Area Information
Helen, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Chattahoochee River, is a re-creation of an alpine village complete with cobblestone alleys and old-world towers. This Northeast Georgia village has a rich history linked to the Cherokee Indians and Indian burial mounds as well as early settlers who arrived to mine for gold and cut virgin timber for a thriving lumber industry in the early 1900's.

Festivals and special events include a hot air balloon race, Winefest, Volksmarch, Oktoberfest and Christmas parades, Fourth of July fireworks, and Bavarian Nights of Summer. From mid-September through October, Helen hosts the longest Oktoberfest in the South. Alpenfest offers entertainment for visitors during the Holiday season from Thanksgiving through December. Visitors can hike the many trails to waterfalls in the area, or sit beside a cozy fire and enjoy the winter weather in the mountains.

The Garden Cottage was the perfect place to spend an anniversary. Cottage was very comfortable and had everything needed for a great weekend. The location was very central for hiking, kayaking, antique shopping, and waterfall treks. We will be back. Our thanks to the most gracious owners.

First the house is a lot bigger than it looks in the pictures really open which is great for socializing and you're not cramped together. Very clean & I know this sounds silly but smelled really fresh & clean. Nancy was great - we asked for a pot to boil peanuts in & she found us one. We didn't get to enjoy the river as much due to such a short visit but it is really pretty and you can hear the water rushing by from the porch. We spent our days at the Hiawassee Fair which was really cheap entertainment. It rained at night & the days were just cool enough to enjoy long sleeves. A really nice fire pit that we couldn't use (but we tried) everything was too wet from the rain. Hope to return for a longer visit next time. Yes, we did see trout though we didn't have time to fish. The dogs loved the big porch and the big back yard. Thanks Nancy for sharing your home with us. Hope to see you next year!!:)John & Pat, Garrett & Suzanne, Jarred & Lisa, & of course our dogs, Butch, Jenn, & Emma.

Lovely cottage on the river. Very relaxing, well kept, clean, nice owners. We went tubing, roasted marshmallows in the backyard fire pit. Great decks on both levels. We are a family of four with two teenagers. We relaxed, barbecued, and watched some of the movies provided in the cottage. Did not get cell phone service on the property, which was probably a good thing. We drove down the road a bit to get service. Overall very good trip. We would recommend it.

Peaceful, tranquil and beautiful. This is the place you can take a long nap on the porch and enjoy the sounds of nature. Or, if you want to go tubing, canoeing or fishing, it''s all there! The cottage is absolutely beautiful! This is the kind of place you dream about. We are looking forward to going back, and staying longer next time!( even saw a bear during there stay!, which is now named Marshmellow)

I have to say we absolutely loved this cabin, it was way beyond our expectations as the pictures just dont do it justice! (and we are VERY picky) The porches were awesome and huge with lots of comfortable sitting areas where we spent literally hours and hours hanging out in the fresh air and talking. My husband loved the fishing and we made a fire in the fire pit and made smores in the evenings after dinner! The beds are amazingly comfortable (which is rare for us to find) and we slept like babies after all that fresh mountain air! Helen was a hop-skip and a jump away, so we were surpised how peaceful and secluded the property was. Truly a pleasure and we can''t wait to go back for another trip! Thank you Nancy for your wonderful hospitatlity and your truly amazing cabin! -Cheryl, Scott, Stephanie and Kevin! Cheryl had written to me (Nancy) in an e-mail the following: We absolutely loved the was way beyond my expectations and it was immaculate! The porches were amazing and I loved all your decorator touches and the details and the seating on the porches! Truly a pleasant stay to say the least! I wished we had more time ....felt like we just got there and we had to leave!
