About Kailua-Kona

If you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime Hawaiian vacation, you may want to consider Kailua Kona vacation rentals. This picturesque small town (often called just "Kona" by the locals) offers a temperate, balmy climate year-round, making trip-planning a breeze.

When you visit this island paradise, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the nearby Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea mountains, both of which reach 13,000 feet. The isolation of Kailua Kona, HI also makes for unparalleled views of the night sky, making this an ideal destination for romantics and amateur astronomers.

Like many destinations in Hawaii, this city has a very laid-back, friendly atmosphere, and you'll enjoy meeting the locals as much as you'll take pleasure in the island's many attractions and amenities. Kailua Kona, HI beach rentals include something for every budget and lifestyle, from small bungalows to sprawling villas on the water.

When you leave the comforts of your rental property, there are plenty of things to do on this large island. Tourist favorites include parasailing and snorkeling. What better way to spend your Hawaiian vacation than soaring above the crystal clear waters or taking a snorkel tour to Kealakekua Bay? You can even take a night swim with the manta rays. If you really have an adventurous streak, you might ask the locals about the island's exhilarating cliff-diving options. A helicopter tour is another great way to take in the sights and sounds if you're not afraid of heights. If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, plenty of scenic golf courses can be found up and down the coast as well.

The outdoor activities might take center stage on this Hawaiian island, but Kailua Kona also offers plenty of shopping, dining, and nightlife options. Charming local restaurants serve up mouthwatering Hawaiian and Thai food that will help fuel your island explorations, including the Big Island Grill and Kona Mix Plate. If you're looking for a souvenir by which to remember your trip, many shops and art galleries can be found within a short distance of many Kailua Kona vacation home rentals. Whether you're looking for beautiful hand-carved items or a shark-tooth necklace, you'll find something to satisfy your eye.

As you can see, finding things to do on your island vacation shouldn't be a problem. In fact, we're guessing that your only problem might be bringing yourself to say goodbye. If the amazing attractions and charming island culture doesn't sweep you off your feet, the comforts of the Kailua Kona vacation rentals are likely to seal the deal.

Kailua-Kona is in the North Kona District of the Island of Hawai’i, otherwise known as the Big Island. It is served by the Kona International Airport and is north of Kalaoa. King Kamehameha used to hold court here, and you can do the same with a Kailua-Kona condo rental.

Things to Do

Kailua-Kona, often called Kona, was a sleepy fishing village, and there are many activities visitors can do to remind them of this, including boat tours, scuba, snorkeling, dolphin and whale watching, and fishing charters. The major draw to this area is its extraordinary natural beauty.

Drive the Saddle Road, take a nature tour, explore the volcano, conquer the Mauna Kea summit, or enjoy the beauty of the crystal waters from one of the many breathtaking beaches. The Manini’owali Beach is a favorite and because of that draws a crowd. If you want something a little less crowded, Makalawena/Pu’u Ali’I offers a beautiful beach and far fewer people because it’s best accessed by a four-wheel-drive. To get to the beach, you’ll go over a lava field, but it's worth it. The Kona Brewing Company is also a lot of fun.

Transit

Taxis are very high-priced in Kona. Most people opt to rent cars when there. They are also a great way to explore the island and get away from the more congested places. Many of the cruises do not leave from harbors in town, so without a car, you’d need a way to get there another way. Public transportation is very limited on the Big Island.

Still, Kailua-Kona is very small, so if you had no intention of ever leaving your Kailua-Kona condo rental and the area in general, you could go without a car, but you would be missing the majesty of the rest of the island.

Climate

One of the many beauties of a Hawaiian island is the moderate temperatures and warm coastal breezes. Most of the year temps are in the high 70s and low 80s. Summers are in the high 80s. Kona has a tropical, semi-arid climate. February is the coolest month, where daily highs average in the mid-70s.

Events

Kailua is the beginning and end point for the annual Ironman World Championship Triathlon held every October. The town also plays host to the annual Kona Coffee Festival every November where they crown Miss Kona Coffee and celebrate Hawaii’s oldest food festival.

Shopping

Kona offers a lot of distinct shopping opportunities. There’s the Kona Farmers Market, featuring the freshest veggies and fruits from the area. You can even pick up a few souvenirs from the local artisans. The Keauhou Shopping Center may seem like your average strip mall, but it’s a great place for souvenirs and catching the sunset. The Kona Inn Shopping Village is the home to many art galleries and boutiques.

A Kailua-Kona condo rental gives you the perfect spot from which to explore the Big Island. There are options in all sizes and for all budgets, from oceanfront studios to luxury beachfront homes. Come relax and enjoy the island’s beauty.
