jack, Arizona! The cabin- home was beautifully decorated for Christmas and we had everything we needed at our fingertips. We had a relaxing time filled with laughter, wine, games, and lots of food! A great escape from the big city. Precious time spent with good friends. We would certainly rent this lovely place again!
BEAUTIFUL HOME/AWESOME VACATION
September 18, 2013
We had a perfect vacation at Elk In The Pines Retreat. This home is beautifully furnished and very clean. The back porch is phenomenal; you are literally feet from the national forest! Really appreciate that you allowed our canine family members to stay at your home. They had a blast!! It was just the most relaxing vacation. We went hiking in the forest every day and walked around the subdivision, which was very quiet. The area is absolutely beautiful. We are already planning our next visit. Thanks so much, David and Mary, for sharing your home with us.

Nice 2-day Getaway
September 9, 2013
My wife and I took our two labs for a 2-day retreat from the heat and we have nothing but positive remarks about our stay. First, it was only a 2.5 hour drive from our home in Glendale and the beauty of the mountains and pines on the way up was awsome. The cabin was spacious, very clean and offered all the amenities you would expect. We enjoyed our hikes with the dogs during the day and relaxed on the spacious balcony enjoying the peace and quiet and bright stars in the evening. We were a little disappointed that we didn't see any wildlife. I highly recommend this rental cabin.

Just ended our 10 day stay at Elk in the Pines and it was just as perfect as our stay was a year ago. As all of the reviews state below this home couldn't be more welcoming, more comfortable or more enjoyable. It truly was a wonderful vacation. We biked , hiked, photographed, played in Clear Creek and fished at Knoll Lake. And my favorite...relaxed on the most wonderful deck ever! Hope to make it three years in a row! Thanks for thinking of everything to make our stay perfect.

We'll Be Back
June 14, 2013
We've never enjoyed a more gloriously relaxing, fun experience only 2 hours from home. The ELK in the Pines is awesome, from it's location to it's comfortable interior appointments. We tried to think of something we needed that was not available for our use and could not. We thoroughly enjoyed the back deck from where we could sit back and enjoy nature. Even though we did not see any wildlife, it was beautifully picturesque. Our travels to Happy Jack that weekend was for business so we only enjoyed the Elk in the Pines a few days but both my husband and I agree had we known how very awesome the Elk in the Pines is we would have stayed longer. Our Thanks to David and Mary for sharing their property.

The perfect place to get away!
February 23, 2013
My husband and I work hard and when we do find the time to get away I do a lot of research for that perfect place. All I can say is KUDOS to David and Mary! This home is beautiful! Every need or want has been thought of in advance to make ones stay comfortable and relaxing. The snow was amazing to watch through the homes wall of windows in the living room as we curled up on the very large couch and drank hot totties. We had a visit from a bull elk and 3 of his females plus a large arrangement of birds from red crested woodpeckers to blue birds and blue jays. It is a photographers dream! We are looking forward to returning to this place in the summer and knowing we will not be disappointed! Thanks again David and Mary for opening your home to us and others!
A wonderful trip!!
January 9, 2013
My family was looking for a quick get away before our kids returned to school. We wanted a place we could relax and play in the snow, cook some great meals and watch the scenery. Elk in The Pines was PERFECT. There was plenty of room for the 4 kids and 4 adults plus our very well behaved dogs. We have stayed in cabins before, but this one was fully stocked with all the extras to make your stay easy. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook and even had some condiments that we forgot. There were electric blankets on every bed and enough blankets and pillows to make sure everyone was warm!! There were sleds for the kids and we wore them out everyday with long walks in the snow. The gas fireplace was nice with no worries about getting wood or smoke in the house. There was plenty of room for dining as we put the kids on the kitchen island and we could eat together as adults!! The owners were just an email or phone call away if we had any questions or concerns. We will be back in the Summer to enjoy another season here!!

I would give this cabin a 6 star if I could. We went for the second time and we had a blast again, this time a lot of snow, a White Christmas. I cannot describe the warm feeling you get as soon as you enter the door, the interior decorations are just breathless, such a welcoming atmosphere. Everything you need and more you can find here, all you need to bring is just the food . I really can't think of something that I forgot to take with us on the few days trip away from home, that David and Mary did not have in the cabin. Well, well stocked with everything you need. Cannot wait to go back, now we wanna experience it in the summer, after all the notes left by people that stayed in the summer, I'm sure we will have a great time again. Thank you David and Mary for sharing your wonderfull cabin with us, there's nowhere else I would go for a retreat vacation now, that I've been living at your cabin . Indeed , a home away from home.

Five Stars From The Five Of Us
September 24, 2012
The cabin was great and a perfect base for our trips into the forest, including an 85 mile round trip ATV adventure in the rain. It was good to come "Home" to this great cabin and a hot shower after that trip. The owners have supplied the cabin with everything you need to enjoy your stay in the Arizona White Mountains. The entry gate into the forest just yards away from the back porch is super to take a morning or evening walk with your dog. We plan to rent it again, which is the best recommendation I can give.
Best vacation ever!

Everything was just perfect. The cabin was beautiful and very relaxing. We would rent it again. Lots of nature and very cool weather.
June 8, 2012
The Tranquility of the cabin was just what we needed from the hustle your bustle of work. The mountain air was invigorating and a welcome retrieve from the dirty air of the valley. If you’re looking for an extremely quite retreat to relax, than this is the place for you.
Absolutely the Best
May 29, 2012
We had the best time ever! The pictures and glowing reviews on the website do not do the place justice! We went hiking and explored around the area and it is just beautiful. Our favorite was the beautiful deck out back. We felt like we had this little slice of heaven all to ourselves. We plan to come back again very soon and bring the entire family this time. Thank you for everything David and Mary!!!!
The best cabin/home we have rented!
May 7, 2012
What a wonderful surprise to walk into this delightful home. Clean and well decorated it felt like home. As avid hikers it was also great to have the national forest at our doorstep, it allowed us to get in a quick hike on our first day without the added time of driving somewhere. The area is so quiet and the back deck with its privacy is a dream. We had hoped to see some elk or deer especially upon see many piles of droppings on the property but it was not to be. Maybe next time.
April 23, 2012
We loved, loved, loved the cabin! Joined other family members in the area for a long weekend and couldn't get over the spacious, beautiful cabin! It has everything you can think of, is very well maintained and is extremely clean! Can't wait to go back again this summer to explore that area of the Rim. Thanks David and Mary!

My family (3 generations) just returned from Elk in the Pines Retreat. The property is lovely and VERY comfortable. This was our first experience at renting a home and we could not have been more impressed. The setting is secluded and peaceful. We were lucky enough to be there during a snow storm which was totally unexpected when we booked the property. It was a beautiful winter wonderland. David and Mary were great to deal with, keeping in touch to make sure everything was going smoothly. David even arranged for a snow plow to get us out on time! The drive from the east valley was much shorter and more beautiful then anticipated. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a trip to the white mountains.
Glad that everyone had the experience of being there during a snow storm and enjoying the beautiful day after. Just so there's no confusion, we aren't in the white mountains but 45 miles north of Payson off of Hwy 87 on top of the Rim at 7000' in the Blue Ridge/Happy Jack area right on the Coconino National Forest.
Hope to go again.

We next had a great time and can,t wait to go again next winter. We took our grandkids to pay in the snow. It had snowed 2ft. the weedend before, but most of the snow had melted by the time we got there. we waited all weekend for new snow. The weather channel was calling for a winter strom warning. I was a little nervous about getting snowed in but after got to this great home we found out they had a emergency generater. I felt truly comfortable. This home was truely a joy to stay in. By the way we woke up sunday morning to 6 inches of fresh snow so the kids got to sled and play. thanks to the owners for sharing thier home with others. The Parsons

We had a great time. Everything you need you have ample amounts. Anything you think you might need, well you have ample amounts of that too. Beautiful, relaxing, and fun place to be.
November 10, 2010
My family and friends stayed at Elk in the Pines for a weekend. The cabin is not only breath-taking, but the amenities are vast. We weren't in need of anything. It was such a relaxing weekend...spending it in comfort with family, friends, and nature. Four small children traveled with us, with no difficulty. The toddlers were able to be enclosed on the spacious patio while we enjoyed the view of the forest. The infants had plenty of room for pack 'n' plays and floor toys. Even our pets had a great time. Our only wish was that the weekend didn't end. If you're looking for a great weekend, go to Elk in the Pines. The owners were very gracious.

We rented the cabin for Mother's Day and had such a wonderful time. The kids got a kick out of the squirrels in the yard and the elk came right up to the cabin! We enjoyed riding our quads on all the trails. The house was beautiful and very comfortable. We will be back!
Perfect Get Away
March 22, 2010
I rented the cabin for two nights to get away with my children over spring break. The pictures don't do justice to the beauty and comfort we found there. We spent hours just exploring and enjoy the forest around the cabin. In fact, we only ventured out to explore surrounding areas only once. The home is completely stocked with everything you may need so no worries if you forget something small, chances are pretty good you'll find it there. The back porch was my favorite place to be. You can sit there and literally feel your worries melt away. Snuggling up with a blanket at night and looking at the stars was breath taking. Thank you so much for allowing me and my children to share your home. We would love to return and visit this beautiful getaway again in the near future. We will absolutely recommend The Elk In the Pines to friends and family. Thank you again. Kristie and family.

What a nice pleasnat stay we had. With the national forest right behind the property it was so easy to go for an early morning and late evening walk. The 3 bedroom cabin/house is beautifully decorated and has everything one could possibly want. We enjoyed grilling on the back porch watching the birds & other wildlife. Our standard poodle was in heaven. We have stayed at over 20 cabins in the last year and would rate this one if not the best we have seen. It really was a place I didn't want to leave and if ever I bought a mountain home this one would be perfect. Plenty of nearby recreation...clear creek being in a nice canyon was our favorite. Lakes and fishing close with miles and miles of trails right off your back porch. Highly recomended!!!!!

What an amazing stay we had! Only there 4 days, but it felt like 2 weeks. We didn't even leave the property, except to go for long walks in the forest. My son had fun feeding the birds and watching them throughout the stay! The dogs were in heaven unsuccessfully chasing the gray squirrels and herding the participating cattle! My husband and I felt incredibly relaxed and forgot to even drink our wine. "If you're lucky enough to be in the mountains, you're lucky enough" Many thanks to you.

We had a delightful, peaceful stay away from the city chaos. It was a wonderful time for my husband and me. We played games, shared the moments and sat in front of the fire place. It was a memory we will never forget. We want to go back...soon! The scenery from the back porch was incredible, and we slept like children on holiday!!! We saw wildlife we didn't know existed! We went back in time to a more peaceful time. It was a most wonderous experience. Go there. You will be so glad you did!

This was our third stay at Elk in the Pines and it was just as wonderful as the first and won't be our last. We don't want to go anywhere else for our vacation!! It's a great location number one and number two the cabin/home could not be more pleasant, clean, comfortable and leaves nothing to be desired. It is so welcoming and relaxing you'll never want to leave. I'd recommend you reserve early as the secret is out about Elk in the Pines! Until next time....

What a beautiful cabin!! We have two teenage boys, and this was a great getaway for our entire family! We love to off-road, as we have a Rhino, and two dirt bikes, and there's a gate right next to the cabin that goes right out to the National Forest. There were so many awesome trails to take...and at night, we sat out on the beautiful, long patio & enjoyed the weather, and saw an elk on our last night!! I'd HIGHLY recommend this amazing cabin, and look forward to staying again! Lastly, David was great to work with!!

Myke and I had a great time of rest and relaxation at your wonderful home. You two seemed to have thought of everything. We have stayed in other homes and have always seemed to need something that wasn't available, but not at Elk in the Pines! We so enjoyed using your wildlife and bird manuals to identify all the squirrels and birds we saw each day in your back yard--there were so many! We saw lots of ravens, western bluebirds, woodpeckers galore, grosbecks, orioles, a gorgeous Steller Blue Jay, finches, Arizona squirrels and one Abert Squirrel. On the last night we were there, we were sitting out enjoying the last bit of sunlight fade away and we saw a gorgeous elk pass by--his antlers were absolutely massive! What a gift from God to see him on our last evening there!
Relaxing Arizona High Country Home Dec 1, 2011
We took some family and friends to enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend and also help my husband with his hunt. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in this beautiful cabin adjoining the national forest. The home was stocked, and clearly marked, with everything we could imagine to make us all comfortable. We felt welcomed and relaxed immediately in this lovely home. As wildlife admirers, we truly enjoyed all the suggestions and information provided for viewing and identifying all the birds, squirrels, etc. that joined us daily in the back yard at the bird baths and feeding stations throughout the property. On our last day we even were blessed with the company for 4 female elk that fed on the hay we left for them to enjoy. We highly recommend this cabin to wildlife lovers and anyone wanting to escape the valley heat. We hope to visit Elk in the Pines again someday.

Review Submitted September 13, 2011 Date of Stay September 9, 2011 My family had a wonderful time staying at Elk In The Pines Retreat, the house is extremely well maintained and had all of he comforts of home and then some. My family was able to travel just a short jaunt from the home on our ATV's and were soon exploring many miles of forest roads. This is truly a place you'll want to try and I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. My family will surely go back for a longer vacation, hopefully in the very near future.
Every year our extended family rents a cabin in the mountains and we spend a week. This was by far the best cabin we have ever rented. Everything was included. The cabin is beautiful and very practical. Because of the tile we didn't have to worry about the kids or dogs tracking stuff on the carpets. The cabin is beautifully decorated and very family friendly. The hiking, fishing and porch sitting were great. We hope to come back next year for our vacation. Thank you so much David & Mary for helping make our vacation so memorable. The Bullington & Motley Families from Tucson and Chandler, AZ
Thanks again for allowing us to stay in your beautiful cabin. Week of July 2, 2011

We stayed at Elk in the Pines fom 6/16 to 6/23/11. We found the Cabin to be located in a beautiful setting that backs to the Coconino Forest. This affords easy access to many trails in the forest for hiking or ATV riding. By its location, the property provides those uncommon chances to see elk, deer, various species of birds, coyotes, etc. One of the finest features of where this cabin is located is the absolutely breathtaking views of the skies at night. The stars are particularly vivid here. The cabin has all the amenities for a comfortable stay and then some. I believe the owners have thought of every eventuality and every form of entertainment. Also, Mary and David (the owners), are helpful, gracious, and easy to reach with questions or problems. Another BIG plus with this rental is the fact that dogs are allowed and what's a vacation without one's furry sidekicks.

Our family had a wonderful time at Elk in the Pines. We enjoy the outdoors and especially the cool pines of northern AZ. God's creation is certainly mysterious, but so very beautiful and inviting. The house is beautifully decorated and complete with all the necessary items for cooking meals. We loved the ATV trails for hiking and riding our quads. I am sure that we will be back to visit. May God bless you and your family, The Dishons

Elk in the Pines is simply wonderful. We arrived at this lovely location and found that everything in the description and pictures were more than we expected. The house was clean and tidy. The area is peaceful and quiet. Prior to renting the property the owner answered all our questions. We felt completely at home in the relaxing atmosphere and had a marvelous time. We would highly recommend this home to any friend or relative. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. Our son expressed the desire to rent the home for a weeks vacation sometime in the future.

"We absolutely loved this cabin! It was VERY clean when we arrived and had everything we needed. We loved that the back patio is completely fenced in so our dogs could be outside with us without needing to be tied to something. We will definitely be visiting Elk in the Pines again!"
